Chapter 9: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead
The warehouse smelled of rust, dust, and old machinery.
Marcus stepped inside first.
Ethan followed, holding his phone flashlight toward the ceiling.
"Are you sure this is the right place?"" he asked.
Marcus nodded.
"Your grandfather stored construction equipment here before the company expanded.""
A row of broken windows stretched along the far wall.
Moonlight slipped through the gaps.
Margaret entered behind them.
"Richard used to come here when he wanted to think.""
Ethan looked around.
"He never brought me.""
"You were little," Marcus said.
"He could have.""
Marcus didn't answer.
The words hurt because they were true.
For years, Marcus had protected Ethan from the truth about Richard.
But perhaps he had also protected himself.
He had loved Claire.
He had raised Ethan.
And every time someone mentioned Richard, he had remembered the brother who had fathered the child he called his own.
Margaret stopped beside an old metal cabinet.
"This is it.""
The cabinet had a heavy lock.
Marcus tried the handle.
It didn't move.
"Daniel has the keys?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Richard kept a separate key.""
Ethan looked at the cabinet.
"Where?""
Margaret pointed toward the office at the back.
They walked through a narrow corridor.
The office door was open.
Inside, a wooden desk stood beneath a dusty window.
A photograph of Claire sat on top.
Ethan picked it up.
His mother was smiling.
She looked younger than he remembered.
He ran his thumb over the glass.
"I wish she'd told me.""
Marcus stood beside him.
"So do I.""
Ethan looked at him.
"Did you ever resent him?""
Marcus frowned.
"Who?""
"Richard.""
Marcus looked at the photograph.
"Sometimes.""
"Because he was my father?""
"Because I loved your mother. And I knew she had loved him before me.""
Ethan lowered his eyes.
Marcus continued.
"But I never resented you.""
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Then why did you let Vanessa turn us against each other?""
Marcus's face tightened.
"Because I was afraid of losing the woman I thought I loved.""
Ethan placed the photograph back on the desk.
"You almost lost your son instead.""
Marcus looked down.
"I know.""
A noise came from the corridor.
Both men turned.
Margaret stepped into the doorway.
"Someone's here.""
A shadow moved across the warehouse floor.
Marcus immediately reached for Ethan's arm.
"Stay behind me.""
A man appeared at the far end of the corridor.
He wore a dark coat and carried a leather briefcase.
"Marcus.""
Marcus froze.
The man's face was older, thinner, and marked by a pale scar near his temple.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
"Ethan," Margaret whispered.
The man looked directly at him.
"My son.""
Ethan stopped breathing.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Richard?""
The man nodded.
"Hello, brother.""
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Marcus walked toward him.
"You're dead.""
Richard gave a tired smile.
"Apparently, I was very convincing.""
Marcus grabbed his coat.
"Where have you been?""
Richard looked at his brother's hand.
"Trying to stay alive.""
Ethan stood motionless.
He had imagined meeting his biological father many times.
Sometimes in dreams.
Sometimes during lonely nights when he wondered why certain questions had never been answered.
He had never imagined this.
"You knew about me?""
Richard turned.
"Every day.""
"Then why didn't you come?""
Richard's expression changed.
"Because I was told you were safer without me.""
Marcus released his coat.
"Who told you that?""
Richard looked at Margaret.
Then at Ethan.
"Your mother.""
Ethan shook his head.
"No. She left a letter saying you were my father.""
"She did.""
"Then why didn't you come?""
Richard set his briefcase on the desk.
"Because someone threatened to destroy your life if I did.""
Marcus frowned.
"Who?""
Richard looked at him.
"Adrian.""
The name seemed to fill the room.
Richard opened the briefcase.
Inside were folders, bank records, and photographs.
"I discovered Adrian stealing from the company seven years ago. He wasn't working alone.""
Margaret stepped forward.
"Who was helping him?""
Richard removed a photograph.
It showed Adrian standing beside a woman.
The woman was younger.
Dark-haired.
Wearing a familiar red dress.
Ethan stared.
"That's Vanessa.""
Richard nodded.
"She was already involved with him before she met Marcus.""
Marcus looked sick.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried.""
Richard removed another document.
"Adrian intercepted my messages. Then he arranged the accident that was supposed to kill me.""
Ethan looked at the scar.
"What happened?""
"My car went off a bridge. The authorities believed I died. I survived, but I knew Adrian would come after my family if he discovered I was alive.""
Marcus slowly sat down.
"Three years.""
Richard nodded.
"Three years of watching from a distance.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"You watched me grow up without you?""
Richard looked at him.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I thought keeping you alive mattered more than being known as your father.""
Ethan's eyes filled.
"Did you ever want to meet me?""
Richard's voice cracked.
"Every single day.""
For a moment, Ethan looked like he might embrace him.
Instead, he turned away.
Richard accepted the distance.
Then he opened the final folder.
"There's something else.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"What now?""
"Adrian wasn't just trying to steal the inheritance.""
Richard placed a document on the desk.
"He was trying to gain control of Cole Holdings through a clause buried in the original trust agreement.""
Daniel entered the warehouse with two officers.
"Richard?""
Richard nodded.
Daniel stared.
"You're supposed to be dead.""
"Apparently, that has been useful.""
Daniel examined the document.
"What's this clause?""
Richard pointed to a paragraph.
"If the beneficiary is declared legally incapable of managing his inheritance, the trustee may appoint an external administrator.""
Ethan frowned.
"Who?""
Richard looked at him.
"Adrian.""
Marcus stood.
"How could he possibly get that authority?""
Richard removed another paper.
"By convincing a court that Ethan is unstable, financially irresponsible, and incapable of managing the company.""
Ethan looked at the document.
Then he remembered the staged assault.
The forged property transfer.
The accusations of theft.
The attempt to make him look violent.
He slowly turned toward Marcus.
"Everything Vanessa did was supposed to make me look dangerous.""
Richard nodded.
"Exactly.""
Daniel examined the documents.
"This is substantial evidence.""
One officer stepped forward.
"We've received information that Adrian was arrested forty minutes ago.""
Marcus exhaled.
"Where?""
"Miami.""
Richard closed the briefcase.
"Then there's still a chance.""
Daniel looked up.
"A chance for what?""
Richard's expression became grim.
"To recover the money.""
He removed one final envelope.
Inside was a list of accounts.
But the last account number was unfamiliar.
Daniel read it twice.
Then he looked at Marcus.
"This account is still active.""
Ethan frowned.
"Whose account?""
Richard answered.
"Your grandmother's.""
Daniel went pale.
"That account was never supposed to be accessible.""
Richard looked toward the warehouse entrance.
"Someone accessed it tonight.""
Ethan stared.
"Who?""
Richard turned the document around.
The authorization carried one name.
May you like
*CLAIRE COLE.*
Ethan's dead mother.
