Chapter 9: The Man Behind Vanessa's Lies

The following morning, I met the attorney at a small office downtown.

His name was Robert Jenkins.

He was sixty-two, wore thin-framed glasses, and carried a leather briefcase that looked older than my marriage to Rachel.

Ryan came with me.

Nora stayed with Margaret.

Before sitting down, Robert locked the office door.

“I understand what happened at your wedding,” he said.

I nodded.

“Then you understand why I'm here.””

He placed a thick folder on the desk.

“Michael Cole was my client for eleven years.””

“What did he have to do with Vanessa?””

Robert removed a photograph.

It showed a younger Vanessa standing beside Michael.

“He was her father.””

I frowned.

“That isn't exactly a secret.””

“No. But the relationship was more complicated than you were told.””

Robert opened the folder.

“Michael was involved in several businesses that supplied medical equipment to private clinics. One of those clinics was connected to Dr. Hayes.””

Ryan leaned forward.

“Connected how?””

“Through a series of companies that processed insurance claims. Some were legitimate. Others were not.””

I looked at the documents.

There were invoices, account statements, and copies of medical forms.

Many contained names I didn't recognize.

Robert continued.

“Rachel discovered that the companies were being used to create false medical histories. Those records were then used to obtain insurance payments and, in certain cases, influence family court proceedings.””

I felt sick.

“So Vanessa learned the business from her father.””

“More than learned it. She helped operate it.””

I stared at him.

“Why did she target me?””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“Your life insurance policy was substantial.””

I remembered the paperwork Vanessa had placed on the kitchen counter.

“Did she change the beneficiary?””

Robert opened another folder.

“Michael arranged for a financial consultant to contact you several months ago. The documents you signed were not what Vanessa told you they were.””

Ryan swore under his breath.

“What did Ethan sign?””

Robert turned the page.

“An authorization allowing a policy review. It did not change the beneficiary by itself, but it gave the consultant permission to request modifications.””

I felt cold.

“Did any modification go through?””

Robert shook his head.

“Fortunately, the insurance company requested additional verification. The process was never completed.””

I leaned back.

“Why would Michael want my life insurance?””

Robert looked directly at me.

“Because he believed Vanessa could eventually become the legal guardian of your daughter and obtain access to assets held in trust for her.””

I stared at him.

“Through marriage?””

“Potentially. The documents were designed to establish a series of financial and legal claims.””

Ryan shook his head.

“That is insane.””

Robert nodded.

“It was calculated.””

I looked down at the folder.

“Was Michael involved in Rachel's accident?””

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Then he removed a handwritten note.

“This was found among his private papers after his death.””

He slid it toward me.

The handwriting was uneven.

*Vanessa says Rachel has the original recording. If she refuses to cooperate, Martin will handle the problem. We cannot afford another investigation.*

My stomach tightened.

“Martin Hayes?””

Robert nodded.

“Michael had been paying him.””

I stood.

“Paying him for what?””

“Medical documentation. Consultation fees. Access to patient records.””

Ryan looked at the attorney.

“Did he order Rachel's death?””

Robert shook his head.

“I don't have proof of that. But I do have evidence that he knew Vanessa was following her.””

I stared at the note.

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“I did. But the evidence was incomplete.””

I sat again.

“Then what else do you have?””

Robert removed a small digital recorder.

“Michael made a statement shortly before he died. He knew he was being investigated. He wanted to protect his estate and avoid prosecution.””

He pressed a button.

A man's voice filled the office.

Michael Cole.

I recognized him immediately.

“Vanessa has gone too far. I told her to stay away from the Miller family. Rachel was supposed to give us the documents, not expose everything.””

A pause.

Then:

“Martin said the accident would frighten her. He never told me she would die.””

My blood ran cold.

The recording continued.

“Ethan Miller was never supposed to be involved. The daughter was supposed to stay with her grandmother. Vanessa was going to marry him, establish herself as the stable parent, and secure the family assets.””

Ryan looked at me.

I couldn't speak.

Michael continued.

“But now Rachel is dead, and the girl has the phone. If Vanessa hasn't found it, someone else will.””

The recording stopped.

I stared at the device.

There was no doubt anymore.

Rachel's death had been connected to the people who had spent six years hiding the truth.

But there was still something I needed to understand.

“Robert, why did Michael say the accident would frighten Rachel?””

The attorney looked at me.

“Because he believed the plan was to force her to surrender the records.””

“Then what happened?””

“According to his statement, Martin Hayes was driving behind Rachel. Vanessa was in another vehicle. There was an altercation at the roadside.””

I thought about the video.

The headlights.

The sudden movement.

The silver car disappearing around the curve.

“Was Rachel forced off the road?””

Robert hesitated.

“The police will need to determine that. But there is additional evidence.””

He removed a final document.

It was a copy of a traffic camera maintenance report.

The camera at the intersection had been disabled shortly before the accident.

The technician's signature was at the bottom.

I recognized the name.

Martin Hayes.

I looked up.

“He arranged it?””

Robert nodded.

“That's what the investigators are examining.””

I felt as though I had been punched.

My phone rang.

Claire Donovan.

I answered.

“Claire?””

“Ethan, where are you?””

“Downtown. Why?””

“Vanessa has made a statement.””

I straightened.

“What did she say?””

“She admitted that she knew Rachel was pregnant. She also admitted that she had been following Rachel on the night of the accident.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did she admit causing the crash?””

“Not yet.””

“What about Dr. Hayes?””

“He's being questioned separately.””

Claire paused.

“There's something else. Vanessa wants to speak with you.””

I looked at Ryan.

“Why?””

“She says she has information about Rachel's final moments.””

My throat tightened.

“Did she say what?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“She claims Rachel survived the initial crash.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“According to Vanessa, Rachel was alive when they reached the car.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then why did she die?””

Claire hesitated.

“Vanessa says Martin Hayes was the last person who approached the vehicle.””

The office fell silent.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

“Where is Vanessa now?””

“At the police station.””

“I'm coming.””

Ryan stood.

“Ethan, are you sure?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

Then I picked up Rachel's letter.

“But I need to hear what happened.””

As I left the office, Robert called after me.

“Mr. Miller!””

I turned.

He held up another envelope.

“There is one final document. Michael instructed me to give it to you only if Vanessa confessed to being present at the accident.””

I took it.

My name was written across the front.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Rachel sitting in a hospital bed.

She was alive.

Her face was pale, and a bandage covered her forehead.

The date printed beneath the photograph was two days after the accident.

I looked up.

“Where was this taken?””

Robert swallowed.

“At a private clinic.””

My hands began trembling.

“Rachel survived the accident?””

May you like

Robert nodded.

“And according to the records, she lived for another thirty-six hours.””
