Chapter 3: The Woman Who Picked Up the Hat
Claire Whitmore had spent eleven years protecting Carter from consequences.
Until she saw herself in him.
The morning after the party, she stood outside Carter’s bedroom door.
Inside, he was playing video games.
Laughing.
Like nothing happened.
She opened the door.
“Turn it off.””
Carter didn’t look away.
“Mom, I’m busy.””
“Turn it off.””
Something in her voice made him pause.
He grabbed the controller and placed it down.
“What?””
Claire sat on the edge of his bed.
“Do you know why I picked up that hat?””
Carter shrugged.
“Because you like him?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
She looked at her son.
“Because someone needed to pick it up.””
Carter frowned.
“I was joking.””
“Was Daniel laughing?””
“No.””
“Was Tasha laughing?””
“No.””
“Were you laughing?””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“That’s the problem.””
Later that evening, Preston came home furious.
“You sent the video.””
Claire stood in the kitchen.
“Yes.””
“Do you understand what you did?””
“Yes.””
“You embarrassed your own family.””
She looked at him.
“No. Carter embarrassed our family.””
Preston laughed.
“You think this is about manners?””
“It’s about who he becomes.””
Preston stepped closer.
“You’re overreacting.””
“No. I’ve been underreacting for eleven years.””
That sentence stopped him.
Because it was true.
She had ignored the warning signs.
The broken toys.
The cruel jokes.
The way Carter copied his father’s arrogance.
The way everyone became afraid to say no.
Preston lowered his voice.
“You’re my wife.””
Claire looked at him.
“I’m also his mother.””
That night, Claire searched through old files.
Bank records.
Business papers.
Documents Preston thought she never saw.
And then she found something strange.
A payment.
Made six months earlier.
To a company owned by someone named Daniel Baptiste.
Except Daniel had never worked with that company.
Claire printed the page.
Then she found more.
Different names.
Different businesses.
Same pattern.
Preston was not just threatening people.
He was setting them up.
The next morning, Claire drove to Daniel’s office.
He looked surprised when he opened the door.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
“I need to tell you something.””
Daniel stepped aside.
“What?””
Claire held out the documents.
“My husband didn’t just ruin your reputation.””
May you like
Daniel looked down.
“He planned it.””
