Chapter 5: The Letter That Changed Everything

The paper sat on the altar between us.

A single folded page.

A simple piece of paper.

Yet everyone in that church looked at it like it was a bomb waiting to explode.

Because everyone knew it contained something that could destroy whatever was left of my life.

I stared at Emily’s name written across the top.

My fingers hovered above it.

Three years ago, I would have given anything to hold something written by my wife again.

A note.

A message.

Anything.

Now, the one thing I wanted most terrified me.

“Daniel,” Emily whispered through the phone.

Her voice was weak.

“Please.””

I looked at the screen.

“Why shouldn’t I read it?””

Silence.

“Emily?””

Finally, she answered.

“Because I wrote it when I thought I was never going to see you again.””

My chest tightened.

“Then I need to read it.””

“No.””

The desperation in her voice stopped me.

Not because she was trying to hide something.

Because she sounded like someone begging me not to reopen an old wound.

Thomas looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get to decide what I deserve.””

His face fell.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice grew louder.

“You watched me fall apart.””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“You watched Lily ask for her mother every night.””

“I know.””

“You stood beside me at the funeral.””

“I know.””

“You hugged me and told me everything would be okay.””

His eyes filled with shame.

“I know.””

I hated that answer.

Because everyone who had betrayed me seemed to know exactly what they had done.

And they had done nothing to stop it.

I grabbed the letter.

Emily’s voice immediately came through the phone.

“Daniel, wait.””

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Emily’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that used to appear on grocery lists stuck to our refrigerator.

The same handwriting that filled birthday cards for Lily.

The first line made my breath catch.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then something went wrong.*

I stopped.

My hands shook.

I continued.

*I need you to know one thing before you hate me. Everything I did was to protect our daughter.*

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

Her small face was full of fear.

I kept reading.

*I found out something about my family. Something I should have discovered years ago. Something involving people I trusted.*

My eyes moved toward Thomas.

He looked away.

*The person you believe is helping you is not who they appear to be.*

I stopped.

The words were almost identical to what Emily had said on the phone.

I looked at Vanessa.

She stood completely still.

*I wanted to tell you. I tried. But every time I got close, I realized someone was watching us.*

My heart pounded.

Watching us.

*The night of the accident, I was not running away from you. I was running away from someone who wanted to hurt Lily.*

I stopped reading.

“Lily?””

My daughter looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?””

I forced myself to breathe.

“Go sit with Marcus for a minute.””

She looked worried.

“But—”

“Please.””

She slowly walked over to Marcus.

He placed a protective arm around her.

I looked back at the letter.

*I know you will be angry. You should be. I know you will feel betrayed. But Daniel, please believe me when I say I never stopped loving you.*

My vision blurred.

I hated how much I wanted to believe those words.

I hated how much a part of me still loved her.

*I left because I discovered the truth about Lily’s birth.*

I froze.

The room became silent.

Lily’s birth.

My eyes moved down the page.

*The secret we kept from everyone was supposed to protect her. But someone found out. Someone who should never have known.*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Thomas.

“What secret?””

Nobody answered.

I turned to Thomas.

“What secret?””

He swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

He looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying this weight for years.

“Lily was sick when she was born.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

Emily’s voice came through the phone.

“Daniel…”

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas continued.

“Emily and I found out something unusual during the first months after Lily was born.””

“During the first months?””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t I know?””

His face showed regret.

“Because Emily thought telling you would put you in danger.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My own wife thought I was too dangerous to know?””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“She thought the people looking for answers would come after you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What answers?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa finally said:

“The truth about who Lily’s biological father is.””

The words hit the room like a gunshot.

I stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked like she regretted speaking.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“No, you don’t get to drop something like that and stay quiet.””

My voice cracked.

“Are you saying Lily isn’t my daughter?””

Marcus looked at me.

Even he didn’t know what to say.

Lily was across the room.

She couldn’t hear everything.

Thank God.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Thomas.

Thomas looked at the floor.

Finally, Emily spoke.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

I put the phone closer.

“I’m listening.””

“Lily is your daughter.””

Relief hit me for half a second.

Then confusion returned.

“Then what is this?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“When Lily was born, we discovered something about her DNA.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She carried a genetic marker.””

I waited.

“What does that mean?””

Emily hesitated.

“It means someone connected to your family was involved in something they shouldn’t have been.””

I looked at Thomas.

His face went pale.

“Your family?”” I asked.

Emily didn’t answer.

I already knew.

The silence said enough.

I looked at Thomas.

“What did you do?””

His head snapped up.

“Nothing.””

“Then why are you involved?””

“Because Emily asked me for help.””

“When?””

“The night she disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because she found out who was after Lily.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked terrified.

Then the church doors suddenly opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Everyone turned.

She was older.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was familiar.

I had seen her many times before.

She was the woman who had helped Vanessa organize the wedding.

The woman who had brought flowers.

The woman who had hugged me and called me “family.””

Vanessa’s mother.

She looked at the scene.

At the letter.

At the box.

Then she sighed.

“I was hoping we had more time.””

My body stiffened.

“What are you doing here?””

She didn’t answer me.

She looked directly at Vanessa.

“It’s over.””

Vanessa started crying.

“No.””

Her mother shook her head.

“You knew this day would come.””

I looked between them.

“What is going on?””

The older woman slowly walked forward.

Then she said something that made my entire world collapse.

“Daniel, your wife didn’t disappear because someone was trying to hurt her.””

She looked at Emily’s name on the letter.

“She disappeared because she found out what we did.””

The air left my lungs.

“What you did?””

The woman stared at me.

“Yes.””

She paused.

“And if you want the truth about Lily, you need to know what happened the night of the accident.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Emily whispered through the phone:

“Daniel…”

Her voice was filled with fear.

“Don’t let her tell you first.””

I looked at Vanessa’s mother.

“What are you hiding?””

The woman smiled sadly.

Not cruelly.

Almost like she felt sorry for me.

Then she reached into her purse.

And pulled out a photograph.

She placed it on the altar beside Emily’s letter.

“Everything started with this picture.””

I looked down.

And my heart stopped.

Because the photograph showed my family…

Years before I ever met Vanessa.

And standing beside Emily was someone I recognized immediately.

Someone who should never have been there.

May you like

Someone who was supposed to be a stranger.

But wasn’t.
