Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Trap

I didn’t speak.

Neither did Lena.

The coffee shop noise disappeared.

All I could hear was her breathing.

“You sent Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

I laughed quietly.

“You’re right.””

A pause.

Then:

“I know.””

That hurt more than anger.

Because she sounded like she expected it.

“Meet me.””

“Where?””

“Your office.””

“No.””

“Marcus.””

“I’m not walking into another room where someone controls the story.””

Another pause.

“Fair.””

Two hours later, Lena sat across from me in the restaurant.

No lawyers.

No cameras.

Just us.

“You deserve the whole truth.””

I looked at her.

“I do.””

She nodded.

“I never wanted control of the restaurant.””

“Then why does your name appear on the documents?””

“Because I was trying to expose the person who did.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“Daniel created the transfer documents. Vanessa helped him. But someone else gave him access.””

“Who?””

Lena looked at me.

“Your accountant.””

I frowned.

“My accountant?””

“Yes.””

“The same person who handled the payments?””

“Yes.””

Everything clicked.

The eight percent transfers.

The fake signatures.

The hidden companies.

Lena continued.

“I found the first irregularity months ago. I confronted Vanessa.””

“And she threatened you.””

“She warned me.””

“Same thing.””

“No.””

Lena looked down.

“She said if I exposed Daniel, she would release evidence showing I had accessed confidential files.””

“You did access confidential files.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“But not to steal.””

The distinction mattered.

“I broke rules to stop someone breaking bigger ones.””

I leaned back.

“That’s convenient.””

“I know.””

She looked exhausted.

“I know exactly how it sounds.””

Then she placed a folder on the table.

“Here.””

I opened it.

Inside were bank records.

The money trail.

Not to Daniel.

Not to Vanessa.

To the accountant.

Aaron arrived twenty minutes later.

He reviewed everything.

Then he said the words I needed to hear.

“This changes the case.””

The accountant’s name was Robert Hale.

He had worked with the company for seven years.

Trusted by everyone.

The person nobody questioned.

Because everyone assumed honesty looked like familiarity.

Aaron made the call.

Robert answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“We need to talk.””

“About what?””

“The transfer records.””

Silence.

Then:

“I wondered when you’d find them.””

Nobody in the room moved.

Aaron put the call on speaker.

“You admit knowledge?””

Robert laughed.

“Knowledge?””

A pause.

“I built the system.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because you were going to sell.””

“What?””

“You were planning to sell the restaurant group.””

I looked at Aaron.

That wasn’t true.

Or was it?

Robert continued.

“You were going to leave everyone behind.””

“No.””

“You told investors you wanted out.””

“I wanted expansion.””

“Same thing.””

The call became colder.

Robert wasn’t angry.

He was convinced.

He believed he was right.

“I protected the company.””

“You stole from it.””

“I redirected value.””

Aaron cut in.

“That’s fraud.””

Robert laughed.

“Only if you can prove it.””

The call ended.

We sat in silence.

Then Omar entered.

He looked terrified.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

He held up his phone.

“The security company found the original footage.””

“What footage?””

“The Candy Wall footage.””

I frowned.

“We already saw it.””

“No.””

Omar looked at Lena.

“We saw the edited version.””

My blood went cold.

“What do you mean?””

He opened the file.

The full recording played.

Vanessa approached me.

The shove.

The fall.

The candy wall.

But then the camera angle continued.

After everyone rushed toward me.

After Vanessa grabbed the envelope.

Someone else entered the room.

Someone standing behind the crowd.

Someone who picked up a piece of broken glass.

Someone who removed a tiny recording device hidden inside it.

Omar paused.

The person turned.

May you like

The face appeared.

Robert Hale.
