Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Papers

I stared at the folder in my brother’s hand.

For three years, I had defended Mark against everyone.

Against my brother.

Against my friends.

Against the quiet voice inside my own head that kept asking why I was always apologizing for things I didn’t do.

But standing outside that maternity clinic, watching my husband’s face turn pale, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe I had never known him at all.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

My brother looked at me.

His expression softened immediately.

The anger disappeared.

The coldness disappeared.

For a second, he was just my older brother again.

The person who used to carry me home when I fell off my bicycle as a child.

The person who stayed awake all night when I had a fever.

The person who promised our father before he died that he would always protect me.

“Emma,” Daniel said quietly.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

My eyes moved back to Mark.

He shook his head quickly.

“No. Don’t do this.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Don’t do what?””

“Don’t pretend you’re some hero who suddenly cares.””

The people around us grew silent.

Mark looked around, noticing the audience he had created.

His confidence was returning.

That was something I had seen before.

Whenever he felt exposed, he changed tactics.

He became charming.

Reasonable.

The victim.

He stepped closer to Daniel.

“This is my wife.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“And she is my sister.””

“This is a private family matter.””

Mark forced a smile.

“You can’t just come here because she called you after an argument.””

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at Mark.

“She didn’t call me because of an argument.””

A pause.

“She called me because she was scared.””

My chest tightened.

I looked down.

Because he was right.

I had been scared.

Not just today.

For months.

Maybe years.

But admitting that felt like admitting I had made the biggest mistake of my life.

Mark noticed my silence.

“Emma, seriously?””

His voice changed.

Softer.

Almost gentle.

The same voice he used after every cruel moment.

The voice that made me question myself.

“Are you really going to let him come between us?””

I looked at him.

A few minutes earlier, I would have apologized.

I would have explained.

I would have tried to calm him down.

But something inside me had shifted.

Maybe it was the baby.

Maybe it was seeing those tiny shoes lying in the gutter.

Maybe it was finally realizing that love was not supposed to feel like fear.

“No,” I said.

Mark blinked.

“What?””

“I’m not letting him come between us.””

I took a breath.

“You did that yourself.””

His face hardened.

The softness vanished.

“There she is.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Choose your next words carefully.””

Mark laughed.

“Or what?””

The two men behind Daniel exchanged a glance.

Mark noticed.

For the first time, he seemed unsure.

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were printed documents.

Bank statements.

Property records.

Emails.

My stomach tightened.

“What is all this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Things I found after you disappeared from everyone’s lives.””

“I didn’t disappear.””

“You stopped answering calls.””

“I was busy.””

Daniel’s eyes moved to Mark.

“No. You were isolated.””

Mark immediately interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him. He’s always hated me.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Mark.

“Why would he hate you?””

Mark opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

It was a tiny pause.

But I noticed.

Daniel noticed too.

“Because I asked questions,” Daniel said.

He handed me the first document.

I hesitated before taking it.

My fingers trembled.

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

“What am I looking at?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The property transfer agreement Mark has been trying to make you sign.””

I looked at the page.

At first, nothing made sense.

Legal terms.

Numbers.

Clauses.

Then I saw my name.

And below it…

I saw something that made my heart stop.

“Why is his company listed here?””

Mark stepped forward.

“Emma, don’t let him confuse you.””

I looked up.

“Answer me.””

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“Answer me, Mark.””

He looked away.

That was the first time I had ever seen him unable to immediately explain himself.

Daniel continued.

“The house wasn’t just being transferred into his name.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“What do you mean?””

“He was using your property as collateral.””

The world seemed to slow.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I checked everything.””

Mark stepped between us.

“Daniel is twisting things.””

“Then explain,” Daniel said.

Mark glared.

“I don’t owe you anything.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You owe her.””

A painful silence followed.

I felt my baby move.

A small kick.

A reminder that I wasn’t alone.

Not anymore.

“Mark,” I said softly.

He looked at me.

“Is it true?””

His jaw tightened.

“Emma—”

“Is it true?””

He sighed.

“You don’t understand business.””

That answer hurt more than if he had admitted it.

Because it wasn’t denial.

It was an excuse.

“You were going to use my grandmother’s house.””

“It was our house.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“It was mine.””

Mark stared at me.

The woman standing in front of him was different from the woman who used to beg him to communicate.

I didn’t know when she appeared.

But she was there.

“You said it was just paperwork.””

“It is paperwork.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me about the loan?””

His silence answered.

The woman near the clinic entrance whispered, “She didn’t know?””

Another person raised their phone slightly.

Mark noticed.

His face darkened.

“Everyone needs to mind their own business.””

Daniel looked around.

“No.””

He pointed at Mark.

“They need to see exactly who you are.””

Mark stepped forward.

“You think you’re powerful because you have money?””

Daniel smiled.

“No.””

He glanced at me.

“I think protecting my sister matters more than money.””

Mark laughed bitterly.

“You really think she’s going to leave me?””

The question hung in the air.

And for a moment, everyone looked at me.

Including Mark.

Because that was the question I had been avoiding.

Would I leave?

Could I?

I thought about the baby.

The house.

The years I had lost.

The woman I used to be.

Then I looked at my husband.

The man who had slapped me.

The man who had hurt me because he thought nobody would stop him.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do yet,” I said.

Mark smiled slightly.

Like he heard weakness.

“But I know one thing.””

I stepped closer.

“You will never touch me like that again.””

His smile disappeared.

Daniel quietly nodded.

The two men behind him moved toward Mark’s car.

Mark’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?””

Daniel reached into the folder again.

“This isn’t finished.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’re about to find out something you should have known before you put your hands on my sister.””

He pulled out another document.

This time, Mark’s reaction was immediate.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

My heart started pounding.

“What is that?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Mark.

“The reason he was so desperate to get your house.””

Mark’s voice turned sharp.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Because your husband isn’t just drowning in debt.””

A pause.

“He’s been hiding another family secret.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What secret?””

Daniel looked down at the paper.

Then he said the name written across the top.

A name I had never heard before.

A name that made Mark take a step backward.

“Emma… your husband has been financially supporting a woman named Claire for the last two years.””

My blood went cold.

Mark’s face went completely white.

And before I could ask who Claire was…

His phone started ringing.

The screen lit up.

May you like

A woman’s name appeared.

*Claire.*
