Chapter 2: The Signature That Could Change Everything
The following morning, Vanessa woke up to thirty-seven missed messages.
Some came from friends.
Others came from former colleagues.
Three were from people she hadn't spoken to in years.
The first message she opened was from a woman named Rebecca, who had attended the gala.
*Rebecca: Girl, was that really your ex-husband?*
The second was less polite.
*Unknown Number: You publicly embarrassed the CEO of your boyfriend's company. That's quite a talent.*
Vanessa threw her phone onto the bed.
She sat up, rubbing her forehead.
The previous evening replayed in her mind.
Andre's entrance.
Malcolm's expression.
The chairman's announcement.
The applause.
She remembered how the room had looked at her afterward.
Not with sympathy.
With curiosity.
As though everyone wanted to know what kind of woman had once been married to Andre Bennett and failed to recognize him.
Downstairs, Malcolm was already in the kitchen.
His laptop was open on the counter.
A half-finished espresso sat beside it.
"Morning," Vanessa said.
He didn't look up.
"Morning.""
She poured herself coffee.
"So, about last night.""
Malcolm continued typing.
"What about it?""
"You're being strange.""
"I'm working.""
"You're always working.""
He finally looked at her.
"Vanessa, I have a board meeting at nine. The contract I negotiated is worth nearly four hundred million dollars. Whether it proceeds depends on a man you decided to insult in front of the company's senior leadership.""
She placed her cup down.
"I didn't know who he was.""
"That doesn't make it better.""
"He was my husband. I know what he was like.""
Malcolm closed his laptop.
"Apparently, you don't.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Are you blaming me?""
"I'm telling you that you made a very bad impression.""
"He was deliberately trying to embarrass me.""
Malcolm stared at her.
"How?""
"He could have told me he owned the company.""
"Why would he?""
"Because we were married!""
Malcolm rubbed his forehead.
"You haven't spoken to him in six years.""
"Exactly. Six years. How was I supposed to know?""
"You weren't supposed to know. You were supposed to behave like an adult.""
Vanessa went silent.
Malcolm stood and collected his laptop.
"I need to get to the office.""
"Are you going to talk to him?""
"Yes.""
"Good. Explain that I didn't mean anything by it.""
He stopped at the doorway.
"Vanessa, he doesn't owe you an explanation for anything.""
Then he left.
At 9:15, Malcolm entered the executive conference room on the forty-second floor of Helix Dynamics.
The room overlooked downtown Chicago.
A long glass table reflected the morning sunlight.
Andre sat at its head, wearing a dark navy suit. His father's old jacket was nowhere to be seen.
Beside him sat the chief financial officer, the general counsel, and three board members.
A large presentation screen displayed the proposed infrastructure partnership.
Malcolm took his seat.
"Good morning.""
Andre nodded.
"Good morning, Malcolm.""
The chairman, Richard Collins, opened a folder.
"Let's begin with the revised partnership agreement.""
Malcolm connected his laptop.
"I've prepared the final financial projections and implementation schedule.""
Andre studied the first slide.
"Before we discuss the numbers, I have a question.""
"Of course.""
"Why does the agreement include a thirty-six-month exclusivity clause?""
Malcolm smiled.
"Standard protection for the investment.""
"For whom?""
"The partner, obviously.""
Andre looked toward the general counsel.
"Is that standard in our previous agreements?""
"Not in this form," she answered.
Malcolm shifted in his chair.
"It's necessary to secure the scale of the commitment.""
Andre turned another page.
"And why does the agreement include a consulting fee of twelve million dollars to Hayes Strategic Advisory?""
The room became quiet.
Malcolm's smile disappeared.
"That's a separate advisory arrangement.""
"With your brother-in-law's firm?""
"He's an experienced consultant.""
Andre closed the folder.
"Does the board know that?""
Richard Collins looked at Malcolm.
"I wasn't aware of that relationship.""
Malcolm straightened.
"I disclosed the advisory firm during the initial discussions.""
The general counsel checked her notes.
"No, you didn't.""
Malcolm's face tightened.
"Perhaps it was in an earlier draft.""
Andre remained calm.
"Malcolm, did you negotiate a personal financial benefit through this agreement?""
"It's a legitimate advisory fee.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Malcolm glanced around the room.
"I brought this opportunity to Helix. I created the relationship. I deserve compensation for that work.""
Andre nodded.
"Then put your compensation in your employment agreement. Don't hide it inside a corporate partnership.""
Richard cleared his throat.
"I think we should suspend the approval until legal completes a review.""
Malcolm pushed his chair back.
