Chapter 5: The Boy Who Finally Spoke

Carter sat alone at the kitchen table.

For the first time in days, nobody was protecting him.

His father was making calls.

His mother was avoiding him.

And the internet knew his name.

Claire placed a glass of water in front of him.

“Carter.””

He didn’t answer.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

“Why did you throw the food?””

His eyes filled.

“I don’t know.””

Claire sat down.

“Yes, you do.””

He swallowed.

“Dad said nobody could make us look bad.””

The room became silent.

“What does that mean?””

Carter stared at his hands.

“He said people like Daniel needed to know their place.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“And the hat?””

Carter whispered:

“Dad told me to take it.””

Her heart sank.

“What?””

“He said if I embarrassed him, he would understand.””

Claire felt something break inside her.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

She stood.

“Carter, we’re going to fix this.””

“How?””

She looked toward the window.

“By telling the truth.””

That afternoon, Carter recorded a statement.

Not a perfect one.

Not a heroic one.

Just an honest one.

“I threw the food,” he said.

“I was wrong.””

Then he looked down.

“My dad told me it was funny.””

The video went public.

And everything changed.

Businesses that had ignored Daniel called back.

Customers apologized.

The Whitmore name became the subject of conversations Preston couldn’t control.

But Daniel knew the story wasn’t finished.

Because that evening, Claire arrived at his office holding another folder.

“I found something else.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a contract.

A contract between Preston and several restaurant owners.

At the bottom was a signature.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Why is my name on this?””

Claire’s face turned pale.

“Because someone used your company to hide something.””

Daniel looked at the signature again.

Then he saw the date.

Three years earlier.

A year before he had even met Preston.

And underneath the forged signature was a note:

*Ask who trained Daniel’s former partner.*

Daniel looked up.

“Former partner?””

Claire nodded.

“There’s someone else involved.””

Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.

A voice he hadn’t heard in years came through.

“Daniel.””

He froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice answered quietly.

“The person who knows why Preston chose you.””

May you like

A pause.

“And the person who helped him do it.””
