Chapter 3: The Missing Twenty-Eight Thousand Dollars
That night, nobody ate dinner.
The roast chicken I'd prepared sat untouched on the kitchen counter.
The house was quiet, but it wasn't peaceful.
It was the kind of silence that follows an explosion, when everyone is waiting to see what remains standing.
Malik locked himself in his bedroom.
Nia stayed downstairs with me.
Claire and Maya disappeared into the master bedroom.
At 9:17 p.m., I heard someone knock.
It was Nia.
She stood in the doorway holding a cup of tea.
"Can I come in?""
I moved aside.
"Of course.""
She placed the cup on my desk.
"Have you talked to Malik?""
"Not yet.""
"He's hurting, Dad.""
I looked at her.
"I know.""
"No, I don't think you do.""
Her voice trembled.
"He lost Mom. Then he spent years trying to accept Claire and Maya. He always tried to make things work.""
I sat down.
Nia continued.
"Do you remember when Maya broke his laptop?""
I nodded.
"She said it was an accident.""
"She spilled water on it," Nia said.
"Then she told everyone Malik had left it on the kitchen counter.""
I remembered.
I had bought him a replacement.
"What does that have to do with today?""
"Nothing by itself. But there were other things.""
She sat across from me.
"She took his headphones. She borrowed his car without asking. She used his credit card information to order clothes once.""
I frowned.
"Did he tell you?""
"He didn't want to cause problems.""
I stared at my daughter.
"Why didn't either of you tell me?""
"Because you were happy.""
Those three words hurt.
Nia looked down at her hands.
"You finally had someone again. You smiled more. You went on vacations. We didn't want to be the reason you started fighting with Claire.""
I felt ashamed.
I had believed that being a good father meant providing stability.
But perhaps I had confused keeping the peace with protecting my children.
"Did Claire know about these things?""
Nia nodded.
"Some of them.""
"And?""
"She always said Maya was adjusting.""
I leaned back.
"Jesus.""
Nia reached across the desk and held my hand.
"Dad, I need to tell you something else.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"The jewelry that disappeared from my room.""
"What about it?""
"I found the empty box in Maya's closet.""
My chest tightened.
"Did you tell Claire?""
"Yes.""
"What did she say?""
"She said Maya probably borrowed it and forgot to return it.""
I closed my eyes.
The necklace had belonged to Denise.
It was one of the few things I had given Nia from her mother's jewelry collection.
"Did you get it back?""
"No.""
Nia wiped her eyes.
"That's why I installed the camera.""
I sat quietly.
Then I reached for my phone and called Malik.
He answered after the second ring.
"Yeah, Dad?""
"Can you come downstairs?""
A pause.
"Why?""
"I want to talk.""
"Are you going to ask me again if I touched her?""
"No.""
Another pause.
"Okay.""
A minute later, Malik entered my office.
He looked exhausted.
His eyes were red, and he was wearing the same T-shirt he'd worn that afternoon.
He sat opposite me.
I didn't waste time.
"Tell me about the money.""
He rubbed his face.
"I got a notification from the account. The balance was lower than it should've been.""
"Did you speak to the bank?""
"Not directly. I emailed them. They said there had been a withdrawal.""
"Whose name was on it?""
"I didn't see the full details.""
"Do you have the email?""
He took out his phone.
A few seconds later, he showed me a message.
The withdrawal had been processed through an authorized account administrator.
I read the name.
Claire Bennett.
My jaw tightened.
"Why was Claire authorized?""
Malik shrugged.
"She said she was helping you organize the education accounts after you changed banks.""
I remembered that conversation.
Claire had offered to help with paperwork when I was traveling for work.
I had trusted her.
I had signed documents without examining every detail.
My stomach twisted.
"How much was withdrawn?""
"Twenty-eight thousand four hundred.""
"Did she tell you?""
"No.""
I stared at the email again.
"Do you have a bank statement?""
"Not yet.""
I nodded.
"Tomorrow we'll get everything.""
Malik leaned forward.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Do you believe me now?""
I looked directly into his eyes.
"I never wanted to believe you were capable of what she accused you of.""
He swallowed.
"But?""
"But I should have made it clearer that I wasn't going to abandon you while we figured things out.""
His lips tightened.
"I thought you were going to make me leave.""
I felt those words like a punch.
"I won't.""
He looked away.
"Claire wanted me out.""
"I know.""
"She said this was her house.""
I frowned.
"What?""
He nodded.
"She said that if Dad believes me, I'll regret it. She said she's going to make sure I don't stay here.""
I stood.
"She said that to you?""
"Last week.""
My stomach turned.
"What else?""
Malik hesitated.
Then he said something I wasn't expecting.
"She told me Maya was in trouble.""
"What kind of trouble?""
"She said Maya owed money to someone.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
"I don't know. I heard them arguing in the kitchen. Claire said she had already used some of her savings to cover it.""
I thought about the conversation on Nia's recording.
What about the money?
My mind began connecting pieces.
The missing jewelry.
The missing cash.
The withdrawal.
Maya's demand for Malik's phone.
I looked at my son.
"Did Maya ever ask you to help her with money?""
He nodded.
"Several times.""
"How much?""
"First, two hundred. Then five hundred. Last month, she asked for three thousand.""
"Why?""
"She said she needed to pay someone back.""
"Did you give it to her?""
"No.""
He looked down.
"She got angry. Said I was selfish.""
I sat back.
"Did she tell you who she owed?""
"No.""
A knock interrupted us.
Claire stood in the doorway.
She was wearing her dressing gown.
"Marcus, can I speak to you privately?""
I looked at Malik.
"Stay here.""
Claire's expression tightened.
"I said privately.""
"And I said he stays.""
She glanced at Malik.
Then she lowered her voice.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Then explain the withdrawal.""
She folded her arms.
"I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
"When the timing was right.""
"Twenty-eight thousand dollars, Claire. That's not a small amount.""
"I borrowed it.""
"From Malik's education account?""
"It was temporary.""
Malik stood.
"Did you ask me?""
Claire turned sharply.
"You're eighteen. You don't understand financial decisions.""
"It's my account!""
"Your father manages it.""
"Then why does your name appear on the withdrawal?""
Claire's face reddened.
I raised my hand.
"Claire, we're getting the bank records tomorrow.""
She looked at me.
"Are you threatening me?""
"No. I'm telling you what happens next.""
Her eyes filled.
Then she said quietly:
"If you do that, you'll destroy this family.""
I stared at her.
"No, Claire. Someone already started doing that.""
She turned and walked away.
But as she reached the doorway, she stopped.
"There's something you don't know about Maya.""
I waited.
Claire looked at Malik.
Then back at me.
"She didn't come downstairs today just to ask for his phone.""
"What did she want?""
Claire's voice dropped.
"She wanted him to delete something that could put her in serious trouble.""
My heart began pounding.
"What?""
Claire swallowed.
"An account. A private account. One your son helped her create.""
Malik jumped to his feet.
"That's a lie!""
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
May you like
And then she delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"Marcus, I think Maya has been using your son's identity.""