"You're going to kill a four-hundred-million-dollar deal over a consulting fee?""
Andre looked directly at him.
"No. I'm going to protect a four-hundred-million-dollar company from an agreement that wasn't properly disclosed.""
The meeting ended without a signature.
At lunchtime, Vanessa arrived at Helix headquarters.
She wore a cream-colored suit and carried a designer handbag.
The receptionist recognized her immediately.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Cole.""
"I need to see Malcolm.""
"Do you have an appointment?""
"I'm his partner.""
The receptionist smiled politely.
"I'm aware. Unfortunately, Mr. Hayes is in a meeting.""
"Then I'll wait.""
She took a seat near the reception desk.
Twenty minutes later, Malcolm emerged from the elevator.
He looked furious.
Vanessa stood.
"How did it go?""
"Not well.""
"What happened?""
"Andre rejected the agreement.""
She lowered her voice.
"Because of me?""
"Not entirely.""
"What does that mean?""
Malcolm walked toward a private corridor.
She followed.
"Vanessa, not here.""
"Then where?""
He stopped beside the elevator.
"Your ex-husband thinks I'm hiding something.""
"Are you?""
Malcolm looked at her sharply.
"Don't start.""
She raised both hands.
"I'm asking a question.""
He pressed the elevator button.
"The advisory fee is legitimate. My brother-in-law has connections and provided introductions.""
"Then why is it a problem?""
"Because Andre wants everything documented.""
Vanessa considered this.
"Maybe I can speak to him.""
Malcolm laughed without humor.
"Absolutely not.""
"Why?""
"Because he doesn't want to see you.""
She flinched.
"How do you know?""
"Because when I mentioned your name, he said the past was irrelevant to the company's business.""
Vanessa stared at him.
She had expected anger from Andre.
Perhaps resentment.
Perhaps even some awkward attempt to discuss their marriage.
But irrelevance?
That was worse.
She stepped closer.
"Malcolm, I need you to understand something. Andre was not always like this. I knew him before Helix. I know how he thinks.""
Malcolm's expression changed.
"Then perhaps you should tell me something.""
"What?""
"Did Andre have any business partners before the divorce?""
Vanessa frowned.
"Yes. A man named Daniel. I think.""
"Daniel what?""
"Mercer, maybe. Why?""
Malcolm looked toward the elevator.
"Because someone told me that Daniel Mercer was removed from the original Helix partnership under unusual circumstances.""
Vanessa felt a strange uneasiness.
"I don't know anything about that.""
"Think carefully.""
"Why?""
Malcolm lowered his voice.
"Because Andre's original company was almost bankrupt. And if the story I've heard is true, someone helped him secure the contract that turned everything around.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Andre did that himself.""
"Maybe.""
The elevator doors opened.
Malcolm stepped inside.
Before they closed, he looked at her.
"Find out what happened to Daniel Mercer.""
That evening, Vanessa returned to the house she shared with Malcolm.
She went upstairs, opened an old storage cabinet, and pulled out a box of photographs.
She had kept almost nothing from her marriage.
A wedding album.
Two Christmas cards.
An old photograph of Andre standing outside a small engineering office.
She stared at his face.
He looked younger.
Thinner.
But the same quiet determination was in his eyes.
Beneath the photograph was an envelope.
She recognized the handwriting immediately.
Andre's.
It was dated three weeks before their divorce.
She opened it.
Inside was a single folded letter.
Vanessa,
I know you are tired of waiting. I know you don't believe the company will survive.
But something happened today. Daniel and I received confirmation that our technology has passed the final federal evaluation.
If the funding comes through, I can finally pay everyone, including you for the money you lent us.
Please give me until the end of the month.
I don't want to lose you.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
She read it again.
Then again.
She remembered that month.
She remembered signing the divorce papers.
She remembered telling her friends that Andre had no future.
But she had never seen this letter.
Or had she?
She turned the envelope over.
There was a handwritten note on the back.
P.S. Daniel says the board wants to meet us on Friday. I think this is finally happening.
Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.
For the first time, she wondered whether the man she had left had actually been telling the truth.
Then her phone rang.
Malcolm.
She answered immediately.
"Hello?""
His voice was tense.
"Vanessa, I need you to come downstairs.""
"Why?""
"I found something.""
"What?""
He paused.
"Daniel Mercer wasn't just Andre's business partner.""
Vanessa looked at the letter in her hand.
"What was he?""
Malcolm's answer was almost a whisper.
"He was the person who originally introduced Andre to the government investors.""
May you like
And then he added something that made her stomach turn.
"Your name appears in the financial records, too.""
