Chapter 3: The Plan Behind the Wedding

The word seemed to hang in the air.

Custody.

I had spent six years raising Nora after Rachel's death.

I had attended every parent-teacher conference, every school performance, every doctor's appointment.

I had learned how to braid hair from online videos.

I knew which vegetables she hated and which stuffed animal had to sleep beside her.

And now someone was telling me that the woman I had almost married wanted to use a fake pregnancy to take my daughter away from me.

I couldn't make sense of it.

“Dr. Hayes,” I said, “explain.””

Vanessa rushed toward me.

“Ethan, don't listen to him!””

Ryan blocked her path.

“Stay where you are.””

She pointed at him.

“You don't know anything!””

“I know enough.””

Dr. Hayes spoke again.

“Vanessa contacted my office several months ago. She asked about documentation related to pregnancy, maternity leave, and medical expenses.””

“Why?””

“She said she was involved in a complicated family situation and needed records to protect herself.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Protect yourself from what?””

She said nothing.

The doctor continued.

“Initially, I believed she was dealing with a difficult personal matter. She paid for the prosthetic and several consultations. Later, she asked whether I could create documents indicating a pregnancy that had ended in a medical emergency.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“You agreed?””

“I refused to falsify medical records. I also informed her that the prosthetic was not medical evidence of pregnancy.””

Vanessa shouted, “You promised you wouldn't tell anyone!””

“I never promised to participate in fraud.””

The line crackled.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Mr. Miller, she also asked me whether a pregnant fiancée could be considered a more stable household environment in a custody dispute.””

I stared at the floor.

The wedding guests were no longer whispering.

They were listening.

Vanessa had apparently forgotten that 150 people were standing around us.

“Ethan,” she said, her voice trembling, “I can explain.””

I turned.

“Then explain.””

She looked at Nora.

Then at me.

“Your daughter has been difficult since I moved in.””

Nora's face fell.

I stepped between them.

“Don't.””

“She doesn't respect me.””

“She's eight.””

“She hides things. She listens to conversations. She tells you lies about me.””

I felt something cold move through my chest.

“What conversations?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I'm not going to stand here and be interrogated like a criminal.””

“You just admitted you were planning to marry me before revealing you weren't pregnant.””

“I was trying to save our relationship!””

“You were trying to take my daughter?””

“No!””

“Then why did the doctor mention custody?””

She looked away.

That was answer enough.

Ryan took the phone from my hand and placed it on speaker.

“Doctor, can you tell us whether Vanessa has any other medical records connected to this arrangement?””

“Yes. I have copies of the invoices and the correspondence. I also have a written statement from Vanessa explaining why she wanted the prosthetic.””

My heart hammered.

“What did she write?””

Dr. Hayes hesitated.

“She said she needed to make the pregnancy believable until the wedding.””

“Why until the wedding?””

“Because she believed marriage would make it easier to establish herself as Nora's legal guardian if something happened to you.””

I felt the chapel tilt.

“If something happened to me?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“He misunderstood.””

I looked directly at her.

“What were you planning?””

She covered her mouth.

Ryan stepped closer.

“Answer him.””

Finally, Vanessa whispered, “I wanted security.””

I laughed without humor.

“You had a home. You had a family. I was giving you everything.””

“You were giving me a life built around Rachel!””

“You knew I was a widower when we met.””

“I thought things would change after marriage.””

“They would have changed. We would have built something together.””

“You don't understand!””

“Then explain it!””

She looked toward the guests, realizing that her carefully arranged wedding had become a public disaster.

Then she said something I would never forget.

“I needed Nora to become attached to me.””

My daughter flinched.

I lowered my voice.

“What?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I thought if she believed she was getting a little brother or sister, she would stop seeing me as an outsider.””

Nora's lips trembled.

“But you said the baby would be my real family,” she whispered.

Vanessa stared at her.

“I never said that.””

“Yes, you did.””

“No, I didn't.””

Nora reached for my hand.

“You told me Daddy would have a new family and I would have to go somewhere else.””

I felt my heart break.

Vanessa's face hardened.

“She misunderstood.””

I knelt beside my daughter.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Nora took a shaky breath.

“Two weeks ago, I heard her talking on the phone in the laundry room. She said that once you were married, she would make sure I went to live with Grandma.””

I looked up.

“Which grandma?””

“Mommy's mother.””

Rachel's mother, Margaret, lived three hours away.

She adored Nora, but she had never wanted to raise a child full-time after losing her daughter.

“Why would Vanessa say that?”” I asked.

Nora wiped her nose.

“She said Grandma would believe her because she was going to be the baby's mother.””

I stood slowly.

Vanessa looked cornered.

“You are twisting everything!””

“Then tell me what you said to my daughter.””

She didn't answer.

Instead, she reached into the folds of her wedding dress and pulled out a second phone.

Ryan noticed immediately.

“Ethan.””

Vanessa pressed the screen.

A message appeared.

It was addressed to someone saved as *M.*

The most recent message read:

*The ceremony is ruined. We need to move the plan forward tonight.*

I reached for the phone.

Vanessa pulled it away.

“Give me that.””

She backed toward the chapel doors.

“Don't touch me!””

Then she looked directly at Nora.

“You should have kept your mouth shut.””

The doors opened behind her.

A man in a gray suit stepped inside.

I recognized him from the photograph.

Dr. Martin Hayes.

But he wasn't alone.

A woman in a dark blue coat stood beside him, holding a thick folder.

She looked at me.

“Mr. Miller?””

“Yes?””

“My name is Claire Donovan. I'm an attorney.””

May you like

She glanced at Vanessa.

“And I believe you need to know who M. really is.””
