Chapter 7: My Son's Signature

I didn't speak.

I couldn't.

The name on the document seemed to move in front of my eyes.

Malik Bennett.

My eighteen-year-old son.

The same boy who had stood in the living room yesterday, begging me to believe he hadn't touched Maya.

The same boy who had looked at me with tears in his eyes when Claire demanded that I throw him out.

I turned toward my wife.

"Explain what you just said.""

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know how it happened.""

"His signature is on the document.""

"I know.""

"Did you ask him to sign it?""

"No.""

"Then why is it there?""

She began crying.

"I thought Ethan had handled everything.""

I stood.

"You're telling me my son signed a document using my house as collateral, and you don't know why?""

Claire shook her head.

Maya suddenly spoke.

"He didn't know what it was.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

Maya wiped her cheeks.

"Ethan told him it was a delivery authorization.""

I stared at her.

"Malik signed it?""

She nodded.

"How?""

"He needed a signature for something. Ethan said he was helping Mom with paperwork.""

I felt anger rising.

"When?""

"About six months ago.""

I looked at Claire.

"Was Malik here when Ethan came?""

She nodded.

I couldn't believe it.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't think the paperwork mattered.""

"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars matters, Claire!""

She lowered her head.

I immediately called Malik.

He answered after two rings.

"Hey, Dad.""

"Come downstairs.""

"What's wrong?""

"Now, please.""

A few seconds later, he appeared.

His eyes moved between Claire, Maya, and me.

"What happened?""

I held up the agreement.

"Do you recognize this?""

He looked at the paper.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"Answer me.""

He took it from my hand.

Then he stared at the signature.

"I signed this?""

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

He shook his head.

"I remember signing something for Claire.""

My chest tightened.

"What exactly?""

"She said a delivery company needed confirmation that someone over eighteen had received a package.""

Claire looked up.

"Yes. That's what Ethan told me.""

I turned toward her.

"Why was Ethan giving Malik documents to sign?""

"I don't know!""

Malik kept examining the paper.

"There's something wrong.""

"What?""

He pointed toward the bottom.

"Look at the date.""

I leaned closer.

The date was September 14.

Malik shook his head.

"I wasn't even home that day.""

I frowned.

"Where were you?""

"At college orientation.""

I looked at the document again.

Then at Claire.

She went pale.

"Maybe the date was entered incorrectly.""

Malik laughed bitterly.

"That's not my problem. I wasn't here.""

He took out his phone.

"I can prove it.""

Within minutes, he showed us photographs from that day.

A picture outside his university.

Another with his roommate.

A receipt from a campus bookstore.

All time-stamped.

He had been more than two hours away when the document was supposedly signed.

I looked at Claire.

"Explain that.""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Malik placed the document on the table.

"Dad, I signed something, but I never signed this.""

My heart began pounding.

I picked up the paper again.

Now I noticed something else.

The signature looked like Malik's.

But the final stroke was too smooth.

It looked copied.

I photographed the document and sent it to an attorney I had contacted earlier that morning.

Then I called the bank's fraud department.

They advised us not to sign anything else, not to transfer money, and to preserve every original document and message.

While I was on the phone, Nia entered the living room.

She looked at the agreement.

"What's that?""

I explained.

Her expression changed.

"Wait.""

She pulled out her phone.

"I think I have something.""

She opened the camera application.

Then she searched through old footage.

"I installed the camera in the living room, but I also kept some clips from the hallway.""

She found one from six months earlier.

The timestamp showed September 14.

A delivery driver walked into the house carrying a package.

Claire greeted him.

Then Ethan appeared from the kitchen.

He was holding a folder.

I leaned forward.

The footage showed Ethan placing several documents on the coffee table.

Claire signed something.

Then she called Malik.

He entered the room, looked at the papers, and shook his head.

The audio was faint but understandable.

"I don't want to sign anything," Malik said.

Ethan smiled.

"It's just confirmation that your father received the package.""

Malik frowned.

"Then why does it have my name?""

Ethan laughed.

"Because you're the one who's home.""

Claire picked up a pen.

"Malik, sweetheart, it's fine. I checked everything.""

Malik hesitated.

Then he signed the first page.

But before he could sign the second, Claire's phone rang.

She stepped into the kitchen.

Ethan leaned toward Malik.

"Just sign here too. Saves everyone time.""

Malik looked uncertain.

Then the footage jumped.

The camera had stopped recording for several minutes.

When it resumed, Ethan was alone.

He picked up the documents, took photographs of them, and sent something from his phone.

I paused the video.

"Can you zoom in?""

Nia enlarged the screen.

Ethan's phone displayed a messaging application.

The recipient's name was visible.

Claire Bennett.

But the message beneath it was what made my stomach drop.

Got his signature. We can finish the transfer now.

I stared at Claire.

She looked horrified.

"Did you know?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Nia pointed toward the television.

"There's more.""

The recording continued.

Ethan placed the folder into his bag.

Then he looked directly toward the camera.

He smiled.

And whispered:

"Nobody will ever know.""

The room went silent.

Malik backed away.

"That man planned this.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Then my phone rang.

It was the attorney.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?""

"Mr. Bennett, I've reviewed the documents you sent.""

"Is the house at risk?""

There was a pause.

"Potentially. But there's something more urgent.""

"What?""

"The signature attributed to you on the property agreement appears suspicious. I strongly recommend preserving the original and arranging a forensic examination.""

I looked at Claire.

"Understood.""

The attorney continued.

"Also, I found a public filing connected to the loan.""

"What filing?""

"A transfer application involving your property.""

My chest tightened.

"To whom?""

Another pause.

Then he said:

"The proposed beneficiary is Ethan Cole.""

I looked at the envelope.

One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.

A fraudulent signature.

My son's identity.

My property.

I had thought Ethan was trying to collect a debt.

Now I understood something much worse.

He wasn't trying to recover his money.

He was trying to take my house.

And according to the attorney, the transfer application had been submitted three weeks earlier.

I ended the call.

Then I looked at my wife.

"Claire, I need to know everything.""

She began sobbing.

"I swear I never wanted this.""

"Then tell me why your name appears on every document.""

She stared at the floor.

Finally, she whispered:

"Because Ethan threatened me.""

I leaned forward.

"With what?""

She looked at Malik.

Then Nia.

Then me.

May you like

And the next sentence shattered whatever remained of my trust.

"He told me he had a recording of Maya and Malik together upstairs.""
