Chapter 9: The Trap Ethan Never Saw Coming
The new account changed everything.
Until that moment, I had believed Ethan's scheme was something that had already happened.
A collection of forged documents, stolen money, and fraudulent applications.
But the account opened that morning proved he was still operating.
He was still using Malik's information.
Still moving money.
Still trying to gain control of our lives.
I called the bank immediately.
This time, I demanded a fraud investigation and requested that every suspicious account connected to Malik's information be flagged.
The representative confirmed that the application had been submitted using the same email address associated with the previous fraudulent account.
Maya's email.
I looked at her.
"Did you open another account?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
Malik stared at her.
"Then Ethan still has your login.""
Maya covered her mouth.
"He told me he needed access.""
"Access to what?""
"An old account.""
I looked at her.
"Which account?""
She hesitated.
Then she said:
"The one he created for me.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Do you still have the password?""
Maya nodded.
"On my laptop.""
I told her not to open anything until the investigators advised us.
Then I called the attorney.
He arranged for a digital-forensics specialist to examine the available devices and preserve the evidence.
By noon, we had another appointment with the police.
They took copies of the messages, financial documents, and the recordings from Nia's camera.
An investigator named Detective Harris sat across from us.
He was in his late forties, with a calm voice and a habit of studying people before speaking.
"Mr. Bennett, I need to understand the relationship between your family and Ethan Cole.""
I explained everything.
The loan.
The forged documents.
The threats.
The recording device.
The fraudulent accounts.
When I finished, Detective Harris leaned back.
"This appears more organized than a simple personal dispute.""
"Meaning?""
"We've seen similar schemes involving identity theft and property fraud.""
Maya looked up.
"Similar?""
He nodded.
"People gain access to personal information, create fraudulent financial accounts, and use emotional pressure to keep victims quiet.""
Claire began crying.
Detective Harris continued.
"Sometimes they target one family member first, then expand the scheme to others.""
I thought about the missing jewelry.
The stolen cash.
The college account.
The house.
"Do you think Ethan has done this before?""
"We're investigating.""
He turned toward Maya.
"Has Ethan ever mentioned other people?""
She hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
"His friends.""
"Names?""
She gave him two.
Then she mentioned a woman who had helped Ethan with paperwork.
Detective Harris wrote everything down.
"Did he ever ask you to meet anyone?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"At a storage unit.""
I frowned.
"What?""
Maya looked embarrassed.
"He said he needed somewhere to keep documents.""
"Did you go there?""
She nodded.
"Twice.""
"Did you see anything unusual?""
She swallowed.
"Boxes. Computers. Lots of envelopes.""
Detective Harris looked up.
"Do you remember the location?""
Maya nodded.
She wrote down the address.
The detective studied it.
Then he stood.
"That's useful information.""
After the interview, the investigator explained that authorities would handle the next steps.
He also advised us not to confront Ethan or attempt to recover any documents ourselves.
I agreed.
But as we walked out, Maya stopped me.
"Marcus?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
She looked terrified.
"What if Ethan comes after us?""
I studied her face.
"Then we let the authorities handle him.""
"He said he could ruin us.""
I lowered my voice.
"He already tried.""
She started crying.
"I'm sorry.""
I didn't answer immediately.
I wanted to forgive her.
I wanted to believe the girl I'd once helped learn to drive was still somewhere beneath all the lies.
But I couldn't pretend that what she'd done was harmless.
"You need to understand something, Maya.""
She looked up.
"Your actions nearly destroyed your brother.""
"I know.""
"You let him stand in that living room while everyone believed the worst about him.""
"I know.""
"And you stayed silent.""
She lowered her head.
"I was scared.""
"So was he.""
She began sobbing.
I turned away.
For now, the most important thing was protecting my children and establishing the truth.
That evening, Nia brought me another discovery.
She had been reviewing the camera recordings from the past six months.
"Look at this.""
She showed me a clip from the day before Ethan first visited.
Claire was sitting at the dining table with a laptop.
Maya entered.
They spoke quietly.
Then Claire opened a folder and handed her several documents.
Maya looked at them.
"Are these all of Dad's papers?""
Claire nodded.
"Just copies.""
"What about Malik's?""
"His are included.""
Maya frowned.
"Why?""
Claire lowered her voice.
"Because Ethan needs to verify the accounts.""
I paused the video.
I looked at Nia.
"Your mother knew about the documents.""
Nia nodded.
"She wasn't just covering for Maya.""
