Chapter 7: The Price of the Truth

My hands went numb around the phone.

The picture stayed on the screen.

My daughter.

My six-year-old little girl.

Sitting alone in the backseat of a car.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were wide.

But she wasn’t crying.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Lily cried when she was hurt.

She cried when she scraped her knee.

She cried when thunderstorms shook the windows.

She cried when she thought I was angry with her.

But in that picture, she looked silent.

Like someone had convinced her that crying wouldn’t help.

“Daniel?””

Emily’s voice pulled me back.

“Is she there?””

I couldn’t answer.

My throat closed.

“Daniel!””

I forced the words out.

“They have her.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then Emily whispered:

“No.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Let me see.””

I moved the phone away.

“No.””

“Daniel, please.””

“You knew this could happen.””

Her face changed.

“I knew someone was watching us. I didn’t know they would take her.””

“That’s convenient.””

The words came out colder than I intended.

But I didn’t care anymore.

My daughter was gone.

Everything else could wait.

I turned toward Thomas.

“Who has her?””

He looked at the picture.

The color drained from his face.

“Oh no.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“Who?””

He didn’t fight me.

He looked terrified.

“Richard.””

The name hung in the air.

The man from the photograph.

The man connected to my father.

The man who had somehow been part of my family’s story before I even knew there was a story.

“Where is he?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

I pushed him back.

“You all keep saying you’re protecting me while my daughter gets taken.””

My voice broke.

“You failed.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Give me everything.””

She stared at me.

“What?””

“Everything you know.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“Now.””

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to refuse.

Then she nodded.

She reached into the hidden pocket of her wedding dress and pulled out a small envelope.

I stared.

“You had more?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

“You were carrying this the whole time?””

“I was afraid someone would take it.””

I opened it.

Inside were several pages.

Names.

Dates.

Locations.

And one photograph.

A photograph of Lily.

Taken months earlier.

My stomach twisted.

“She was watching her.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Richard was.””

I looked up.

“How do you know?””

“Because I found his people following her.””

My anger returned.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You never tried hard enough.””

Her eyes lowered.

Maybe because she knew I was right.

Maybe because she knew there was no excuse anymore.

“What happened after Emily disappeared?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“I found her.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You found Emily?””

She nodded.

“After the accident.””

My entire body froze.

“You knew where she was?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because she was hiding from Richard.””

I looked at the phone.

Emily was silent.

“Is that true?””

After several seconds, she answered.

“Yes.””

My heart hurt.

Even after everything.

Even after finding out she was alive.

I still hated that she had left me.

“I thought you died.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Because the person who caused the accident was someone close to us.””

I looked at Thomas.

Then Vanessa.

“Who?””

Emily didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Tell me.””

Her voice became quiet.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“Know what?””

“Who was helping Richard.””

The church fell silent.

“She wasn’t working alone.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Who?””

Emily whispered:

“Your brother.””

My body went still.

I turned toward Thomas.

He looked like he had been punched.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“Did you help Richard?””

“No.””

“Were you there the night of the accident?””

His face changed.

That was enough.

“You were.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The confession hit harder than anything else.

Marcus would have been shocked.

My mother would have been destroyed.

But I felt something else.

A strange emptiness.

Because somehow, deep down, I already knew.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

“Everything.””

I stepped closer.

“You let me believe my wife died.””

“I was trying to get her away.””

“From who?””

“From Richard.””

I shook my head.

“This makes no sense.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Richard wanted the research file.””

“What research file?””

“The one Emily found.””

I looked at the documents.

“The file about Lily?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why does a file about my daughter matter so much?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Lily was the only successful case.””

My stomach dropped.

Successful case.

The words made my skin crawl.

“She’s not an experiment.””

“I know.””

“Don’t talk about my daughter like she’s a project.””

“I’m not.””

“Then explain.””

Thomas looked at Lily’s picture.

“Richard’s research was supposed to predict and prevent certain genetic diseases.””

“And?””

“And the first trials failed.””

My hands tightened.

“Except Lily.””

Thomas nodded.

“Except Lily.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why does Richard want her?””

Thomas looked toward the church doors.

“Because he believes Lily has something inside her that nobody else has.””

I stared at him.

“My daughter is a child.””

“I know.””

“She’s not some secret formula.””

“I know.””

“Then why is everyone treating her like one?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer that could make sense.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, no picture.

Only an address.

And a time.

*Midnight. Old Hale Research Facility. Come alone.*

My blood ran cold.

Thomas saw the message.

“No.””

“What?””

“You can’t go there.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s where Richard kept the original files.””

I looked at him.

“And my daughter.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t go alone.””

The old me would have listened.

The old me would have trusted.

But the old me was the reason Lily was gone.

The old me believed people because I wanted to believe them.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””

Pain crossed her face.

I didn’t enjoy seeing it.

But I couldn’t let that change anything.

I looked at Thomas.

“You’re coming with me.””

He nodded.

“I figured you’d say that.””

I looked at the phone.

At Lily’s picture.

At the time.

Midnight.

Only a few hours away.

Then Emily spoke.

“Daniel.””

I put the phone to my ear.

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“Before you go there, you need to know something.””

“What?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Richard didn’t take Lily because of the research.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Emily whispered:

“Because he knows the truth about her birth.””

My heart stopped.

“What truth?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“The truth I was trying to hide from you.””

I waited.

Then she said:

“Daniel…”

“You are not Lily’s biological father.””

The world went silent.

I couldn’t hear the church.

I couldn’t hear the people around me.

I couldn’t even hear myself breathe.

Because the one person I trusted most had just confirmed my greatest fear.

The daughter I had raised.

The child I loved more than anything.

Might not be mine by blood.

Then Emily said the words that shattered everything.

“But that’s not the secret Richard wants you to discover.””

A pause.

May you like

“The real secret is who her biological father is.””

And before I could ask, the call suddenly disconnected.
