Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Plan

Marcus took the photograph from Margaret.

He studied it for several seconds.

"How long have you known?""

Margaret sat down.

"Since Richard hired Adrian.""

Ethan looked between them.

"Why was he working for Uncle Richard?""

"He was a financial consultant," Margaret explained.

"Richard believed he was talented. Unfortunately, he also discovered Adrian had been moving money through accounts that didn't belong to him.""

Marcus's face darkened.

"Why wasn't he prosecuted?""

"Richard wanted to avoid a public scandal. Adrian resigned, returned part of the money, and signed a settlement.""

Ethan looked at me.

"And you married him.""

I lowered my eyes.

Margaret continued.

"Richard believed Adrian would return one day. He warned me that the man was patient and ambitious.""

Daniel opened his laptop.

"That would explain the company structure.""

Marcus looked at him.

"What structure?""

"Vantage Lifestyle Holdings wasn't created eighteen months ago. The company was originally registered under a different name seven years earlier.""

Ethan frowned.

"Seven years?""

Daniel nodded.

"It was dormant for years. Then someone reactivated it shortly before Vanessa married you.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Adrian planned this before you met me.""

I shook my head.

"He told me he wanted a fresh start.""

Margaret gave a quiet, humorless laugh.

"Men like Adrian don't start fresh. They start over with new victims.""

I stood.

"Enough. You don't know anything about my marriage.""

Margaret looked at me.

"I know he used your name to hide his transactions. I know he used your signature to move money. And I know he has been telling people that you were the one responsible.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

Daniel turned his laptop around.

A series of emails appeared.

The first was dated six months earlier.

The sender was Adrian Vale.

The recipient was an offshore attorney.

The subject line read:

*FINAL TRANSFER — VANESSA'S AUTHORIZATION.*

Marcus began reading.

The email described a plan to move the family funds into accounts controlled by Adrian.

It also contained a paragraph about Vanessa.

If anything goes wrong, she will be the public face of the operation. Her marriage gives her access. Her signature gives us distance. If the authorities come, she will have no choice but to cooperate.

I stared at the screen.

"He's setting me up.""

Nobody answered.

I read the paragraph again.

My name.

My signature.

My future.

All arranged like pieces on a board.

For the first time, I understood that Adrian had never intended to share the money.

He had intended to leave me holding the evidence.

Ethan looked at me.

"Did you know?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Did you know he planned to use you?""

"No.""

"Then why did you help him?""

I looked away.

Because I had wanted the money.

Because I had wanted the house.

Because I had wanted to become someone who never had to worry about being poor again.

But saying that aloud would make everything real.

Margaret stood.

"There's no point arguing. We need to find Adrian before he disappears.""

Daniel checked his phone.

"I've already contacted the bank's fraud team.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Do you know where he is?""

I hesitated.

Then I remembered the message.

The old Cole warehouse.

"I received a text.""

Daniel immediately looked up.

"What text?""

I showed him the message.

He read it.

"Do you know the warehouse?""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"That's our original storage facility. We sold it years ago.""

Ethan frowned.

"Why would Adrian go there?""

Margaret's face changed.

"Because Richard kept something there.""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

"A locked archive. Original trust documents, company records, and correspondence.""

Daniel stood.

"Does it still exist?""

"I don't know," Marcus said.

"The property was supposed to be cleared.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Richard never trusted digital records. He kept copies of everything.""

Ethan looked at the message.

"Then that's where we need to go.""

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

"Why?""

"Because this could be a trap.""

Ethan looked at his father.

"He's been stealing from me for months. If there's evidence there, I want it.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"You've already been through enough tonight.""

Ethan's voice softened.

"Then stop treating me like a child.""

Marcus looked at him.

For a moment, I thought he would argue.

Instead, he nodded.

"You're right.""

He turned toward Daniel.

"We're going to the warehouse.""

Margaret reached for her coat.

"I'll come too.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. I'll contact the authorities and meet you there.""

Marcus looked at me.

"And Vanessa?""

I stiffened.

"You're staying here.""

I laughed.

"You can't leave me under house arrest.""

"You're not under arrest. You're being asked not to leave while the authorities investigate.""

"You're my husband.""

Marcus's expression didn't change.

"Not for much longer.""

He walked away.

I watched him leave with Ethan.

Then I looked at Margaret.

She was still standing beside the dining table.

"Do you hate me?"" I asked.

She looked at me for a long moment.

"No.""

I almost smiled.

Then she added:

"I pity you.""

She followed them outside.

The front door closed.

I stood alone in the enormous house.

For several minutes, I didn't move.

Then I rushed upstairs.

I packed my passport, jewelry, cash, and two changes of clothes.

I was halfway through closing my suitcase when my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

Adrian's voice came through.

"Did you get my message?""

"Where are you?""

"Not important.""

"They know everything.""

He laughed.

"Then you should have been more careful.""

I gripped the phone.

"You used me.""

"Don't be dramatic.""

"Your emails say I'm supposed to take the blame.""

A pause.

Then he spoke.

"Listen to me, Vanessa. You wanted the money. You helped me get it. Don't pretend you're innocent now.""

"I trusted you.""

"That was your first mistake.""

I heard a door slam on his end.

Then a second voice.

A man's voice.

"Adrian, the police are on their way.""

Adrian swore.

"Where did you get that?""

The call became chaotic.

I heard footsteps.

A crash.

Then Adrian whispered:

"Vanessa, there's something you need to know.""

"What?""

"Richard didn't die three years ago.""

My blood turned cold.

"What are you talking about?""

Adrian's voice dropped.

"His death was staged.""

The line went dead.

I stood frozen.

Richard Cole.

Ethan's biological father.

The man whose photograph was on the table.

The man everyone believed had died three years earlier.

My phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared.

This time, it wasn't from Adrian.

May you like

It was from a number I recognized from the family office records.

*RICHARD COLE: I KNOW WHAT YOU DID TO MY SON.*
