Chapter 1: Those Are Mine
"Those are mine.""
Vanessa's voice cut through the dining room like a knife.
My ten-year-old daughter, Nia, slowly pulled her hand away from the enormous tray of crab legs sitting in the middle of our dining table.
"But there's plenty," she whispered.
Vanessa leaned forward, her diamond bracelet sliding down her wrist.
"I said no, Nia. Don't make me repeat myself.""
I stood in the doorway, still holding my car keys.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The dining table looked like something from an expensive seafood restaurant. Crab legs, lobster tails, garlic butter shrimp, corn on the cob, potatoes, and bowls of melted butter covered nearly every inch of its surface.
There was enough food to feed twelve people.
Yet my daughter was sitting in front of a nearly empty plate.
My wife had a mountain of food arranged in front of her.
And my fourteen-year-old son, Malik, was staring down at his fork as if looking up might get him into trouble.
I'd come home two hours earlier than expected.
My business meeting had been canceled, and I'd decided to surprise the children by bringing home their favorite chocolate cake.
Instead, I'd walked into something that made my stomach turn.
"Nia?""
My daughter looked up.
The moment she saw me, her expression changed.
But she didn't smile.
She didn't run toward me.
She looked frightened.
That frightened me more than anything else.
Vanessa turned around.
Her face went pale for half a second before she forced a smile.
"Daniel! You're home early.""
I placed my keys on the hallway table.
"Apparently.""
She stood and hurriedly adjusted her blouse.
"I was just serving dinner.""
I looked at the food.
Then at Nia.
"Is that what you're doing?""
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Don't start. The children have already eaten.""
I walked closer to the table.
Nia's plate contained two small pieces of corn and what looked like a spoonful of mashed potatoes.
There wasn't even enough food for a child half her age.
"Did you tell Nia she couldn't eat the seafood?""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"She already had enough.""
"Enough of what?""
"Daniel, please. Don't turn dinner into a courtroom.""
I pulled out a chair and sat beside my daughter.
"Nia, sweetheart, are you hungry?""
She glanced at Vanessa.
That tiny movement made something inside me crack.
"Look at me, baby.""
Nia slowly raised her eyes.
"Yes, Daddy.""
"Have you eaten?""
She hesitated.
Vanessa interrupted.
"She's being dramatic. She had snacks earlier.""
I ignored my wife.
"Nia, I'm asking you.""
My daughter swallowed.
"No, Daddy.""
The room became painfully quiet.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"That's not true. She's had plenty today.""
I looked at my wife.
"Then why is her plate empty?""
"Because she refuses to eat properly. I'm trying to teach her discipline.""
I stared at the seafood.
"By keeping her from eating?""
"By teaching her that she can't have everything she wants.""
Nia lowered her head.
I turned toward my son.
"Malik.""
My fourteen-year-old son had barely moved since I'd entered the room.
He was gripping his fork so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
"Yes, Dad?""
"Tell me what's happening.""
Vanessa gave him a sharp look.
"Malik, your father just got home. He doesn't need to hear childish complaints.""
I watched my son's face.
He looked at his mother.
Then at his sister.
Then back at me.
"Tell me the truth, son.""
Malik took a shaky breath.
"No, Dad.""
I frowned.
"No, what?""
"No, she doesn't let Nia eat.""
Vanessa's chair scraped against the floor.
"Malik!""
But my son continued.
"Not when you're gone.""
My heart began pounding.
"What do you mean?""
Malik put his fork down.
"When you leave for work, Mom makes Nia eat whatever is left. Sometimes there's nothing left.""
Vanessa stood up.
"That is a disgusting lie!""
Malik flinched.
I noticed.
I noticed how quickly his shoulders tightened whenever she raised her voice.
I noticed how Nia immediately stopped moving.
And I noticed that both my children seemed more afraid of their mother than they were comfortable admitting.
"Malik," I said quietly.
"Keep talking.""
My son looked at me.
"Sometimes Mom makes a special dinner just for herself. She orders expensive food and tells Nia she's not allowed to touch it.""
Vanessa slammed her palm against the table.
"Enough!""
A glass of water tipped over.
Nia jumped.
I stood.
"Don't you dare shout at him.""
Vanessa stared at me.
"You're taking their side against me?""
"I'm taking the side of my hungry ten-year-old daughter.""
"She's not hungry!""
Nia's stomach made a small, unmistakable sound.
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa looked away.
I pulled out my jacket and reached inside.
The white-and-blue envelope was still there.
I'd been carrying it all day.
I had planned to give it to Nia after dinner, when the four of us were together.
It contained something she'd been asking me about for months.
Something I'd worked hard to arrange.
I placed it gently in her hands.
"Here, sweetheart. This is for you.""
Nia looked confused.
"What is it, Daddy?""
"Open it.""
Her little fingers struggled with the sealed flap.
