Chapter 3: The Woman Behind The Secret
The name on Mark’s phone glowed brighter than the afternoon sun.
Claire.
Five letters.
Five letters that somehow felt heavier than the folder full of evidence in my brother’s hands.
Mark stared at the screen.
The ringing continued.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Nobody spoke.
The entire parking lot seemed frozen, waiting for what he would do.
He looked at me first.
Not the phone.
Me.
That told me everything.
“Emma,” he said quickly.
I felt something inside me crack.
Because I knew that tone.
The same tone he used when he was about to create a story.
A reason.
An explanation designed to make me doubt what I had seen.
“Don’t answer that,” he said.
My eyes moved from him to the phone.
“Why?””
His expression tightened.
“It’s complicated.””
I almost laughed.
Complicated.
That was the word people used when the truth was ugly.
When simple honesty was impossible.
Daniel folded his arms.
“Answer it.””
Mark looked at him.
“This has nothing to do with you.””
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“You’re right.””
He glanced at me.
“It has everything to do with her.””
The phone stopped ringing.
For a second, there was silence.
Then another notification appeared.
A message.
Mark’s eyes widened slightly.
He reached for the phone.
I moved faster.
For the first time in three years, I stopped asking permission.
I grabbed it.
“Emma.””
His voice was sharp.
Not scared.
Not apologetic.
A command.
The old me would have handed it back immediately.
The old me would have said, “I trust you.””
But the old me was standing outside a maternity clinic with a swollen cheek and dirty baby shoes in her hands.
I unlocked the screen.
Mark stepped forward.
“Give me my phone.””
I ignored him.
The message was short.
*Claire: Why aren’t you answering? I need to know if Emma signed the papers today.*
My hands went cold.
I read it again.
Then again.
Emma.
My name.
The papers.
The same papers Mark had been forcing me to sign.
I looked up slowly.
“Who is Claire?””
Mark said nothing.
That silence was louder than any confession.
Daniel walked closer.
“Emma.””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
His jaw tightened.
One of the men behind him quietly said, “Mr. Carter, this confirms it.””
Mark’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You used my sister’s pregnancy appointment as a chance to pressure her into signing over her property.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
Mark opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched him struggle.
And for the first time, I realized something.
Mark wasn’t struggling because he was innocent.
He was struggling because he was running out of lies.
“Emma,” he said finally.
His voice softened.
“Please listen to me.””
I stared at him.
“How long?””
He frowned.
“What?””
“How long have you known Claire?””
His eyes shifted.
A tiny movement.
But I saw it.
“Emma—”
“How long?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“This isn’t what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
He looked around.
At the strangers.
At Daniel.
At the men in suits.
Then back at me.
“I was helping someone.””
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“A woman?””
His silence answered.
My chest tightened.
“Were you seeing her?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too desperately.
I looked at him.
“Then why does she care whether I sign my house away?””
Mark’s face darkened.
“You’re making assumptions.””
“No.””
I held up his phone.
“I’m reading your messages.””
He reached for it.
Daniel stepped between us.
“Try that again, and you’ll have a much bigger problem.””
Mark glared.
“You think you can threaten me?””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“No.””
He pointed at the phone.
“I think you’re finally realizing your choices have consequences.””
Mark looked away.
That was when I noticed something.
A small detail.
Something I had ignored before.
His wedding ring.
He always wore it.
Always.
Except today.
My eyes dropped to his left hand.
Bare.
My stomach turned.
“Where is your ring?””
Mark looked down.
For the first time, panic flashed across his face.
“I took it off at work.””
“Why?””
“Because my hands were dirty.””
“You work in an office.””
He said nothing.
A memory suddenly returned.
Two months earlier.
Mark had come home late.
He smelled like expensive perfume.
Not mine.
When I asked about it, he laughed.
“Are you accusing me now?””
I apologized.
I actually apologized.
Because somehow, I always ended up apologizing.
Daniel watched my expression.
“You remember something.””
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
He already knew.
“Emma.””
