Chapter 7: What Really Happened on That Rainy Tuesday

Nobody spoke.

Even the guests who had been whispering throughout the ceremony had fallen silent.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You were there?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Ethan, please sit down.””

“Answer me.””

“I was there.””

“Where?””

“On the road.””

My hands began shaking.

“The road where Rachel's car crashed?””

Vanessa nodded.

I looked toward Daniel.

He closed his eyes.

For six years, I had remembered that rainy Tuesday as a collection of disconnected images.

Rachel kissing Nora goodbye.

A phone call from an unfamiliar number.

A police officer standing on my porch.

A hospital corridor that smelled of disinfectant.

And a doctor telling me that my wife hadn't survived.

I had never imagined that Vanessa had been part of that night.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Vanessa looked at the guests.

“Not here.””

I stepped toward her.

“You don't get to choose where I hear the truth.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Rachel called me.””

“Why?””

“She wanted to meet.””

“About what?””

“The records she had discovered.””

Daniel interrupted.

“That's not entirely true.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Don't.””

He turned toward me.

“Rachel had already reported the fraudulent transactions. Vanessa contacted her because she wanted the original files returned.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you threaten her?””

“No.””

Daniel opened the envelope and removed a printed email.

“Then explain this.””

He read aloud.

*If you give those files to the authorities, your husband and daughter will learn things about you that you cannot take back.*

My stomach tightened.

“That was your message?””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I was angry.””

“You threatened my wife?””

“I wanted the documents!””

“What documents?””

“The financial records.””

“Why?””

“Because they could have sent me to prison.””

I stared at her.

“So you threatened Rachel to protect yourself.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn't know she would die!””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“You followed her.””

“I was trying to get the files!””

“And when she refused?””

Vanessa covered her face.

I grabbed the back of a pew.

“What happened?””

She took a long breath.

“It was raining. Rachel was driving. I was following her in my car.””

“Why?””

“She had the flash drive. I thought if I caught up with her, I could convince her to give it back.””

My voice cracked.

“Then?””

“She pulled over near the intersection.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered that intersection from the police report.

A sharp curve.

A poorly lit stretch of road.

A traffic signal that had malfunctioned during heavy rain.

Vanessa continued.

“We argued. She told me she was going to the police the next morning.””

“Were you alone?””

She hesitated.

Then looked at Daniel.

He answered.

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“Who else was there?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Martin Hayes.””

I looked at the doctor.

He had been standing near the back of the chapel.

Now he looked as though he wanted to disappear.

“You were there?””

Dr. Hayes swallowed.

“I was in another vehicle.””

“What did you do?””

“Nothing.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“That's not true!””

The doctor flinched.

She pointed at him.

“You told me to leave her alone! You said you would handle it!””

Claire stepped forward.

“Everyone needs to stop speaking until we have the proper authorities present.””

But I couldn't stop.

Not yet.

“Did Rachel crash because of you?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“She lost control of the car.””

“Were you chasing her?””

“I was trying to stop her!””

“Did you touch her vehicle?””

“No!””

Daniel placed the flash drive on the pew.

“Ethan, the recording explains what happened.””

He connected it to his phone.

A small audio file appeared.

*RACHEL — FINAL RECORDING.*

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Rachel's voice filled the chapel.

“Daniel, if you're hearing this, I couldn't get the files to you.””

My knees weakened.

Her voice sounded exactly as I remembered it.

Warm.

Slightly breathless.

Alive.

She continued.

“Vanessa came to the meeting. Martin was with her. They want the original records, but I'm not giving them back.””

A pause.

Then a sound like a car door closing.

Rachel spoke again.

“I'm scared. I should have told Ethan everything. I should have told him about the baby.””

I covered my mouth.

Then came a different voice.

Vanessa's.

“Rachel, get out of the car.””

Rachel answered.

“Leave me alone.””

A door slammed.

There was shouting.

Then a sound of tires on wet pavement.

The recording ended abruptly.

I stood frozen.

“That doesn't tell us whether she caused the crash,” Claire said carefully.

Daniel nodded.

“There's another file.””

He opened it.

This one contained a video.

The image was dark and shaky.

A timestamp showed the date of Rachel's accident.

The camera appeared to be positioned inside another vehicle.

A silver sedan was visible ahead.

Rachel's car.

Behind it was a black SUV.

Vanessa's vehicle.

The SUV moved closer.

Then its headlights flashed.

The silver sedan swerved.

A moment later, it disappeared beyond the curve.

The video stopped.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You chased her.””

“I didn't mean for that to happen!””

“Did you hit her car?””

She shook her head.

“I don't remember!””

“You don't remember?””

“It was raining! Everything happened so fast!””

Daniel looked at her.

“You told the police you weren't there.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“I was afraid!””

I stepped backward.

Six years.

Six years of birthdays without Rachel.

Six years of watching Nora search for her mother in every crowded room.

Six years of believing a wet road had taken the person I loved.

And the woman I had almost married had been hiding the truth.

But something still didn't make sense.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Why did you have this video?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because Rachel sent it to me before she died. I received it after the accident.””

“Why didn't you give it to the police?””

His eyes filled.

“I did.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I gave them the original recording. They said it wasn't enough to identify the driver conclusively.””

I looked at Claire.

She nodded slowly.

“That's something investigators can review.””

I turned back to Daniel.

“Then why did you wait six years to tell me?””

He looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.

“Because Rachel asked me to protect Nora.””

“And you thought hiding everything would protect her?””

“No. I thought keeping the evidence away from the people who wanted it would.””

I stared at him.

“Who wanted it?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at Dr. Hayes.

“Both of them.””

The chapel doors opened again.

Two police officers entered.

One approached Vanessa.

The other walked toward Dr. Hayes.

Claire stepped aside and showed them the documents.

Vanessa started screaming.

“You can't arrest me! I didn't kill anyone!””

The officer took her arm.

“We need you to come with us and answer some questions.””

She turned toward me.

“Ethan! Please!””

I didn't move.

She looked at Nora, who had returned with Ryan.

“Tell your father I loved him!””

Nora pressed herself against Ryan.

Then she said something so quietly that only those nearest her could hear.

“You didn't love Daddy. You wanted him to stop loving Mommy.””

Vanessa's face collapsed.

And as the officers led her away, Daniel turned to me.

“Ethan, there's one more thing Rachel left for you.””

He reached into his jacket.

It was a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front in Rachel's handwriting.

May you like

And underneath it were six words:

*Open this when you know the truth.*