The footage resumed.
Claire leaned closer to her daughter.
"Once this is finished, we'll finally have enough money to start over.""
Maya smiled.
"Will Marcus know?""
Claire shook her head.
"Not until everything is settled.""
I felt as if someone had struck me.
Start over.
That was the phrase Claire had used repeatedly during our marriage.
A fresh start.
A new family.
A new life.
I had believed she meant building something together.
Now I wondered whether she'd always intended to take what I had built.
I turned off the recording.
"Thank you, Nia.""
She sat beside me.
"Dad, there's something else.""
"What?""
"I checked the property records.""
My heart tightened.
"And?""
"There's a second application.""
I stared at her.
"Second?""
She nodded.
"This one was submitted two weeks before the first loan.""
I opened the document.
It was a request to change the property's ownership structure.
The application listed me as the original owner.
Claire as the authorized representative.
And a company called EC Holdings as the proposed recipient.
The initials made my stomach turn.
Ethan Cole.
I photographed the document and sent it to the attorney.
Then I called Detective Harris.
He asked me to forward the information immediately.
By 8:30 p.m., he called back.
"Mr. Bennett, we have a development.""
"What happened?""
"We located the storage unit Maya mentioned.""
I stood.
"And?""
"Officers executed a search warrant.""
My heart pounded.
"What did they find?""
"Documents, computers, financial records, and several devices.""
I closed my eyes.
"Was Ethan there?""
"No.""
"Did you find anything connected to my family?""
There was a pause.
"Yes.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
"Several copies of your personal documents. Your wife's financial records. Your son's identification information.""
I felt sick.
"Anything else?""
"Mr. Bennett, we found multiple property agreements involving other families.""
I gripped the phone.
"Other families?""
"At least six.""
I sat down.
Six families.
Six homes.
Six lives that might have been targeted the same way.
Then Detective Harris continued.
"We also found a printed document with your name on it.""
"What document?""
"A draft agreement dated three weeks ago.""
I swallowed.
"What does it say?""
He paused.
Then:
"It appears to be a proposed sale of your house.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who was the buyer?""
"Ethan Cole.""
I looked across the living room.
Claire was standing near the stairs.
She had heard enough to understand.
I ended the call.
Then I walked toward her.
"Did you know Ethan planned to sell my house?""
She began shaking.
"No.""
"Claire, look at me.""
She raised her eyes.
"Did you know?""
"No. I swear.""
I held up the document on my phone.
"Your name is on the paperwork.""
She started crying.
Then she whispered:
"I thought he was only trying to secure the loan.""
"Only?""
"He said he needed the property as collateral.""
I stepped back.
"Did you ever tell him he could sell it?""
"No.""
"Did you ever tell him he could transfer ownership?""
She shook her head.
Then she said something I never expected.
"I didn't know he was trying to take the house.""
I stared at her.
"Then why did you sign the documents?""
She covered her face.
"Because he told me if I didn't, he'd send the recording to you.""
"What recording?""
Claire slowly lowered her hands.
"The one he said would prove that I helped him.""
I frowned.
"Helped him do what?""
She looked at me.
And then she finally confessed.
"I didn't just sign the loan documents, Marcus.""
My chest tightened.
"What else did you do?""
She began crying.
"I transferred money from the household account.""
"How much?""
"Forty thousand.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where did it go?""
"To Ethan.""
"Why?""
"He said he needed it to release the other accounts.""
I stared at her.
"Other accounts?""
She nodded.
Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I found this in Maya's room.""
She handed it to me.
It was a printed message from Ethan.
Once the property transfer is completed, we'll have everything we need.
Beneath it was another sentence.
Then Marcus, Claire, and the kids will have nothing left to fight over.
I looked at my wife.
"Claire, I need you to tell me the truth.""
She nodded through her tears.
"About what?""
"Did Ethan ever threaten to hurt Malik?""
She hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Yes.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
"When?""
"Before the accusation.""
"What did he say?""
Claire looked toward the stairs.
"He told Maya that if Malik ever exposed the financial scheme, she needed to make sure nobody believed him.""
I couldn't breathe.
The accusation hadn't been an impulsive lie.
It had been part of the plan.
A deliberate attempt to silence my son.
And as I looked at the woman standing in front of me, I realized there was still one question I hadn't asked.
"Claire, did you know Maya was going to accuse Malik that afternoon?""
She closed her eyes.
May you like
Then nodded.
"Yes.""
