Chapter 2: The Recording Didn't Lie

The dining room became so quiet that I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Marcus held his phone in both hands.

The recording continued.

There I was, smiling at Ethan.

There was no trembling.

No fear.

No frightened woman begging for help.

Just me.

A woman standing in an expensive dress, offering her stepson a fortune to disappear.

"Three hundred thousand dollars," the recorded version of my voice said.

"It's all here.""

Marcus paused the video.

Slowly, he turned toward me.

"Vanessa?""

I forced a small laugh.

"Darling, you know how easily things can be misunderstood.""

He looked back at the screen.

"Let's keep watching.""

I reached for his arm.

"Marcus, please. Ethan has been provoking me for months.""

Ethan stood beside the dining table, pressing a napkin against his bleeding lip.

"Let it play, Dad.""

Marcus pressed the button.

The recording continued.

My voice came through the speakers.

"Take the money and disappear.""

Then Ethan's voice.

"Does Dad know?""

And my answer.

"Your father doesn't need to know everything.""

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, his expression had changed.

"Why would you say that?""

I swallowed.

"Because I was upset.""

"You were offering my son money to leave.""

"I was trying to resolve a family disagreement.""

"By paying him three hundred thousand dollars?""

"He wanted money!""

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"That's another lie.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't.""

"You've spent months telling Dad I'm stealing from him. Now you want him to believe I demanded three hundred thousand dollars?""

Marcus raised one hand.

"Enough. Both of you.""

He restarted the recording.

This time, it showed me reaching for Ethan's phone.

It showed him stepping away.

It showed him saying, "Don't touch me.""

And then it showed me tearing my own dress.

Marcus stopped the recording.

He stared at the screen for several seconds.

Then he looked at my shoulder.

The torn silk hung loosely against my arm.

"Did he do that?""

I couldn't answer.

"Vanessa. Did Ethan tear your dress?""

I lifted my chin.

"He frightened me.""

"That's not what I asked.""

"I was scared!""

"Did he touch you?""

My silence lasted too long.

Ethan lowered the napkin.

"No, Dad. He didn't.""

Marcus turned toward his son.

"Sit down.""

"I'm fine.""

"You're bleeding.""

"I've been bleeding since you punched me.""

Marcus flinched.

I recognized the expression.

Guilt.

It was the emotion I had used to control him for eighteen months.

I needed it back.

I began crying.

"Marcus, you're really going to believe him over your wife?""

He looked at me.

"I'm believing what I can see.""

I stepped closer.

"You know what your son is like.""

"Apparently, I don't.""

The words were quiet.

They frightened me more than shouting would have.

I reached for his hand.

"Darling, think about everything I've done for you.""

He pulled away.

"What does that have to do with this recording?""

"Everything! I've tried so hard to make this family work.""

Ethan gave a tired laugh.

"You tried to make sure there was only room for you.""

I turned sharply.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""

"No. I'm just relieved.""

"Relieved?""

"Because now I don't have to spend another year wondering how you're going to make me look like the villain.""

Marcus looked between us.

Then he noticed the envelope.

He picked it up.

"What's this?""

I moved immediately.

"Nothing important.""

He turned it over.

His eyes narrowed.

"Why is there a signature line?""

Ethan answered.

"She wanted me to sign a document saying I was leaving the house voluntarily.""

Marcus opened it.

I watched his expression change as he read.

The document stated that Ethan was accepting a financial settlement and voluntarily surrendering any future claim to the family estate.

Marcus looked up.

"What is this supposed to mean?""

I took a breath.

"It was a practical arrangement.""

"A practical arrangement?""

"You're getting older, Marcus. You need to think about your estate.""

Ethan looked at his father.

"She's been asking about your will.""

Marcus's eyes moved toward me.

"How long?""

I shook my head.

"He's twisting everything.""

"How long have you been discussing my will?""

"I was only trying to understand our financial future.""

Marcus folded the document.

"My financial future?""

"Our future.""

He placed the envelope on the table.

Then he did something I hadn't expected.

He picked up the cash.

One bundle at a time.

He placed all the money back into a black leather case.

"Where did this come from, Vanessa?""

I forced a smile.

"My personal savings.""

"Three hundred thousand dollars?""

"Yes.""

"From which account?""

I hesitated.

He noticed.

"Which account?""

I looked toward the staircase.

"I don't remember the exact details.""

Marcus took out his phone again.

"Then we'll have the bank verify it.""

My heart began beating faster.

"Why are you treating me like a criminal?""

"Because my son was just offered three hundred thousand dollars to disappear from his own home, and I want to know why.""

Ethan quietly walked toward the hallway.

Marcus stopped him.

"Where are you going?""

"Upstairs. I'll pack.""

"You're not going anywhere.""

Ethan turned.

"Dad, I can't stay here.""

Marcus looked at the blood on his son's lip.

Then at the camera.

Then at me.

"You're my son. This is your home.""

For the first time that evening, Ethan's expression softened.

He looked almost like a little boy again.

"Then why did you believe her?""

Marcus had no answer.

I did.

Because I had spent eighteen months making sure he would.

But before I could speak, Marcus's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His attorney.

Daniel Brooks.

Marcus answered.

"Daniel, I'm dealing with something. Can it wait?""

A pause.

Then his expression changed.

"What do you mean the bank called?""

I stopped breathing.

Marcus turned away from us.

"Which account?""

Another pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

"The trust account?""

Ethan slowly turned toward me.

Marcus's voice dropped.

"How much?""

Silence.

Then Marcus said four words.

"Don't touch anything. I'm coming.""

He ended the call.

I tried to smile.

"What's happened?""

May you like

Marcus stared at me.

"Vanessa, where is the money that was supposed to be in my son's education trust?""
