Chapter 7: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
Daniel Mercer arrived at Helix Dynamics at 10:15 a.m.
He was sixty-one, with silver hair, a slightly uneven walk, and the tired expression of a man who had spent years fighting a battle nobody wanted to acknowledge.
Andre met him personally in the lobby.
For several seconds, the two men simply looked at each other.
Then Daniel extended his hand.
"Still wearing expensive suits, Bennett?""
Andre smiled faintly.
"Still complaining about everything, Mercer?""
Daniel laughed.
It was the first time either man had smiled that morning.
They shook hands.
But the warmth disappeared when they entered the conference room.
Daniel placed a battered leather briefcase on the table.
"I kept everything.""
Andre looked at it.
"Everything?""
"Every contract, every invoice, every email I could recover.""
Eleanor opened her laptop.
"Let's start with the original authorization.""
Daniel removed a folder.
"This is the copy I signed. This is the copy you signed.""
He placed both documents side by side.
Then he produced a third.
"And this is the version Malcolm submitted.""
Andre examined it.
The financial figures were identical.
The signatures were not.
Eleanor leaned forward.
"Where did you obtain this?""
"From a storage unit I rented when I left the company.""
"Why did you keep it?""
Daniel looked at Andre.
"Because I knew somebody would eventually try to rewrite history.""
Andre remained quiet.
Daniel turned another page.
"Malcolm wasn't working alone.""
"Who else?"" Andre asked.
Daniel pointed to a name.
"Peter Lawson.""
Andre frowned.
"Peter?""
Peter had been the company's original financial controller.
He had worked beside Andre for four years before leaving for another firm.
"What's his connection?""
Daniel opened another document.
"He processed the payments. He also created the shell company that received the licensing fees.""
Eleanor checked the records.
"Peter Lawson resigned eighteen months after the transfer.""
"Correct," Daniel replied.
Andre looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me this six years ago?""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Because I tried.""
The room became quiet.
"I called you. I emailed you. I sent letters to the office. Every time, I was told you were unavailable.""
Andre stared.
"Who told you that?""
"Malcolm.""
Daniel took a breath.
"And then I received a letter from your attorney saying I had accepted the settlement and should stop contacting the company.""
Andre looked toward Eleanor.
"Do we have that letter?""
"We'll search the archive.""
Daniel nodded.
"I have a copy.""
He placed it on the table.
Andre read it.
The signature belonged to his former legal representative.
But the language was unfamiliar.
"This isn't how our attorney wrote," Andre said.
"Exactly.""
Eleanor examined the letter.
"I'll have it authenticated.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"There's something else.""
Andre looked at him.
"What?""
"The night before I left, I recorded a conversation with Malcolm.""
Eleanor stopped typing.
"Why?""
"Because he came to my apartment and told me I had two choices. Accept the settlement or face criminal accusations over the missing intellectual property.""
Andre's face darkened.
"What did he say?""
Daniel opened his briefcase again.
He removed a small digital recorder.
"I made a backup.""
Eleanor carefully took it.
"Does it still work?""
Daniel nodded.
"I checked it yesterday.""
An hour later, they sat around a conference table while the recording played.
At first, there was only background noise.
A door closing.
A chair moving.
Then Malcolm's voice.
"You're making this unnecessarily difficult, Daniel.""
Daniel's recorded voice answered.
"You moved money that belonged to the company.""
"It was a restructuring.""
"It was theft.""
"Be careful.""
"I helped build this place, Malcolm. I know exactly what the patents are worth.""
A pause followed.
Then Malcolm spoke again.
"Andre signed the transfer.""
"He signed a preliminary authorization. He never approved the final amount.""
"That's your interpretation.""
"And Vanessa?""
Malcolm laughed.
"Vanessa won't be a problem.""
"She didn't sign it.""
"She won't remember anything about the paperwork. She was already leaving him.""
Daniel's recorded voice became angry.
"You used his marriage to cover your tracks?""
"Don't be dramatic.""
"You're going to destroy that man's life.""
Malcolm's response was chilling.
"Andre is too busy trying to save his company to notice what I'm doing. And when he finally understands, the money will be gone.""
The recording continued for another two minutes.
Then came the sentence that made Eleanor stop the playback.
"By the time anyone asks questions, Daniel will be the man who stole the technology, and Vanessa will be the woman who authorized the money.""
The room was silent.
Andre looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you release this years ago?""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Because Malcolm told me he had copies of your private emails. He said he'd make it look like you and I had stolen from the company together.""
Andre looked down.
"I would have believed you.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Maybe. But I wasn't willing to gamble your future on it.""
For a long moment, Andre said nothing.
