Chapter 4: The Woman Rachel Trusted
Rachel's sister, Claire, answered my call on the fifth ring.
"Daniel?""
Her voice sounded surprised.
"Claire, I need to ask you something.""
There was a pause.
"Is Nia okay?""
The question caught me off guard.
"Why wouldn't she be?""
Claire exhaled.
"Because I've been trying to reach her for months.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What do you mean?""
"Vanessa stopped answering my calls. She told me Nia was busy, that she didn't want to see me, that I was making things difficult for the family.""
I closed my eyes.
"Claire, I need you to come over.""
"Is something wrong?""
"Yes.""
She was silent for a moment.
Then she said, "I'll be there in an hour.""
I hung up.
Michael was sitting at the dining table with the red notebook.
He'd already contacted the bank's fraud department and requested that the trust account be temporarily restricted against further unauthorized transfers.
"Claire may know something about Rachel's arrangements," I said.
Michael looked up.
"Then we should speak with her.""
Before Claire arrived, I checked on the children.
Nia was in the living room drawing a picture of a dog.
Malik was helping her color.
I sat beside them.
"What are you drawing, sweetheart?""
"A puppy.""
"What's his name?""
"Peanut.""
"Why Peanut?""
She shrugged.
"Because he's small and cute.""
Malik smiled.
"She wants a golden retriever.""
I laughed softly.
"Then we'll have to discuss Peanut's future.""
Nia looked up.
"Can I still be a veterinarian?""
I put my arm around her.
"Absolutely.""
Even as I said it, I felt ashamed that she had needed to ask.
A few minutes later, the doorbell rang.
Claire stood on the porch wearing jeans, a gray sweater, and an expression that made me think she'd been carrying something heavy for a long time.
She looked past me.
"Where's Nia?""
"Inside.""
She stepped into the house.
The moment Nia saw her, she stood.
"Aunt Claire?""
Claire dropped her handbag.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
She crossed the room and hugged her.
Nia held on tightly.
Claire looked at her face.
Then at her clothes.
Then at the small plastic bag of crackers on the coffee table.
Her eyes filled.
"What happened?""
I invited her into the kitchen.
Michael introduced himself and explained that he was helping me review some financial and family matters.
I showed Claire the email from Vanessa.
She read it slowly.
Then she sat down.
"She actually did it.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
Claire covered her mouth.
"Rachel warned me.""
I pulled out a chair.
"Tell me everything.""
Claire stared at the table.
"Six months before Rachel died, she called me. She was worried about the children.""
"Why?""
"She'd noticed Vanessa was asking questions about the trust. At the time, Vanessa wasn't married to you yet, but she was already involved in your life.""
I frowned.
"Rachel knew Vanessa?""
"Not personally. She knew about her through you.""
I remembered telling Rachel that I'd started seeing someone.
Rachel had been polite.
She'd wished me happiness.
But she'd also asked me to be careful about the children.
"What did Rachel tell you?""
Claire reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I've kept this for years.""
Inside was a letter written in Rachel's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My throat tightened.
Claire unfolded the paper.
"She asked me to hold this until I believed Nia needed it.""
I looked at the date.
It had been written four months before Rachel died.
Claire began reading.
Dear Claire,
If you're reading this, something may have happened that I couldn't prevent.
I don't want you to distrust everyone who enters Daniel's life. He deserves happiness, and so do the children.
But I need you to remember something.
Nia has always been sensitive. She notices when people are unhappy. She tries to make everyone feel better, even when she's the one who needs comfort.
Please don't let anyone use that kindness against her.
Claire paused.
Her voice shook.
She continued.
I've made arrangements for Nia's education and future. Daniel knows about the trust, but there are certain documents I haven't given him yet because I don't want him making decisions based on fear.
If anyone ever tries to separate Nia from her brother, or convince her that she has no right to the money I've left for her, please help her.
I trust you.
Love, Rachel.
I stared at the letter.
"Why didn't you give me this before?""
Claire looked at me.
"Because nothing happened at first. Vanessa seemed wonderful. She treated the children well when I visited.""
