Chapter 7: The Secret Worth More Than a Million Dollars
Daniel locked the front door.
Nobody was leaving until he understood who had sent the message.
"Show me," he said.
I handed him the black phone.
He read the message twice.
"Do you recognize the number?""
"No.""
"Could it be Adrian?""
"I don't know.""
Ethan folded his arms.
"Why would someone threaten her?""
Marcus gave him a tired look.
"Because apparently, your stepmother has spent eighteen months making enemies.""
Daniel placed the phone in a plastic evidence sleeve he had taken from his briefcase.
"I recommend that nobody responds.""
I sat on the sofa, staring at the floor.
The house no longer felt like mine.
The family photographs along the hallway seemed to watch me.
Marcus and Claire at a beach in California.
Ethan at twelve, holding a fishing rod.
Marcus and Ethan standing beside a Christmas tree.
Then the newer photographs.
My wedding.
Our honeymoon.
The anniversary dinner.
I had carefully chosen the frames.
Now I wanted to smash every one.
"Daniel," Marcus said, "tell us about the second trust.""
Daniel opened a thick folder.
"Richard's inheritance was not the only arrangement made by the family. Your mother, Eleanor Cole, established a separate family protection trust nearly twenty years ago.""
Ethan frowned.
"Why?""
"She believed the company would eventually become vulnerable to outside influence.""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Mother was always suspicious of business partners.""
"She was more concerned about family members," Daniel replied.
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
Daniel continued.
"Your grandmother placed a controlling block of voting shares into the trust. The beneficiary was originally Richard.""
Ethan looked at the document.
"Then what happened when he died?""
"The trust agreement contained a succession clause. Richard's biological child would inherit his position.""
Ethan looked at Marcus.
"So it comes to me?""
"Yes.""
Daniel turned the page.
"Your grandmother also added a condition. The beneficiary must be formally recognized by the family trustees before exercising the voting rights.""
Ethan frowned.
"Who are the trustees?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Three people. Marcus, myself, and a third independent trustee.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
"Your stepmother.""
The room went silent.
I lifted my head.
Marcus stared at Daniel.
"Vanessa?""
"She was appointed eighteen months ago, shortly after your marriage.""
Ethan laughed in disbelief.
"You appointed her?""
Marcus looked at me.
"She told me it was an administrative position.""
"It was," I said quickly.
Daniel shook his head.
"Not exactly. The trustee agreement gave her access to confidential records and authority to request certain transactions.""
Marcus sat down.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I thought you knew.""
I looked at Daniel.
"You're making this sound criminal.""
He removed another document.
"Your signature appears on a request to change the beneficiary succession terms.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"What?""
Daniel placed the paper between them.
"The request would have removed the automatic transfer to Ethan and placed the voting shares under an external management company.""
Ethan read the name.
"Vantage Lifestyle Holdings.""
My mouth went dry.
Marcus looked at me.
"You tried to take his inheritance before he could claim it.""
I shook my head.
"I was trying to protect the company.""
"From whom?""
"From someone who had no experience running it.""
Ethan laughed.
"Someone?""
"You don't know anything about business.""
"Then teach me. Don't steal from me.""
Marcus rubbed his face.
"Why would you do this?""
I finally lost my temper.
"Because nobody ever gave me anything!""
The words exploded out of me.
Everyone stared.
I stood.
"Do you know what it's like to spend your entire life watching other people walk into rooms and get everything handed to them? Their names are on buildings. Their fathers leave them fortunes. Their mothers write letters explaining how special they are.""
I pointed at Ethan.
"And you never had to earn any of it!""
Ethan didn't respond.
I turned toward Marcus.
"You married me, but you never really made me part of your family. I was always the woman who came after Claire. The woman who was supposed to smile and be grateful.""
Marcus's expression softened for half a second.
Then it hardened again.
"You could have built something with us.""
"I tried.""
"No. You tried to take what belonged to us.""
My eyes filled.
"Adrian promised me a different life.""
Marcus looked disgusted.
"So you sold your conscience for a promise?""
I couldn't answer.
Daniel closed the folder.
"There's another issue.""
Marcus sighed.
"Of course there is.""
"The trust documents include a provision concerning fraud by a trustee. If a trustee is found to have acted dishonestly, their authority is immediately suspended.""
Ethan looked at him.
"Meaning?""
"Vanessa can no longer authorize transactions or represent the trust.""
Marcus nodded.
"Do it.""
Daniel removed a form.
"I'll need your signature and the independent trustee's approval.""
"Who is the independent trustee?"" Ethan asked.
Daniel checked the document.
"Margaret Ellis.""
Marcus looked surprised.
"Margaret?""
"Your mother's former financial adviser.""
Ethan frowned.
"Is she still alive?""
Daniel nodded.
"Very much so.""
He reached for his phone.
"I'll contact her.""
Before he could dial, a voice came from the hallway.
"There's no need.""
We all turned.
An older woman stood in the doorway.
She wore a charcoal coat and carried a small leather handbag.
Her silver hair was pinned neatly behind her ears.
Marcus stood immediately.
"Margaret?""
She nodded.
"I received a call from Daniel. I was already nearby.""
Her eyes moved to Ethan.
Then to the photograph of Claire still lying on the table.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
Ethan stood.
"Do you know me?""
Margaret smiled sadly.
"I knew you before you could walk.""
She approached him.
"Your grandmother adored you. Your mother trusted me. And your uncle made me promise something before he died.""
Ethan swallowed.
"What?""
Margaret opened her handbag.
She removed a small envelope.
The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.
RICHARD COLE.
Margaret placed it in Ethan's hands.
"He told me to give you this only when you were old enough to understand why your mother kept certain secrets.""
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Richard holding a baby.
On the back was a handwritten note.
If anyone tries to use my son to steal what I left him, tell him to look at the people who were supposed to protect him.
Ethan looked up.
Margaret's eyes moved toward me.
Then she spoke.
"There's one more thing you should know about Adrian Vale.""
My stomach tightened.
Margaret continued.
"Richard knew him.""
Marcus frowned.
"How?""
"Because Adrian worked for the Cole family before Vanessa ever met him.""
Ethan stared.
"What?""
Margaret nodded.
"He was dismissed after an internal investigation.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"An investigation into what?""
Margaret looked directly at me.
"An attempted theft from the original family trust.""
I felt my legs weaken.
Margaret reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a photograph of a much younger Adrian standing beside Richard.
May you like
And on the back, Richard had written:
Never trust this man with a signature.
