Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Door
My office had always been the one place I trusted.
That changed when Omar showed us the footage.
The video was grainy.
Black and white.
Silent.
But clear enough.
A person entered my office at 2:13 a.m.
They knew the security code.
They knew where files were stored.
They knew exactly what they were looking for.
“Can you zoom in?”” Lena asked.
Omar did.
The figure moved closer to the desk.
Still impossible to identify.
But then the person turned.
The camera caught the side of their face.
Everyone leaned forward.
Nobody spoke.
Because recognition happened before words.
Lena whispered:
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know them?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Yes,” she finally said.
“Who?””
Lena looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“Someone who had no reason to be there.””
The video continued.
The person opened my drawer.
Removed a folder.
Then placed something inside.
Not stole.
Placed.
Aaron leaned forward.
“Can we identify the object?””
Omar paused the video.
“No.””
The room became silent again.
Because whoever did this wasn’t just taking something.
They were planting something.
Daniel stood.
“This is getting ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You should leave,” Aaron said.
Daniel smiled.
“You still think I’m the problem.””
“I think you’re a person who entered a private meeting without permission and admitted knowledge you shouldn’t have.””
Daniel walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“One warning.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Be careful who you trust.””
The door closed behind him.
Those words stayed with me.
Because they sounded less like a threat.
And more like advice.
Lena sat down.
“I need to tell you something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“I saw someone near your office that night.””
“Who?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa.””
My stomach dropped.
“When?””
“After midnight.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know if it mattered.””
Aaron sighed.
“This is why timing matters.””
I looked at Lena.
“What happened?””
“She said she forgot something.””
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“No, I didn’t.””
That was when everything shifted.
Because Vanessa wasn’t innocent.
But she also wasn’t the only person moving pieces.
Aaron gathered the documents.
“We need a full audit.””
“How long?””
“Long enough to do it correctly.””
I looked toward the window.
Outside, San Francisco moved like nothing had happened.
Cars passed.
People laughed.
The city kept going.
But inside that room, everything I had built felt unstable.
The candy wall had been a distraction.
The envelope had been a warning.
The signature had been a trap.
And now someone had entered my office in the middle of the night to make sure I took the fall.
Then Omar’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
“The security company found another recording.””
“Of what?””
Omar swallowed.
“The person who entered your office.””
A pause.
“They didn’t come alone.””
My heart started pounding.
“Who was with them?””
Omar looked down at the screen.
Then he said the name.
May you like
The one name I never expected.
“Lena Ortiz.””
