Chapter 6: The Son She Never Told Me About
"Rachel knew Vanessa had a son?""
I repeated the question because my mind refused to accept it.
Michael was still on the phone.
"Yes. His name is Ethan Carter. He's twenty-one years old.""
I gripped the edge of my desk.
"Twenty-one?""
"According to the records, he was born before Vanessa met you. The trust documents show that Vanessa attempted to designate him as a secondary beneficiary using funds originally intended for Nia and Malik.""
I stared at the dark window.
"Why would Rachel know about him?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
I lowered my voice.
"Does Vanessa know we've found this?""
"I don't know. But Daniel, there's another issue. Rachel's handwritten instruction specifically prohibits transfers to Ethan unless both children's interests are fully protected and the arrangement is independently approved.""
"Then why did the bank allow it?""
"That's what the investigation will determine.""
I ended the call and sat in silence.
Twenty-one years.
Vanessa had a grown son.
A son she'd never mentioned during six years of marriage.
I had asked her about her family. I'd asked about her childhood, her parents, her relatives, and her past relationships.
She'd always told me she had no children.
I'd never questioned it.
The following morning, I asked Michael to arrange a meeting with the bank's trust department.
Before leaving, I went downstairs.
Nia was sitting at the kitchen counter eating pancakes.
Malik was pouring orange juice.
"Morning, Dad," Malik said.
"Morning, buddy.""
Nia looked up.
"Can we have pancakes again tomorrow?""
I smiled.
"If that's what you want.""
She took another bite.
"Can I have three?""
"Absolutely.""
Malik laughed.
"She's going to make you cook every morning.""
I shrugged.
"Then I guess I'll learn to make better pancakes.""
For a moment, the house felt normal.
Then Malik lowered his voice.
"Dad, can I ask you something?""
"Anything.""
"Is Mom coming back?""
I pulled out the chair beside him.
"Your mother and I have some things to work out. But you and Nia are staying with me.""
He nodded.
"Does that mean she's going to be angry?""
"She might be. But her feelings aren't your responsibility.""
Nia looked up.
"Did I do something bad?""
I immediately turned toward her.
"No, sweetheart.""
"Then why is everyone fighting?""
I reached across the counter and held her hand.
"Sometimes adults make decisions that hurt other people. When that happens, we have to make things right.""
She looked down at her pancakes.
"Okay.""
I kissed the top of her head.
"Finish breakfast. We're going to have a good day.""
At eleven, Michael and I met with the bank's trust officer, a woman named Patricia Reynolds.
She had already gathered the relevant documents.
"Mr. Carter," she said, "we've identified several irregularities in the account.""
She placed a folder in front of me.
"The original trust established by your late wife named Nia and Malik as equal beneficiaries. It also appointed you as the primary trustee.""
I nodded.
"I remember.""
"However, fourteen months ago, an amendment was submitted.""
She showed me a copy.
The amendment created a separate educational account for Ethan Carter.
It listed Vanessa as the person authorized to manage the account.
"Who approved this?"" I asked.
Patricia checked the signature page.
"The amendment was processed through Hartwell Family Services. Your signature appears on the authorization.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Was the signature independently verified?""
"At the time, no.""
"Why not?""
Patricia looked uncomfortable.
"The documents were submitted by a registered financial representative.""
"Robert Hayes?""
She nodded.
I rubbed my forehead.
"So Robert and Vanessa moved my children's money into a trust for her son.""
"That's what the preliminary records suggest.""
Michael opened another folder.
"We need the transaction history, original submission records, and all communications between Hartwell and the bank.""
Patricia nodded.
"We've already placed a restriction on further transfers pending review.""
I looked at her.
"Can the money be recovered?""
"We've identified approximately forty-two thousand dollars remaining in the secondary account. The rest appears to have been distributed.""
"Distributed to whom?""
She turned another page.
"Some funds went toward tuition deposits, housing expenses, and a vehicle purchase.""
I stared at the numbers.
"What vehicle?""
"A luxury SUV.""
I almost laughed.
My daughter had been hiding crackers in her bedroom while her stepmother used her inheritance to buy a luxury vehicle for a grown son.
Michael closed the folder.
"We'll pursue recovery through the appropriate legal channels.""
Patricia nodded.
Then she hesitated.
"There's something else you should know.""
"What?""
She turned her laptop toward us.
A recent email from Vanessa had been sent to the bank.
The subject line read:
*Urgent request concerning beneficiary dispute.*
The message stated that I was experiencing emotional instability following the death of my first wife and was no longer capable of managing the children's financial affairs.
I read it twice.
"She sent this?""
Patricia nodded.
"She requested that the bank temporarily recognize her as the children's primary financial representative.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"On what legal basis?""
"She attached a preliminary guardianship application.""
I looked at him.
"She actually filed something?""
"We'll obtain the complete filing.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
You should stop digging into my mother's life.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
You don't know what happened before you came along.
I showed Michael.
He took a photograph.
"That could be Ethan.""
I typed one response.
Who is this?
Three dots appeared.
Then:
Her son.
I stared at the message.
Before I could respond, another arrived.
She told me you stole everything that belonged to our family.
My jaw tightened.
I typed:
Your mother stole money from two children.
No response.
A minute later, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A young man's voice came through.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Yes.""
"This is Ethan.""
I looked at Michael.
"Go ahead.""
Ethan sounded nervous.
"I think we need to talk.""
"About what?""
"My mother.""
I leaned back.
"Then tell me why she used my children's inheritance to fund your account.""
There was a long silence.
"I didn't know where the money came from.""
"You're twenty-one years old. You received tuition payments and a vehicle.""
"I thought it was her money.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you know she was telling people that my daughter was stealing from the trust?""
"What?""
"Did you know she was planning to remove Nia from my home?""
Ethan didn't answer.
Then he said something unexpected.
"She told me Nia wasn't safe with you.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Why?""
"She said you were unstable. She said you were obsessed with your first wife and that Nia was becoming difficult.""
I looked at Michael.
He was listening carefully.
I lowered my voice.
"Where is your mother now?""
"At my apartment.""
"Does she know you're calling me?""
"No.""
"Why are you calling?""
Ethan exhaled.
"Because I found something in her suitcase.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"A folder with my name on it. There are documents about the trust. But there's also a letter from someone named Rachel.""
I stood.
"Rachel?""
"Your first wife.""
My heartbeat quickened.
"Read me the letter.""
"I can't. I don't know what it means.""
"Then send me a photograph.""
He hesitated.
"There's one problem.""
"What?""
"My mother is coming back.""
The call ended.
Michael stared at me.
"Daniel, we need that letter.""
I nodded.
But before I could say anything, another message appeared.
It was a photograph.
A handwritten letter.
Rachel's signature was at the bottom.
And the first sentence read:
Dear Ethan, if Vanessa has told you that Nia is the reason your future is uncertain, you need to know the truth about what your mother did.
I enlarged the photograph.
May you like
Then I read the next line.
And suddenly, I understood why Rachel had been so determined to protect my daughter.
