Chapter 4: The Child I Was Never Supposed To Know About
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the cars passing on the street.
Not the voices of strangers.
Not even my own breathing.
The only thing I could see was Mark’s face.
The way the color disappeared.
The way his eyes moved from the phone screen to mine.
The way a man looked when he realized the truth had finally caught up with him.
“Claire’s baby?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
I didn’t need them to.
The silence was enough.
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
To the child inside me.
My son.
My baby.
The little life I had protected every day for seven months.
And suddenly, I wondered if Mark had ever looked at me while thinking about another child.
“Emma,” Mark said.
I looked at him.
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Not commanding.
Afraid.
“Don’t jump to conclusions.””
I almost laughed.
“Jump to conclusions?””
My voice cracked.
“You have another woman texting you about a baby.””
“It’s not what you think.””
“Then tell me what I’m supposed to think.””
He looked around.
Everyone was watching.
For the first time, I saw him uncomfortable being the center of attention.
Good.
For years, he controlled every room we entered.
He controlled every conversation.
He controlled what I believed.
But today, he couldn’t control the truth.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is the baby, Mark?””
Mark looked at him.
“You don’t get to question me.””
Daniel’s expression remained calm.
“Actually, I do.””
He nodded toward me.
“Because every secret you kept from her affected her life.””
Mark scoffed.
“You’re acting like you know everything.””
“No.””
Daniel opened another folder.
“But I know enough.””
My stomach tightened.
How much had my brother discovered?
How long had he been investigating?
And why had I been the last person to know?
“Daniel,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“I didn’t want to tell you until I was sure.””
“Sure about what?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
Because I knew whatever came next would change something permanently.
“Claire is not just someone Mark has been seeing.””
Mark immediately stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Daniel continued.
“She was his girlfriend before you.””
My heart stopped.
Before me.
The words echoed.
Before me.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Mark and I met five years ago.
He told me he had been single for almost a year.
He told me his last relationship ended peacefully.
He told me he was ready for something serious.
Everything suddenly felt like a carefully written script.
“He lied,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked at Mark.
“Is that true?””
His jaw tightened.
“Emma—”
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer.
And somehow, that was worse than any confession.
I stepped backward.
The clinic wall pressed against my shoulder.
My knees felt weak.
“How long?””
Mark rubbed his face.
“Emma, please.””
“How long were you with her?””
He looked away.
“Before we met.””
“And after?””
Silence.
The answer came without words.
A woman nearby covered her mouth.
Someone whispered, “That poor woman.””
I hated that.
I hated being looked at like a victim.
Because I had spent years convincing myself I wasn’t one.
Mark noticed my expression.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
I shook my head slowly.
“I’m finally understanding.””
His eyes narrowed.
“You’re going to believe your brother over your husband?””
I looked at him.
“My husband slapped me.””
The words were quiet.
But they landed heavily.
Mark’s face changed.
“I said I was sorry.””
“You still haven’t apologized.””
He froze.
Because he hadn’t.
Not really.
He had explained.
He had blamed stress.
He had blamed me.
He had blamed everything except himself.
Daniel picked up the papers.
“Claire gave birth six months ago.””
My blood went cold.
Six months.
I looked at Mark.
“You knew?””
He said nothing.
“You knew she had a baby?””
“Emma—”
“You knew?””
His silence broke something inside me.
Six months ago.
I was at home preparing for our future.
Buying furniture.
Reading parenting books.
While my husband knew another woman had his child.
Daniel continued carefully.
“The child is registered under Mark’s name.””
I closed my eyes.
A sharp pain moved through my chest.
Not physical.
Something deeper.
Because suddenly all those moments made sense.
The late nights.
The secret phone calls.
The missing money.
The strange expenses.
I remembered asking him.
“Are we okay financially?””
And he smiled.
“We’re fine.””
I remembered asking why he was distant.
“You’re imagining things.””
I remembered crying alone in the bathroom.
Wondering what I had done wrong.
Nothing.
I had done nothing.
Mark took a step toward me.
“Emma, listen.””
I looked at him.
“Did you ever plan to tell me?””
He stopped.
A terrible pause.
Then he whispered:
“I didn’t know how.””
That was his answer.
Not “I was going to.””
Not “I was scared.””
Just—
I didn’t know how.
I wiped my tears.
“Did you love her?””
Mark looked down.
“I cared about her.””
My stomach twisted.
“And me?””
His eyes lifted.
“I love you.””
But the words felt empty.
Because love without honesty was just a weapon.
“You love me?””
I looked at the baby shoes in my hands.
“You love me, but you built another life behind my back?””
Mark’s voice became desperate.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””
“What wasn’t?””
“The baby.””
The word hit me.
I stared at him.
“The baby wasn’t supposed to happen?””
He immediately shook his head.
“No, that’s not what I meant.””
But it was.
I heard it.
He knew I heard it.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Careful, Mark.””
Mark ignored him.
“Emma, I was trying to fix things.””
“Fix what?””
“Everything.””
He looked frustrated.
“You don’t understand the pressure I was under.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“You had pressure?””
My voice rose.
“I was pregnant with your child while you were hiding another one.””
“I was going to handle it.””
“How?””
He said nothing.
Because there was no good answer.
Daniel opened another document.
“There’s more.””
I looked at him.
“More?””
He nodded.
“This is why Mark wanted you to sign the property papers today.””
Mark’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked at me.
“He owes Claire money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Medical expenses. Apartment payments. Other costs.””
I stared.
“He was paying for her?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
My heart sank.
“My money.””
The words came out quietly.
Daniel nodded.
“Your house. Your inheritance. Your accounts.””
Mark shook his head.
“That’s not fair.””
I turned toward him.
Not fair.
That was what he said.
Not fair.
After everything.
“You used my grandmother’s gift to support a life you hid from me.””
“I was going to pay it back.””
“When?””
He looked away.
“When you signed the papers?””
The silence was devastating.
Because I knew.
I finally knew.
The house wasn’t just collateral.
It was his escape plan.
He needed my signature.
He needed control.
He needed me dependent on him.
And if I refused…
He needed another way.
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He answered.
“Tell me.””
He listened silently.
Then his face became serious.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
“Send everything to me.””
He ended the call.
My heart raced.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Mark.
Then at me.
“The investigator found something else.””
Mark stepped backward.
“No.””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“The baby Claire had six months ago…”
He looked at me.
“…isn’t the only child Mark has been hiding.””
The entire parking lot seemed to disappear.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel handed me his phone.
On the screen was a photograph.
A hospital record.
A name.
A date.
Another woman.
Another child.
My hands trembled as I read the information.
And then I saw the final line.
The line that made my entire world collapse.
*Father: Mark Carter.*
I looked up at my husband.
“How many children do you have, Mark?””
May you like
For the first time since I knew him…
He had no lie ready.
