Daniel spent two hours reading the documents.
Every page made his stomach tighten.
Invoices.
Fake complaints.
Private messages.
A pattern stretching back years.
“He does this often,” Daniel said.
Claire nodded.
“He finds people who won’t fight back.””
“And you?””
She looked at the floor.
“I didn’t fight back either.””
The honesty surprised him.
Outside, rain hit the windows.
New Orleans looked gray and unfamiliar.
Daniel closed the folder.
“Why help me now?””
Claire took a long breath.
“Because yesterday I watched my son become someone I don’t recognize.””
A knock interrupted them.
Both turned.
Tasha entered.
“Daniel.””
“What happened?””
She held up her phone.
“Your business page is exploding.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
She showed him.
The video from the party had spread.
Thousands of comments.
Most supporting him.
People had seen Carter throw the food.
They had seen Preston laugh.
They had seen Claire pick up the hat.
Then another notification appeared.
A news outlet wanted an interview.
Daniel stared.
“He can’t control this anymore.””
Claire shook her head.
“You don’t know Preston.””
Her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Preston.
She answered.
“What?””
His voice came through loudly enough for Daniel to hear.
“You’re done.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Preston—”
“You chose a stranger over your family.””
“No. I chose my son over your ego.””
Silence.
Then:
“You have no idea what you just started.””
The call ended.
Claire lowered the phone.
Daniel looked at her.
“What does he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
That night, Preston made his final move.
He released a statement accusing Daniel of “aggressive behavior toward a child.””

Some believed Daniel.
