Chapter 9: The Truth Andre Had Kept for Six Years

Vanessa stared at the envelope.

Malcolm stood motionless.

"What is it?"" she asked.

"Nothing.""

"Then why are you afraid of it?""

He extended his hand.

"Give it to me.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Vanessa, please.""

The word sounded unnatural coming from him.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter and several photocopied documents.

The first page began with Andre's familiar words.

Vanessa,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I was unable to explain to you while we were still together.

Her hands began to tremble.

She continued.

Six weeks ago, I discovered that money was being transferred from our company through unauthorized accounts. I suspected someone inside the finance department, but I didn't know who.

Daniel believed it was Malcolm Hayes.

I didn't want to believe him.

Vanessa looked up.

Malcolm's expression had hardened.

"Put it down.""

She continued reading.

Malcolm had recently introduced himself as a consultant. He was helpful, charming, and seemed genuinely interested in our work.

But Daniel discovered that Malcolm had been asking questions about our patents and investor agreements.

I confronted him once. He denied everything.

The next paragraph made Vanessa's stomach turn.

I also learned that Malcolm had approached you.

She stopped.

Andre had known.

He had known Malcolm was interested in her before their marriage ended.

The letter continued.

I wanted to tell you. But I didn't have enough proof, and I didn't want you to think I was accusing someone simply because I was jealous or afraid of losing you.

Vanessa lowered the page.

"Andre knew.""

Malcolm said nothing.

She looked at him.

"Did you know he suspected you?""

Malcolm's jaw tightened.

"You're reading something written by a desperate man.""

She turned back to the letter.

If the company survives, I will make sure every person who worked honestly receives what they are owed.

If it doesn't, I hope you understand that I tried.

The final lines were handwritten more heavily.

I still love you, Vanessa. But I won't ask you to stay if you no longer believe in me.

She pressed the letter against her chest.

For six years, she had believed Andre had hidden his financial struggles from her.

She had believed he was careless, secretive, and incapable of protecting their future.

But he had known about the betrayal.

He had been trying to protect her from it.

And she had walked away before he could explain.

Malcolm reached for the papers.

Vanessa stepped back.

"Don't touch them.""

His voice changed.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

She looked at him.

"You said you loved me.""

"I did.""

"Was any of it real?""

Malcolm looked away.

"Vanessa, people meet for different reasons.""

She laughed bitterly.

"That's not an answer.""

He took a breath.

"At first, I wanted information. Yes. But things changed.""

"When?""

He didn't answer.

"When we bought this house? When you put a ring on my finger? When you told me you wanted children?""

Malcolm's eyes flickered.

"Vanessa—"

"Did you ever love me?""

He looked at her.

"I cared about you.""

She shook her head.

"That isn't the same.""

"No.""

The honesty was almost worse than another lie.

Vanessa picked up the document case.

"I'm finished.""

Malcolm grabbed her wrist.

"You're not going anywhere with that.""

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

"Give it to me.""

She raised her phone.

"I've already called the police.""

Malcolm froze.

Then he looked toward the front window.

A siren sounded in the distance.

For the first time, he understood that he was losing control.

He released her.

But before he could move toward the door, two officers entered the house.

One of them approached.

"Mr. Hayes?""

Malcolm straightened.

"Yes?""

"We need to speak with you about an ongoing financial investigation.""

"This is a private residence.""

"Are you carrying any identification?""

Malcolm reached into his coat.

Vanessa stepped away.

The second officer approached her.

"Ma'am, are you all right?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Do you need medical attention?""

"No. But I have documents you need to see.""

She held up the case.

At Helix headquarters, Andre was waiting when Vanessa arrived with Eleanor.

He stood as she entered the conference room.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she placed the document case on the table.

"I found it.""

Andre looked at the case.

His eyes softened.

"Thank you.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"There's something else.""

She placed the handwritten letter beside it.

Andre stared.

"You found that?""

"In the same envelope.""

He picked it up.

His handwriting was still visible.

"I thought I'd destroyed this.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't want to keep reading it.""

Vanessa looked down.

"I read everything.""

Andre nodded slowly.

"Then you know.""

"Yes.""

He placed the letter on the table.

She looked at him.

"You knew Malcolm was interested in me.""

"I suspected he wanted access to our records.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I tried.""

"Not enough.""

Andre considered that.

"Maybe you're right.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"You could have fought harder.""

"I could have.""

"You could have come after me.""

"I could have.""

"Why didn't you?""

Andre looked directly at her.

"Because I loved you. And I thought if I had to beg someone to believe in me, I had already lost the marriage.""

She lowered her head.

The words were gentle.

But they hurt.

Eleanor opened the document case.

Inside were the original patent assignment, university correspondence, and several signed technical agreements.

She reviewed each page.

Then she stopped.

"Mr. Bennett.""

"What?""

She turned one document toward him.

"This resolves the ownership issue.""

Andre leaned forward.

Eleanor pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"The university's original assignment was conditional upon a specific funding agreement. This document proves the condition was met before the transfer to Helix.""

Andre read the paragraph.

Then he looked at Daniel, who had just entered the room.

Daniel examined it.

"That's it.""

Eleanor nodded.

"The patent ownership is substantially stronger than we previously believed.""

Andre exhaled.

For six years, the missing assignment had been a shadow over the company's original technology.

Now it was finally in their hands.

But Vanessa wasn't looking at the document.

She was looking at Andre.

"I found something else," she said.

Andre turned.

"What?""

She handed him the second set of papers from the envelope.

"Your original notes about Malcolm.""

He read them.

One page contained a list of dates.

Another contained the names of people who had been involved in the early transfers.

And beneath the list was a handwritten sentence.

If Vanessa is implicated, make sure she understands she was not responsible.

Andre looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

"You wrote that before we divorced.""

"Yes.""

"Even after I told you I was leaving?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Andre closed the folder.

"Because whatever happened between us, I never wanted you blamed for something you didn't do.""

Vanessa covered her face.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she said the words she had been trying to say since the gala.

"I'm sorry I laughed at you.""

Andre remained quiet.

"I'm sorry I made you feel small when you were already struggling. I'm sorry I told people you had nothing to offer.""

Her voice broke.

"And I'm sorry I never believed you.""

Andre looked at her.

"Thank you for saying that.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Can we ever be friends again?""

He considered the question.

"I don't know.""

She nodded.

It wasn't the answer she wanted.

But it was honest.

Later that afternoon, Eleanor received a call from the police.

Malcolm had been questioned.

He had denied forging the authorization, but the investigators had obtained his messages with Peter Lawson.

More importantly, the recording Daniel had supplied had been authenticated.

The case was no longer simply a corporate dispute.

It involved suspected fraud, forgery, and financial misconduct.

Andre listened carefully.

"What's the next step?""

"The investigators are preparing additional requests for financial records," Eleanor explained.

"Good.""

She hesitated.

"There's another development.""

"What?""

"Malcolm's attorney has informed us that he intends to cooperate.""

Andre frowned.

"Why?""

"He's offering information about the original transfers.""

"What's he asking for?""

Eleanor checked her notes.

"Immunity.""

Andre laughed once.

"That's not our decision.""

"No. But he may have something valuable.""

"What?""

Eleanor looked at the final page.

"He says he can identify the person who first arranged the fraudulent transfer.""

Andre's expression changed.