"Then what changed?""
Claire looked toward the living room.
"Nia called me one night.""
My chest tightened.
"When?""
"About eight months ago.""
"What did she say?""
Claire swallowed.
"She asked if she could come and stay with me.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried. Vanessa answered the phone and told me Nia had been having nightmares. She said you were dealing with work stress and didn't need another problem.""
I stood.
"Why didn't you call me directly?""
"I did. She intercepted two calls. After that, she told me you didn't want me contacting the family anymore.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Did you keep records of those calls?""
Claire nodded.
"I have messages.""
She opened her phone and showed us.
There were several messages from Vanessa.
The first read:
Claire, please stop confusing Nia. She needs stability.
Another said:
Your sister is gone. You need to stop trying to control a family that isn't yours.
The last one was sent three months earlier.
If you continue interfering, Daniel will learn things about Rachel that he may not appreciate.
I looked at Claire.
"What things?""
She lowered her eyes.
"Rachel had discovered something about the company that managed her trust.""
Michael immediately leaned forward.
"Which company?""
"Hartwell Family Services.""
The same name from the red notebook.
I felt a chill run down my back.
Claire continued.
"Rachel thought someone was charging fees to the children's account that weren't authorized. She was preparing to challenge them.""
"Did she tell you who was responsible?""
Claire shook her head.
"She didn't know for sure. But she told me she had evidence.""
Michael wrote something down.
"Do you know where that evidence is?""
Claire looked at me.
"Yes.""
I leaned forward.
"Where?""
"In the storage unit Rachel rented before she died.""
I stared at her.
"There's a storage unit?""
Claire nodded.
"She gave me the key.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she asked me not to open it unless there was a serious problem involving Nia.""
I looked at the letter again.
Rachel had known something was wrong.
She had prepared for a possibility none of us had wanted to imagine.
Michael stood.
"We should retrieve the contents with a proper inventory. If there are original financial records, they'll be important.""
Claire agreed.
But before we could leave, Malik appeared in the doorway.
"Dad?""
I turned.
"What's wrong?""
He held his phone.
"Mom just texted me.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did she say?""
He handed me the phone.
The message read:
Tell your father to stop involving Aunt Claire. He doesn't know what she's capable of.
A second message appeared while I was reading.
And Malik, don't forget what happened to the last person who tried to interfere with this family.
I looked at my son.
"What does she mean?""
Malik's face had gone pale.
"I don't know.""
Claire stood abruptly.
"She's threatening him now?""
Michael took the phone and photographed the messages.
"Don't respond.""
I looked at Claire.
"Let's get that storage unit.""
We drove to the facility that afternoon.
It was a quiet building on the edge of town, with rows of metal doors and security cameras mounted along the ceiling.
Claire used the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside were several cardboard boxes, a small filing cabinet, and a plastic container covered with a blue blanket.
The smell of dust and old paper filled the air.
I picked up the first box.
It contained photographs of Rachel and the children.
The second held school certificates, medical records, and old family documents.
The third contained financial statements.
Michael carefully examined each folder.
Then Claire pointed toward the filing cabinet.
"She told me the important things were in there.""
I opened the top drawer.
Inside were three sealed envelopes.
One had my name.
One had Claire's.
And the third had Nia's.
My hands trembled as I picked up the envelope with my name.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Rachel's.
I opened it.
There was a short letter and a printed document.
The letter read:
Daniel,
If you're reading this, I hope it means you finally found the truth.
Please don't blame yourself for what you couldn't see.
I need you to check the last page of the attached document. It explains who has been trying to control the children's trust.
I turned to the document.
It was a copy of a corporate ownership filing.
At the bottom was a name.
I read it once.
Then again.
Michael leaned over my shoulder.
His expression changed.
"Daniel...""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He pointed to the name.
*Vanessa Carter.*
But that wasn't the part that frightened me.
Below her name was another entry.
A second director.
Someone I'd known for years.
Someone who had attended my wedding.
Someone who had stood beside me at Rachel's funeral.
And someone who had access to every financial record in my company.
May you like
My accountant.
Robert Hayes.
