Chapter 7: The Trap He Built For Me
The police lights reflected across the maternity clinic windows.
Red.
Blue.
Red.
Blue.
I stood frozen beside Daniel’s SUV, one hand resting protectively over my stomach, while my mind tried to process what he had just said.
Someone had reported me for fraud.
Me.
The woman who spent three years trusting her husband.
The woman who had no idea what was happening behind her back.
The woman who had just learned her marriage was built on deception.
“How?”” I whispered.
Daniel opened the SUV door but didn’t rush me.
He knew me well enough to understand that I needed answers before I could move.
“How could they accuse me of fraud?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because someone prepared evidence.””
I looked at Mark.
He was still standing near the clinic entrance.
Watching.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Watching.
And suddenly, everything became clear.
The calm expression.
The confidence.
The way he stopped fighting when Daniel exposed the affair.
He wasn’t defeated.
He was waiting.
Waiting for his next move.
“Mark.””
His eyes met mine.
For once, he didn’t look angry.
He looked almost sorry.
That made it worse.
“Emma…”
“Did you do this?””
He didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Answer her.””
Mark looked at Daniel.
“You don’t understand.””
Daniel laughed once.
“No. I understand perfectly.””
Mark’s expression hardened.
“This is bigger than you think.””
I stared at him.
“Bigger?””
“Yes.””
His voice became cold again.
The familiar Mark returned.
The man who believed he was always two steps ahead.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
My stomach tightened.
“Is that supposed to scare me?””
“It’s supposed to warn you.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Careful.””
Mark ignored him.
“Emma, you need to understand something. Your grandmother’s estate wasn’t as simple as you thought.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
He smiled slightly.
“There were conditions.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?””
Mark looked at him.
“You didn’t know?””
That was the first time I saw uncertainty in my brother’s eyes.
A small crack.
Mark noticed.
And he enjoyed it.
“Interesting.””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“What conditions?””
Mark looked at me.
“Ask your grandmother’s lawyer.””
My heart raced.
“What conditions?””
He stepped closer.
“Maybe you should ask why she never told you everything.””
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because my grandmother had always been honest with me.
She was the one person I trusted completely.
But now…
Another doubt appeared.
And Mark saw it.
He always knew where to place doubt.
That was his talent.
“I loved your grandmother,” he said.
I almost laughed.
“You used her.””
“No.””
“You used me.””
His expression changed.
“I made choices.””
“Exactly.””
I looked at him.
“Choices.””
A police officer walked toward us.
“Mrs. Carter?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
“Could I speak with you for a moment?””
Daniel immediately stepped beside me.
“She will have legal representation present.””
The officer nodded.
“That’s fine. We just need to inform her that a complaint has been filed.””
My heart sank.
“By who?””
The officer looked at the paperwork.
“Your husband.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Of course it was him.
The officer continued.
“He claims you misrepresented financial information before your marriage.””
I stared.
“What?””
Mark looked away.
I couldn’t believe it.
“He claims I did what?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Ma’am, I’m only telling you what was reported.””
Daniel took the paperwork.
His eyes moved quickly across the page.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What does it say?””
He handed it to me.
I read the accusation.
According to Mark, I had hidden assets.
I had manipulated him.
I had entered the marriage under false pretenses.
The irony was so unbelievable that I almost smiled.
He had married me for money.
And now he was accusing me of using money.
“This is insane.””
Daniel nodded.
“It is.””
Mark stepped closer.
“You see?””
His voice was quiet.
“I tried to handle this privately.””
I looked at him.
“You reported your pregnant wife to the police.””
“I protected myself.””
“You attacked me.””
“I protected myself.””
The repetition made my stomach turn.
That was who he was.
Every cruel thing he did was protection.
Every lie was necessity.
Every betrayal was something he had to do.
Daniel looked at Mark with disgust.
“You’re unbelievable.””
Mark smiled.
“You still don’t get it.””
“Get what?””
“That people believe me.””
Daniel went silent.
Mark continued.
“I have records.””
He pointed toward the folder.
“You think those documents prove I’m guilty?””
He laughed softly.
“They prove we both had secrets.””
My blood ran cold.
“What secrets?””
He looked at me.
“Your grandmother.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
But Mark continued.
“Ask him.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What is he talking about?””
My brother didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“There is something I didn’t tell you.””
The world shifted.
Again.
Another secret.
Another person who had decided what I could handle.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your grandmother knew about Mark.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She met him before you did.””
The words felt impossible.
Mark smiled.
“Exactly.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked down.
“After Grandma became sick, she asked me to investigate some people who had approached her about the estate.””
My heart raced.
“Mark?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“She knew?””
“She suspected.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He looked at Mark.
“Of pushing you toward him.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Grandma believed that if she told you Mark was dangerous, you would defend him.””
I looked away.
Because she would have been right.
I had defended him.
I had chosen him.
I had fought my own family for him.
Daniel continued.
“She wanted proof before she destroyed your relationship.””
Mark scoffed.
“Your grandmother was paranoid.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“She was right.””
Silence.
Then Mark said something that made my blood run cold.
“You still don’t know the full story.””
I stared.
“What else?””
He smiled faintly.
“You think I’m the only one who lied to you?””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Enough.””
But Mark looked directly at me.
“Ask your brother where he was the night your grandmother changed her will.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
Daniel said nothing.
And that silence was devastating.
Because it was the same silence Mark gave me.
The silence of someone hiding something.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
“Emma…”
I stepped backward.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No more secrets.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I was there.””
My chest tightened.
“At Grandma’s lawyer’s office?””
He nodded.
“Why?””
“Because she asked me to be.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
Daniel looked heartbroken.
“She made me promise that if anything happened to her…”
A pause.
“I would protect you from everyone.””
I stared.
“Everyone?””
He nodded slowly.
“Even if that meant protecting you from the people you loved.””
The words hung between us.
I looked at Mark.
Then Daniel.
My entire world suddenly felt like it had been built on hidden rooms.
Hidden doors.
Hidden truths.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What now?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He just turned the phone toward me.
It was an email.
From a lawyer.
The subject line made my heart stop.
*Emergency Notice Regarding Emma Carter’s Inheritance.*
I opened it.
The first sentence destroyed me.
*Dear Ms. Carter, we regret to inform you that the estate documents submitted after your grandmother’s death may have been altered.*
My hands started shaking.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Mark wasn’t just trying to take my house.
He wasn’t just hiding affairs.
He wasn’t just destroying my marriage.
He was trying to prove that my entire inheritance was never mine.
And the person who could prove the truth…
Was my grandmother’s missing lawyer.