Mark stepped closer.
“Don’t let him poison you against me.””
I looked at him.
“Poison me?””
My voice shook.
“You hit me today.””
His face changed.
“I lost control.””
“You hurt me.””
“I said I’m sorry.””
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
But firmly.
“You’re sorry because someone saw.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Mark’s eyes hardened.
“You’re going to regret this.””
Daniel immediately moved.
But I raised my hand.
“No.””
Everyone stopped.
Because I wanted to hear it.
I wanted to see him without the mask.
“You mean that?””
Mark stared at me.
“I mean you’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
I looked at the baby shoes in Daniel’s hand.
Then at my husband.
“The mistake was believing you loved me more than you loved control.””
For a moment, he looked almost hurt.
Then his expression changed.
The sadness disappeared.
The anger returned.
“You really think your brother can save you?””
I said nothing.
“You think money and lawyers make you untouchable?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Actually, I think evidence does.””
Mark’s face went pale again.
“What evidence?””
Daniel reached into the folder.
This time, he pulled out photographs.
He handed them to me.
I didn’t want to look.
Some part of me already knew.
But I forced myself.
The first picture showed Mark leaving a restaurant.
With a woman.
A blonde woman.
The second showed them entering a luxury apartment building.
The third showed them holding hands.
My fingers trembled.
“When?”” I whispered.
Daniel answered quietly.
“Last month.””
I closed my eyes.
Last month.
When I was buying baby clothes.
When I was painting the nursery.
When I was lying awake at night wondering why my husband seemed so distant.
He was somewhere else.
With someone else.
Mark stepped forward.
“Emma, let me explain.””
I looked at him.
“Did you love her?””
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
That pause destroyed whatever hope I had left.
“I don’t know.””
I nodded slowly.
The honesty hurt.
But it was the first honest thing he had said all day.
A nurse from the clinic approached cautiously.
“Mrs. Carter?””
I turned.
She held a small bag.
“Your baby shoes were cleaned. One of the staff members washed them for you.””
I took the bag.
Inside were the tiny white shoes.
Clean again.
My eyes filled with tears.
Not because of the shoes.
Because someone who didn’t even know me had shown more kindness than my own husband.
The nurse looked at Mark.
Then at my face.
She didn’t ask questions.
She didn’t need to.
“Your doctor wants you to come back inside when you’re ready,” she said softly.
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
After she left, Daniel placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
“You don’t have to decide everything today.””
I looked at him.
“But I do need to know everything.””
Daniel hesitated.
That scared me.
“What?””
He looked at the folder.
“There’s something else.””
My heart sank.
“What else could there be?””
Daniel glanced at Mark.
“Claire isn’t the only person involved.””
Mark’s expression changed immediately.
“Stop.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Before I came here, I had someone investigate Mark’s financial records.””
My breathing became shallow.
“And?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He wasn’t just hiding an affair.””
A pause.
“He was preparing to leave you.””
Mark’s face went blank.
“What?””
Daniel pulled out another document.
“He opened a separate account six months ago.””
I stared.
“For what?””
Daniel looked directly at Mark.
“To move money.””
My voice barely came out.
“Where?””
Daniel handed me the paper.
The account name was printed clearly.
And beneath it was a transaction description.
A transfer scheduled for the day after my baby was supposed to be born.
My hands began shaking.
Because suddenly I understood.
Mark wasn’t just trying to take my house.
He wasn’t just hiding another woman.
He was planning something bigger.
Something that involved my child.
Something that he thought would leave me with nothing.
Then Daniel said the words that made my blood run cold.
“Emma, Mark wasn’t trying to get your property because he needed money.””
He looked at the document.
“He needed it because he knew he was about to disappear.””
Behind us, Mark’s phone buzzed again.
Another message from Claire.
This time, the preview was visible.
*Claire: Did you tell her about the baby?*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Mark.
“The baby?””
He froze.
And in that moment…
May you like
I realized Claire wasn’t asking about my baby.
She was asking about *hers*.
