Chapter 7: Rachel's Last Warning
I read the letter three times.
Then I handed the phone to Michael.
Rachel's handwriting was unmistakable.
Dear Ethan,
You don't know me, and I understand that my name may be unfamiliar to you.
But I know who you are.
I learned about you while reviewing the financial records connected to the family trust.
Your mother has been telling people that your future depends on money that belongs to Nia and Malik.
That is not true.
You deserve an education. You deserve a home. You deserve a future.
But those things cannot be built by taking away another child's security.
I stopped reading.
My throat felt tight.
Michael continued silently.
The letter went on.
Rachel explained that she'd discovered unexplained transfers from the trust months before her death.
She had contacted Hartwell Family Services and requested an independent audit.
She had also learned that Vanessa was using her relationship with me to gain access to financial information.
The most disturbing paragraph came near the end.
Ethan, if you are reading this, I want you to understand something.
I don't blame you for what your mother has done.
You were a child when these decisions began.
But if you are old enough to receive money taken from Nia, you are old enough to ask where it came from.
Please don't allow yourself to become another person who hurts her.
Rachel.
I lowered the phone.
"Why would Rachel write to a boy she never met?""
Michael looked thoughtful.
"Because she probably knew Vanessa was using him as justification for the transfers.""
I shook my head.
"She could have told me.""
"Perhaps she intended to. But she may have wanted to verify the financial records first.""
I stared at the photograph.
Rachel had been protecting Nia long before I realized she needed protection.
I called Ethan.
He answered immediately.
"Did you read it?""
"Yes.""
"Is it real?""
"Yes. That's my late wife's handwriting.""
He was quiet.
Then he said, "I'm sorry.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you know your mother was transferring money from the trust?""
"No.""
"Did you know she was planning to use it for your education?""
"I thought she was paying for everything herself.""
I sat down.
"How long have you known about the account?""
"About a year.""
"And you never asked where the money came from?""
"She said it was money she had saved.""
I took a breath.
"Ethan, I don't know you. But I need you to understand that my daughter was going without food while you were receiving payments from her inheritance.""
His voice cracked.
"I didn't know.""
"Then help us establish what happened.""
"I will.""
Before ending the call, I asked him to preserve every document and message he had.
Michael contacted the investigator.
We arranged to collect copies of the material through the proper legal process.
That afternoon, Claire came over.
She sat with Nia in the living room, looking through old photographs of Rachel.
Nia held a picture of her mother standing beside a Christmas tree.
"Did Mommy like Christmas?"" she asked.
Claire smiled.
"She loved it.""
"Did she like decorating?""
"She was terrible at it.""
Nia giggled.
"Really?""
"She once put the Christmas star upside down and insisted it was modern art.""
For a moment, the room filled with laughter.
Then Nia traced her mother's face.
"I wish I remembered more.""
Claire put an arm around her.
"Your mother loved you more than anything.""
Nia looked down.
"Did she know Vanessa was going to be mean?""
Claire's smile faded.
"She worried about the possibility that someone might not treat you fairly. That's why she made sure you had people looking out for you.""
Nia nodded.
Then she asked quietly:
"Was I bad?""
Claire pulled her closer.
"No, sweetheart. Never.""
I stood in the doorway, listening.
I wanted to go back in time.
I wanted to hear every warning Rachel had given me.
I wanted to recognize the signs before my daughter learned to fear her own kitchen.
But time doesn't move backward.
It only gives you another chance to make a better decision.
That evening, Malik came downstairs holding his phone.
"Dad?""
"What's up?""
"Someone posted about us.""
He showed me a social media post.
Vanessa had uploaded a photograph of herself sitting on a sofa.
Her eyes were red.
The caption read:
Sometimes being a stepmother means loving children who will never accept you. I gave everything to a family that treated me like an outsider. Now I'm being punished for trying to discipline a spoiled child.
The comments were already filling.
Some people called her brave.
Others said stepmothers were never appreciated.
A woman wrote:
I know exactly what this feels like. Children can be cruel.
I felt sick.
She was telling strangers a carefully constructed version of the story.
Then I saw another post.
A photograph of Nia's birthday papers.
Vanessa had cropped the image so the trust documents were visible.
The caption read:
Imagine giving a child everything and still being accused of abuse.
I immediately contacted Michael.
He told me to preserve the posts and avoid responding publicly.
But the damage was already happening.
A relative called.
Then another.
My aunt left a voicemail asking why I'd thrown Vanessa out.
A family friend sent me a message saying I needed to stop letting my children manipulate me.
I didn't answer.
Instead, I sat down with Malik.
"How are you feeling?""
He shrugged.
"People think Mom is telling the truth.""
"Some people do.""
"What if they never believe us?""
I looked at him.
"Then we'll keep telling the truth to the people who need to hear it.""
He nodded.
Then he looked at his phone.
"There's something else.""
"What?""
He opened a message from Vanessa.
It had been sent privately.
You can come home whenever you want. Your father is making you choose sides. Don't let him destroy this family.
Malik shook his head.
"She keeps saying that.""
I took the phone.
"Have you answered?""
"No.""
"Good. You don't have to.""
He hesitated.
"Can I block her?""
"Let's speak with Michael first about preserving the messages. But you don't need to engage with her.""
Later that night, I received a call from Ethan.
"Mr. Carter, I found something else.""
"What?""
"An email chain between my mother and Robert.""
"What's in it?""
He sent several screenshots.
The first email was from Robert.
The guardianship petition is ready. We only need the school records and medical statements.
The second was from Vanessa.
I can obtain the school records. Mrs. Collins has been cooperative.
My stomach tightened.
The third email made my blood run cold.
Once Daniel's capacity is questioned, the court can appoint a temporary administrator. The trust can then be reorganized without his interference.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at the date.
It had been sent six weeks earlier.
Before the dinner.
Before I hired the investigator.
Before I even suspected what was happening.
I called Michael.
He answered immediately.
"Daniel?""
"I have the emails.""
"Send them.""
I forwarded the screenshots.
A minute later, he called back.
"This is serious.""
"Can she actually take the children?""
"Not simply because she asks. But we need to respond to the filing, challenge any false statements, and protect the children's interests.""
"What about Mrs. Collins?""
"We'll speak with her through the appropriate process.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Nia was sleeping.
Malik was reading beside her.
I lowered my voice.
"Michael, I want this stopped.""
"We're working on it.""
The following morning, Vanessa's attorney contacted Michael.
She was requesting a temporary hearing concerning the children's residence and financial management.
The hearing was scheduled for the following week.
I thought that would be the worst news of the day.
Then Michael received a message from the school.
Mrs. Collins had been asked to provide a statement supporting Vanessa's claim that Nia was emotionally unstable.
May you like
And apparently, someone had already prepared a statement in her name.
A statement she hadn't written.
