Chapter 8: Rachel's Last Letter
I didn't open the letter at the chapel.
I couldn't.
Not with police officers questioning witnesses, photographers being asked to surrender their footage, and strangers whispering about my failed wedding.
I took Nora home with Ryan and Claire.
The wedding cake remained untouched.
The flowers were left beneath the arch.
My tuxedo still smelled of the expensive cologne Vanessa had chosen for me.
But when I walked through the front door, all I wanted was to sit on the living room floor and hold my daughter.
Nora followed me upstairs.
She stopped outside her bedroom.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
“What's wrong?””
“Are you mad at me?””
The question broke something inside me.
I knelt.
“Why would I be mad at you?””
“Because I hurt Vanessa.””
I held her shoulders.
“Sweetheart, you didn't hurt her.””
“But I stabbed her.””
“You used the pin because you believed something was wrong. We'll talk about what happened, and we'll make sure you never have to feel responsible for fixing an adult's problems again.””
She looked down.
“I thought if I showed everyone, they would believe me.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“I should have believed you before.””
Nora began crying.
“I didn't want you to marry someone who didn't love us.””
I kissed her forehead.
“I'm not going anywhere.””
She held me tightly.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered:
“Can we call Grandma?””
I nodded.
“Of course.””
Margaret answered on the second ring.
“Ethan?””
“I'm home with Nora.””
“Oh, thank God.””
“Mom, we need to talk about Rachel.””
She went quiet.
“I know.””
“Why didn't you tell me she was pregnant?””
Margaret began crying.
“Because Rachel made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
“That I wouldn't tell you until you were ready.””
I closed my eyes.
“Ready for what?””
“For the truth about the night she died.””
I looked toward the envelope sitting on my desk.
“Margaret, I have her letter.””
A small sound came through the phone.
“Oh, Ethan.””
“Do you know what's inside?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
She took a shaky breath.
“Rachel discovered that someone had been using her identity to authorize medical payments. She believed the person responsible had access to confidential family information.””
“Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Rachel was afraid Vanessa would come after Nora.””
I gripped the phone.
“Did you know Vanessa was involved in the accident?””
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
Then she whispered:
“I knew she was following Rachel.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
“I received a call from Rachel that night. She told me she was frightened. She said someone was behind her.””
“Why didn't you call me?””
“I tried. Your phone was switched off. You were working late.””
I remembered that night.
I had been in a meeting.
When I finally checked my phone, there were three missed calls from Rachel.
I had called back.
She hadn't answered.
An hour later, the police arrived.
I sat down heavily.
“Margaret, I need the truth.””
“I know.””
“Why did you keep her phone?””
“Because I found it in a box of her belongings that was returned from the police department. I couldn't bear to open it.””
I swallowed.
“Why did you give it to Nora?””
“I didn't.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Daniel brought it to my house. He said he had recovered the phone from an old storage unit. He wanted to make sure the recording was preserved.””
I looked toward the hallway.
“Then why did Nora say you had it?””
“Because I gave it to her after she found it. She asked me what happened to her mother, and I thought she deserved to know something.””
I closed my eyes.
I couldn't blame Margaret for wanting to protect her granddaughter.
But I couldn't understand how so many adults had allowed an eight-year-old to carry secrets that should never have been hers.
After ending the call, I sat at my desk.
The envelope waited.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter written on pale blue stationery.
The first line made my vision blur.
*My dearest Ethan,*
*If you're reading this, then I wasn't brave enough to tell you everything while I was alive. I'm sorry.*
I stopped.
I pressed the paper against my forehead.
Then I continued.
Rachel explained that she had discovered the fraudulent medical records several months before her death.
She had also discovered that Vanessa, then using another name, had been involved in a network that helped people obtain false medical documentation.
Rachel had initially intended to report only the financial fraud.
But then she discovered something more disturbing.
The records included a list of families whose personal information had been accessed without permission.
Our family was on that list.
Rachel had found evidence that someone had been monitoring our finances, our insurance policies, and our home address.
She suspected Vanessa had been gathering information for years.
Then I reached the paragraph that made my hands go numb.
*Ethan, there is something I need you to understand about our second baby. I was five weeks pregnant when I discovered the fraud. I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid the people involved would use the pregnancy against us.*
I swallowed hard.
The next paragraph was even more painful.
**I know you will wonder whether I was hiding something from you. I wasn't. The baby was ours.
I had already imagined Nora holding her little brother or sister. I had even chosen a name.**
I began crying.
Rachel had chosen a name.
A name I had never heard.
I continued reading.
*If it's a girl, I want to call her Lily. Nora likes that name because she says flowers make people happy.*
I covered my mouth.
Nora had been right.
She had once told me she wanted a little sister named Lily.
I had forgotten.
Then came the final paragraph.
**Daniel has a copy of the original video. If anything happens to me, he will know where to find it. Please don't blame yourself for not seeing what I saw.
I loved you. I trusted you. And I wanted our children to grow up knowing that their father would always protect them.**
At the bottom was one final sentence.
*There is one person who can explain why Vanessa came after our family. His name is Michael Cole.*
I stared at the name.
Michael Cole.
Vanessa's supposed father.
I had met him once at a restaurant, shortly after our engagement.
He had been charming, polite, and unusually interested in my life insurance policy.
I remembered him asking whether Nora would inherit the house.
At the time, I thought he was simply being protective of his daughter.
I picked up my phone and searched the name.
Several results appeared.
One headline caught my attention.
*FORMER MEDICAL EXECUTIVE LINKED TO INSURANCE FRAUD INVESTIGATION DIES IN PRIVATE RESIDENCE.*
The article was dated three months earlier.
I opened it.
Michael Cole had died suddenly.
The report mentioned that he had been under investigation before his death.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*Ethan, my name is Michael Cole's former attorney. I have something that belonged to Rachel. It concerns Vanessa, and it concerns the accident. Call me immediately.*
I stared at the message.
May you like
Then another one arrived.
*Do not tell Daniel. He doesn't know the whole story.*
