Chapter 8: The Name on the Contract
The next twenty-four hours changed everything.
Rachel agreed to meet.
But only in public.
Only during daylight.
Only with cameras nearby.
That told me everything.
She wasn’t being dramatic.
She was afraid.
We met at a small coffee shop across from Union Square.
Rachel looked nothing like I remembered.
Two years ago, she had been confident.
Fast.
Organized.
Now she looked like someone who had spent too long carrying a secret.
“Marcus.””
She sat down.
“Thank you for coming.””
Aaron placed his recorder on the table.
Rachel looked at it.
“Good.””
That surprised me.
“You want this recorded?””
“I want proof I told the truth.””
She took a breath.
“The contract was changed before Vanessa ever saw it.””
Aaron leaned forward.
“Who changed it?””
Rachel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
She opened her bag.
Removed a folder.
And pushed it across the table.
Inside were copies of emails.
My emails.
Except I had never sent them.
Someone had used my account.
Rachel pointed.
“This started eighteen months ago.””
I flipped through the pages.
Approvals.
Instructions.
Transfers.
All written like they came from me.
“But how?””
Rachel looked down.
“Someone had access to your login.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Lena.””
The word landed like a physical blow.
I looked at Aaron.
He didn’t react.
That bothered me.
“You suspected?””
“I suspected everyone.””
Rachel continued.
“Lena didn’t create the entire scheme.””
“Then what did she do?””
“She helped someone get access.””
My hands tightened around the papers.
“Who?””
Rachel looked toward the window.
Then back.
“Your business partner.””
I froze.
“I don’t have a business partner.””
Rachel gave a sad smile.
“You do.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
She pointed at the contract.
“Read the ownership amendment.””
I did.
And there it was.
Hidden in legal language.
A silent transfer.
A controlling interest agreement.
Signed using my authorization.
But not my hand.
The name appeared at the bottom.
I read it once.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
*Lena Ortiz.*
Aaron closed his eyes.
Not surprised.
Confirmed.
“You knew,” I said.
“I suspected.””
“You knew.””
“I suspected she was involved.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“Because suspicion destroys people.””
I looked away.
The worst part was that he was right.
Rachel continued.
“Lena helped create the appearance that she was protecting you because she needed access.””
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Rachel looked at me.
“I know you trust her.””
“She saved the evidence.””
“Because she needed the evidence controlled.””
The sentence hurt because it sounded possible.
Everything sounded possible now.
Rachel reached into the folder.
“One more thing.””
She placed a photograph on the table.
A photograph from six months ago.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And Lena.
Together.
At a private meeting.
My entire world shifted.
Then my phone rang.
Lena.
I answered.
Her voice was shaking.
“Marcus, where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because I know Rachel talked to you.””
I looked at the photograph.
“How?””
Silence.
May you like
Then Lena said:
“Because I was the one who sent her.””
