Chapter 6: The Envelope That Could Take Everything
For several seconds, I stood motionless.
The man outside my front door hadn't moved.
He was probably in his mid-thirties, wearing a charcoal-gray jacket and expensive-looking shoes. His hair was neatly combed, and he carried himself with the confidence of someone who believed he already owned the place.
I looked at the envelope again.
*THE HOUSE IS ALREADY MINE.*
Behind me, Claire was crying.
Maya had backed against the kitchen counter.
And somewhere upstairs, my son was probably wondering whether his father was about to lose everything.
I opened the door but kept one hand against it.
"Can I help you?""
The stranger smiled.
"Marcus Bennett?""
"Who are you?""
He extended his hand.
"Ethan Cole.""
I didn't take it.
His smile faded slightly.
"You're probably wondering why I'm here.""
"I'm wondering why you're standing on my porch holding an envelope with my property written on it.""
He glanced past me.
"Is Claire home?""
"She's not available.""
"That's unfortunate. I was hoping she'd explain things herself.""
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
"Whatever business you have with my wife, you can discuss it with me.""
Ethan studied my face.
Then he chuckled.
"She didn't tell you everything, did she?""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Start talking.""
He held up the envelope.
"Your wife signed an agreement six months ago. It was connected to a private loan.""
"What loan?""
"One that helped her daughter.""
I stared at him.
"How much?""
"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
For a moment, I thought I'd misheard.
"What?""
"One hundred and twenty thousand.""
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the number was so outrageous that my mind refused to accept it.
"Claire doesn't have one hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
"She didn't need to. She used your property as security.""
My stomach dropped.
I grabbed the envelope.
Inside were photocopies of documents.
The first page contained my name, the address of my house, and a legal description of the property.
The second page showed Claire's signature.
The third contained a document titled PROPERTY SECURITY AGREEMENT.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
My house was listed as collateral.
But something didn't make sense.
I hadn't signed anything.
I looked up.
"Where is my signature?""
Ethan smiled.
"That's an interesting question.""
"Where is it?""
"Perhaps you should ask your wife.""
I stepped closer.
"Listen carefully. If you forged my signature, you're going to have a very serious problem.""
His smile disappeared.
"Careful, Mr. Bennett. You don't want to make accusations you can't support.""
I pulled out my phone.
"Then let's call the police and let them examine the documents.""
For the first time, Ethan looked uncomfortable.
He stepped backward.
"There's no need for that.""
"Why?""
"Because everyone can benefit from a reasonable conversation.""
"Not anymore.""
I opened the front door.
"Leave.""
Ethan adjusted his jacket.
"Tell Claire I'll give her until Friday.""
"Friday for what?""
"To produce the remaining documents and settle the balance.""
He glanced toward the upstairs windows.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"And tell Malik to stop pretending he doesn't know anything.""
I grabbed his arm.
"What does my son have to do with this?""
Ethan pulled away.
"Ask him about the account.""
"What account?""
But Ethan was already walking toward his car.
Before getting inside, he turned.
"One more thing, Marcus.""
I waited.
"Your wife isn't the only person who signed something.""
He smiled.
"Have a good afternoon.""
Then he drove away.
I stood on the porch until his car disappeared.
When I returned inside, Claire was waiting in the hallway.
She looked at the envelope in my hand.
"Did he tell you?""
"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
She closed her eyes.
"Marcus...""
"You used my house as collateral?""
"I didn't think he would actually come after it.""
I stared at her.
"That's your explanation?""
"I was desperate.""
"For what?""
She started crying.
"To save Maya.""
I threw the papers onto the coffee table.
"How does stealing from Malik save Maya? How does taking out a loan against my house save her?""
Claire wiped her face.
"Ethan told me he could make the money disappear.""
I stared at her.
"Money doesn't disappear.""
"He said he had connections. He said the debt would be settled through an investment.""
"An investment?""
"He promised to double the money.""
I felt sick.
"Claire, you gave a stranger access to our finances.""
"He wasn't a stranger to Maya.""
"That makes it worse!""
She flinched.
Then Maya appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
"Mom?""
Claire turned.
"Go upstairs.""
"No.""
"Maya, please.""
The girl stepped into the living room.
"He's not supposed to come here.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"Ethan told me he would handle everything.""
"How?""
"I don't know.""
"Did you give him my documents?""
She nodded.
"Did you help him access Malik's financial information?""
She began crying.
"I didn't know he would use it like that.""
I pointed toward the staircase.
"Where did you get the remaining documents?""
Maya looked at Claire.
Then she looked at me.
"I don't have them.""
"Who does?""
She hesitated.
"Ethan.""
I sat down.
The room felt smaller.
My house.
My money.
My children.
My marriage.
Everything I'd believed was secure had become part of someone else's scheme.
Then I noticed something on the third page of the agreement.
A signature.
Not mine.
But it looked remarkably similar.
I examined it carefully.
The capital M.
The long final stroke.
The unusual loop in the letter B.
I had seen that handwriting before.
I looked at Claire.
"Who signed this?""
She started shaking.
"I don't know.""
I placed the document on the table.
"Claire, I need the truth.""
She covered her mouth.
Then she whispered:
"It wasn't Ethan.""
I waited.
Claire looked toward the stairs.
May you like
And finally, she said:
"Malik signed it.""
