Chapter 9: The Memory They Stole

I stared at the document in Richard’s hand.

My signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

But I had no memory of ever signing it.

That scared me more than anything else.

Because there were only two possibilities.

Either Richard was lying.

Or someone had taken a piece of my life away from me.

And suddenly, every strange moment from the past three years started coming back.

The headaches.

The missing hours.

The conversations Emily said I didn’t remember.

The nights I woke up feeling like something was wrong but couldn’t explain why.

I had always blamed grief.

I had blamed losing Emily.

I had blamed stress.

But what if I had been missing something much bigger?

“What did you do to me?””

My voice echoed through the abandoned building.

Richard smiled.

Not like a villain in a movie.

Like a scientist looking at a result he had spent years waiting for.

“That’s the wrong question.””

I stepped closer.

“The wrong question?””

“Yes.””

He tapped the folder.

“The right question is why your wife never told you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about Emily.””

Richard looked amused.

“You still protect her.””

“She’s your victim.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She was my greatest disappointment.””

Behind the glass, Lily watched us.

She looked scared.

But she was listening.

I needed to get her out.

That was all that mattered.

“Open the door.””

Richard ignored me.

“Do you know what Emily did?””

I didn’t answer.

“She destroyed years of research because she couldn’t accept what Lily represented.””

My hands curled into fists.

“My daughter is not research.””

Richard smiled.

“That’s exactly what she would say.””

The lights above us flickered.

Thomas stepped beside me.

“Richard, this is over.””

Richard finally looked at him.

“Thomas.””

His voice became colder.

“You always were the weak one.””

Thomas’s face tightened.

“You used me.””

“I gave you a purpose.””

“You destroyed my family.””

Richard laughed softly.

“No. Your family was already broken. I just showed everyone where the cracks were.””

I looked at Thomas.

“What does he mean?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That was the problem.

Everyone always had a piece of the truth.

Never the whole thing.

“Tell me,” I demanded.

Thomas looked exhausted.

“I was there the night of the accident.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t know everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

Thomas looked at Richard.

“I was the one who drove Emily away that night.””

My anger exploded.

“You what?””

“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””

“You put my wife in a car.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Richard followed us.””

Everything went quiet.

“The accident…”

Thomas nodded.

“Was Richard.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

He simply watched.

Like he was waiting for this moment.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Thomas looked at me.

“I found Emily after the crash.””

My chest tightened.

“She was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe she died.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“She made me promise.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She told me if Richard thought she was alive, Lily would never be safe.””

I looked at the glass room.

At my daughter.

“So you protected Lily by letting me lose my wife?””

Thomas looked away.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Even though I understood it.

Even though I knew the danger was real.

A part of me still wanted to scream.

Because three years of pain couldn’t disappear because someone had a reason.

Richard stepped forward.

“This is what you never understood, Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“You think love is enough.””

He pointed toward Lily.

“You think raising her makes her yours.””

“She is mine.””

“You changed diapers.””

“You weren’t there.””

“You read bedtime stories.””

“You weren’t there.””

“You kissed her when she had nightmares.””

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

“But you don’t know what she is.””

I stared at him.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s proof.””

“Of what?””

“That human genetics can be rewritten.””

I felt sick.

“You’re insane.””

Richard smiled.

“Maybe.””

He looked at Lily.

“But I was right.””

I moved toward the control room.

“Open the door.””

Richard pressed a button.

The glass door unlocked.

For one second, relief hit me.

Then the alarm started.

Red lights flashed.

Thomas grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“This is what he wants.””

Richard watched us.

“You’re smarter than you look, Thomas.””

I ignored him.

I walked toward Lily.

“Daddy.””

Her voice broke me.

I ran.

I opened the door.

And the moment I reached her, she wrapped her arms around me.

I held her so tightly I was afraid I would never let go.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

She cried into my shoulder.

“I knew you would come.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’m never leaving you again.””

Behind us, Richard spoke.

“You should ask her what she remembers.””

I turned.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“Ask your daughter.””

I looked down.

“Lily?””

She held onto me.

“What?””

“What did he do?””

She became quiet.

Too quiet.

“Lily?””

She looked at Richard.

Then back at me.

“I don’t know.””

My heart sank.

“What do you mean?””

“I don’t remember coming here.””

The room went cold.

I looked at Richard.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

Lily touched her head.

“I woke up here.””

I knelt in front of her.

“Sweetheart, what’s the last thing you remember?””

She frowned.

Then whispered:

“The church.””

I waited.

“I remember you being angry.””

My heart broke.

“Lily…”

“I remember thinking you didn’t believe me.””

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she said:

“And then I heard Mommy’s voice.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“Mommy told me not to be scared.””

My breathing stopped.

“Mommy?””

“She was there.””

I looked at Emily’s name on my phone.

The call had ended.

“Where?””

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

“She came to get me.””

My blood ran cold.

“What do you mean?””

Richard smiled.

“Now you’re asking the right questions.””

I turned toward him.

“What did you do to Emily?””

His smile disappeared.

Because for the first time, I saw something in his eyes.

Fear.

“She was never supposed to come here.””

The alarm continued screaming.

The building shook.

Then the lights went out.

Total darkness.

A second later, emergency lights turned on.

And someone appeared at the end of the hallway.

A woman.

Holding a flashlight.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that silhouette.

I knew that voice.

“Daniel.””

Emily stepped into the light.

Alive.

Standing there.

Looking exactly like the woman I had lost.

But she wasn’t alone.

Someone was standing behind her.

Someone I never expected.

Someone who made Richard take a step backward.

Emily looked at me.

Then at Lily.

“I’m sorry.””

My eyes filled with anger and relief at the same time.

“You have a lot to explain.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Richard moved toward her.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

Emily looked at him.

“You should have left my daughter alone.””

His expression hardened.

“Your daughter?””

Emily stepped beside me.

“Yes.””

Then she said something that made Richard’s face change completely.

“Because Lily was never your experiment.””

A silence filled the room.

Emily looked at me.

“Daniel, there’s something I need you to know.””

I held Lily’s hand.

“What?””

Emily took a breath.

“The document Richard showed you…”

She looked at the folder.

“It was real.””

My heart sank.

“But he changed one important detail.””

I stared.

“What detail?””

Emily looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“The person who signed it wasn’t you.””

She paused.

“It was someone pretending to be you.””

I looked at Richard.

Then Thomas.

Then Emily.

“Who?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

And the answer destroyed the last piece of the life I thought I understood.

“The person who stole your identity…”

She swallowed.

“Was standing beside you at your wedding.””

I looked around the room.

And slowly realized the truth.

The biggest betrayal wasn’t from a stranger.

It wasn’t from Richard.

It wasn’t even from Vanessa.

It was from someone who had been part of my family for years.

Someone I trusted completely.

May you like

Then Emily whispered the name.

And everything finally made sense.
