Chapter 9: The Last Call
The trial lasted three more days.
Three days of secrets.
Three days of people finally speaking.
The businesses Preston had pressured came forward.
Employees described threats.
Partners described manipulation.
People who had stayed silent for years finally stopped being afraid.
But Daniel noticed something.
Preston never apologized.
Not once.
After the hearing ended, Preston found Daniel outside.
“You think this changes everything?””
Daniel turned.
“Yes.””
Preston smiled.
“You’re wrong.””
He stepped closer.
“People like me survive.””
Daniel looked at him.
“People like you survive because everyone is afraid.””
Preston’s smile faded.
“And now?””
Daniel answered:
“Now they aren’t.””
That evening, Daniel returned home.
His business was recovering.
Customers were calling.
But something still bothered him.
Carter.
The boy who started everything.
Daniel found him outside a small park.
Carter sat alone.
“Mr. Baptiste?””
Daniel nodded.
“Can I sit?””
Carter moved over.
For a while, neither spoke.
Finally Carter said:
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I know.””
“No, I mean really sorry.””
The boy looked down.
“I thought being powerful meant nobody could tell you no.””
Daniel was quiet.
“Who taught you that?””
Carter didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Daniel understood.
“My dad.””
Carter nodded.
“I don’t want to be like him.””
Daniel looked at the boy.
“Then don’t.””
A week later, the court issued its decision.
Preston lost control of several businesses.
His reputation collapsed.
But the biggest surprise came after.
Claire requested one final meeting.
With Daniel.
She placed a small box on the table.
Inside was Daniel’s original chef hat.
Clean.
Restored.
“I thought it was gone,” Daniel said.
Claire smiled sadly.
“So did I.””
“How did you get it back?””
She looked toward the box.
“Carter.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“He asked for it.””
“Why?””
Claire answered:
“Because he wanted to return something he destroyed.””
Daniel touched the hat.
For the first time in months, he felt peace.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Baptiste?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Evelyn Laurent.””
Daniel froze.
Andre’s last name.
“I know who you are.””
The woman continued:
“I’m Andre’s sister.””
Daniel stood.
“Why are you calling me?””
May you like
A pause.
“Because Andre didn’t tell you everything.””