Then he stood and walked toward the window.
He had spent six years believing Daniel had abandoned him.
He had allowed the separation to become a permanent wound.
And all that time, Daniel had been carrying evidence that could have changed everything.
"I'm sorry," Andre said.
Daniel looked at him.
"For what?""
"For not finding you.""
Daniel stood.
"Then find the truth now.""
That afternoon, Vanessa received a call from Eleanor.
"Ms. Cole, we need you to come in.""
"Why?""
"We have recovered evidence concerning the forged authorization.""
Vanessa's heart began to race.
"Is Malcolm involved?""
"Yes.""
"Will I be arrested?""
"No. At this stage, you're being treated as a potential witness and a victim of identity misuse. We need to document your account.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"All right.""
"There's one more thing.""
"What?""
"We've recovered an audio recording.""
"Of Malcolm?""
"Yes.""
Vanessa gripped the phone.
"What does it say?""
Eleanor paused.
"It establishes that your signature was used deliberately without your knowledge.""
Vanessa exhaled.
"Thank God.""
"But there's another issue. Malcolm appears to have discussed using your identity to redirect the blame toward you.""
Vanessa went cold.
"When?""
"Six years ago.""
She sat down.
"Why would he do that?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
At five that evening, Vanessa entered the Helix legal office.
Eleanor greeted her and offered her a seat.
Andre was not present.
Vanessa was relieved.
She wasn't ready to face him again.
Eleanor placed several documents on the table.
"Please review these carefully.""
Vanessa read the first page.
Then the second.
Then she stopped.
"What's this?""
Eleanor leaned forward.
"A communication between Malcolm Hayes and Peter Lawson.""
Vanessa read the message.
*Malcolm: If the transfer is questioned, use Vanessa's authorization. She's already separated from Bennett. Nobody will believe she doesn't know about the money.*
Another message followed.
*Peter: What if she denies it?*
*Malcolm: Then we have the original signature from the loan agreement. Make the new document match as closely as possible.*
Vanessa covered her mouth.
She remembered signing that original loan agreement.
She remembered trusting Malcolm when he had first introduced himself as a consultant who knew people in the technology industry.
Had he approached her because of Andre?
Had their entire relationship been built around access to the company?
She looked at Eleanor.
"Did Malcolm know who I was before we met?""
Eleanor paused.
"We're still investigating.""
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"I need to know.""
"Why?""
"Because I think he knew exactly who I was.""
That night, Vanessa returned home and began packing.
She placed her clothes into suitcases.
She removed the diamond necklace from her jewelry box.
Then she found a photograph of herself and Malcolm at a charity event three years earlier.
He was smiling.
His arm was around her waist.
On the back, someone had written:
To my beautiful Vanessa. The best thing that ever happened to me.
She stared at the words.
Then she remembered the first time he had approached her.
A charity dinner.
A conversation about her former marriage.
His unusual interest in Andre's business.
At the time, she had thought he was simply being kind.
Now every memory looked different.
She picked up her phone and called an old friend, Claire.
"Claire, I need to ask you something.""
"Of course. What's wrong?""
"Do you remember when I first met Malcolm?""
"Yes. At the charity dinner.""
"Did he know I was Andre Bennett's ex-wife?""
Claire hesitated.
"Vanessa, I thought you knew.""
"Knew what?""
"Malcolm had been asking people about you for weeks before that event.""
Vanessa stopped packing.
"What?""
Claire lowered her voice.
"He asked whether you were still in contact with Andre. He asked whether you had kept any documents from the company.""
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I thought he was interested in you.""
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
"Was he?""
Claire was silent.
Then she answered.
"I don't think so.""
Vanessa ended the call.
She stood in the middle of the bedroom, surrounded by expensive belongings.
For the first time, she wondered whether Malcolm had ever loved her at all.
Then her phone rang.
An unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke.
"Ms. Cole? My name is Peter Lawson.""
Vanessa's stomach tightened.
"What do you want?""
"I need to warn you.""
"About what?""
"Malcolm is looking for the original recording.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't understand. He believes Daniel has another copy.""
Vanessa gripped the phone.
"Does he?""
Peter hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"At a storage facility in Illinois.""
"Why are you telling me?""
The man's voice dropped.
"Because there's something on that recording that Daniel hasn't told Andre.""
"What?""
Peter took a breath.
"Malcolm didn't choose you by accident, Ms. Cole.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Peter continued.
"He approached you because he believed you had access to something Andre would never suspect was missing.""
"What was it?""
"An original patent assignment.""
Vanessa's heart began pounding.
May you like
Peter spoke again.
"And if Malcolm finds it before Andre does, the entire company could lose its most valuable technology.""