When she finally pulled out the papers, her eyes widened.
She looked at the first page.
Then at me.
"Daddy...""
Her voice was barely audible.
I smiled.
"Happy early birthday, princess.""
A tiny smile appeared on her face.
It was the first genuine smile I'd seen all evening.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"What did you give her?""
I didn't answer.
Instead, I reached into my jacket again.
This time, I pulled out a second document.
It was a printed copy of a report from a private family investigator I'd hired three weeks earlier.
I placed it directly in front of Vanessa.
Her eyes dropped to the paper.
She read the heading.
Then she read the first paragraph.
All the color disappeared from her face.
"Daniel...""
Her voice cracked.
I pulled out the chair beside Malik and sat down.
"Now we're going to talk about what you've been doing when I'm gone.""
Vanessa stared at the document.
Then she whispered something that made Malik drop his fork.
"You said you destroyed those recordings.""
I froze.
Recordings?
I hadn't mentioned any recordings.
I looked at my son.
His face had gone completely white.
"Malik," I asked slowly.
"What recordings?""
Vanessa immediately reached for the paper.
I pulled it away.
"Don't touch that.""
She looked between me and Malik.
For the first time since I'd known her, my wife appeared genuinely terrified.
And I suddenly realized the seafood dinner wasn't the worst thing happening in my house.
It was only the first thing I'd discovered.
The envelope I'd given Nia contained the deed to a small house I'd purchased for her future, along with documents establishing an education trust in her name.
It was something I'd wanted to do ever since she told me she dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.
The second envelope was something entirely different.
Three weeks earlier, I'd received a call from Nia's school.
Her teacher, Mrs. Collins, had noticed that my daughter was frequently falling asleep in class.
She had also noticed that Nia was unusually reluctant to accept food from other children.
When offered a sandwich during lunch, she'd asked whether she was allowed to take it home.
That question had troubled her teacher enough to contact me.
At first, I thought there had been a misunderstanding.
Vanessa had always presented herself as a devoted stepmother.
She had married me when Nia was six, two years after my first wife, Rachel, died.
Vanessa had told everyone that she loved both children equally.
She bought Malik expensive sneakers.
She posted photographs of family vacations.
She called Nia her little princess whenever other people were around.
I'd believed her.
But Mrs. Collins told me something I couldn't ignore.
"Nia seems afraid of getting into trouble for eating," she'd said.
I asked her to explain.
"Last Friday, I gave her a sandwich. She wrapped half of it in a napkin and put it inside her backpack.""
"Why?""
"She told me she wanted to save it for later. When I asked whether she'd had breakfast, she said she wasn't allowed to eat breakfast unless Vanessa approved it.""
I'd spent the next three weeks quietly investigating.
The report on our table contained photographs, dates, receipts, and statements from people who had seen Vanessa's behavior.
But it didn't contain everything.
That was why I needed to know about the recordings.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Answer me.""
She shook her head.
"You're misunderstanding everything.""
"Then explain it.""
"Malik has been recording private conversations. That's illegal. He's been trying to make me look bad.""
I turned toward my son.
"Is that true?""
Malik's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes, Dad.""
Vanessa threw her hands up.
"See? He's been spying on me!""
"Why?"" I asked.
Malik's voice trembled.
"Because nobody believed me the first time.""
The words landed harder than any accusation.
I reached for his hand.
"What happened the first time?""
He looked at his mother.
Then he looked at me.
"She made Nia throw away her birthday dinner.""
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"That was months ago.""
My son continued.
"Grandma sent her a birthday cake. Mom said Nia didn't deserve it because she had been disrespectful. She threw the cake in the trash.""
Nia began crying silently.
I turned toward her.
"Baby, did that happen?""
She nodded.
Vanessa sighed impatiently.
"It was a parenting decision. You can't expect children to eat cake whenever they want.""
I looked at the untouched seafood.
Then at the little girl sitting beside me.
"She's ten years old, Vanessa.""
"And I'm the one raising her while you're busy making money!""
I stood.
"You will not use my absence as an excuse to mistreat my children.""
Vanessa pointed at the door.
"Get out of my face.""
I almost laughed.
This was my house.
My children.
And my wife was behaving as if I were the intruder.
I turned to Malik.
"Take your sister upstairs. Pack a small bag for both of you.""
Vanessa stepped between us.
"Absolutely not.""
"Move.""
"You cannot take my children away!""
"They are not your property.""
Her eyes narrowed.
Then she looked at Nia and said something that made my daughter drop the birthday papers.
"Tell your father what you did with the money, Nia.""
I turned slowly.
"What money?""
Nia started shaking.
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
"Go ahead, sweetheart. Tell him where your mother's money went.""
And suddenly, I understood that the recordings were only part of the story.
There was something else Vanessa had been hiding.
May you like
Something involving Rachel.
And my daughter.
