Chapter 3: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

Daniel Pike entered the private dining room like he owned it.

That was the first thing everyone noticed.

Not the expensive watch.

Not the tailored jacket.

The confidence.

The confidence of someone who believed he was walking into a room he had already won.

Vanessa stood immediately.

“Daniel, what are you doing here?””

He ignored her.

His eyes moved to the table.

The envelope.

The folders.

The frozen faces.

“Well,” he said.

“Looks like I arrived at the interesting part.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about this?””

Daniel smiled.

“About what?””

“That the lease rider was being questioned.””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“I know a lot of things.””

Aaron stood.

“Mr. Pike, this is a private discussion.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Private? About my company?””

The room changed.

Because he said it.

Not “my sister.””

Not “the paperwork.””

“My company.””

Omar slowly opened his notes.

“Can you clarify?””

Daniel looked annoyed.

“You’re the building manager, right?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know the LLC connected to the rent agreement.””

Everyone looked at Aaron.

Aaron didn’t react.

“That LLC is the subject of this discussion.””

Daniel smiled.

“Exactly.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel, stop.””

He turned.

“You told me this was handled.””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What did you say?””

Daniel realized his mistake.

Too late.

Lena leaned forward.

“Handled how?””

Nobody answered.

The silence became an answer.

I looked at Vanessa.

“For weeks, you told everyone this was a misunderstanding.””

“It is.””

“Then why does your brother sound like he knows the outcome?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re making assumptions.””

“No,” I said.

“I’m asking questions.””

He laughed.

“You always do that. You act calm while trying to corner people.””

“And you always enter rooms when you think the damage is already done.””

That landed.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Aaron lifted a hand.

“Enough.””

He opened the lease history.

“We need documents, not insults.””

Daniel sat down.

“Fine.””

Aaron looked at Vanessa.

“The envelope.””

Vanessa slowly opened it.

Inside were several pages.

The first page looked ordinary.

The second page did not.

Lena read the heading.

Then stopped.

“What?””

She looked at Aaron.

“It’s a percentage-rent rider.””

Nobody moved.

Aaron took the document carefully.

“Date?””

He checked.

“Six months ago.””

My chest tightened.

Six months ago was when sales had started increasing.

The restaurant had become our most successful location.

And eight percent of gross sales was not a small number.

Vanessa watched everyone read.

“You’re all acting like this is a crime.””

“No,” Aaron said.

“We’re acting like this is a contract.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“The rider was approved.””

“By whom?”” Aaron asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Aaron looked at Vanessa.

“By whom?””

She looked away.

That was the first crack.

The first moment where confidence became defense.

Lena picked up the document.

“There’s a signature.””

She looked closer.

Then she frowned.

“What?””

“What is it?”” I asked.

She pointed.

“The signature date and the filing date don’t match.””

Aaron took the page.

His expression changed.

That scared me more than anger.

Aaron was not someone who reacted easily.

“This copy is different from the archived version.””

Vanessa stood.

“That’s impossible.””

“Then explain why the records don’t match.””

She looked at Daniel.

And Daniel looked away.

That was when everyone understood.

Whatever happened next, it wasn’t just about the candy wall.

The shove.

The cupcake.

The embarrassment.

Those were distractions.

The real fight had been waiting in a brown envelope.

And now we had proof that someone had changed something.

But we still didn’t know who.

Then Aaron flipped to the final page.

His face went pale.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

“You need to see this.””

I walked closer.

The page contained one sentence.

One sentence that made my entire body go cold.
