Chapter 6: The Stranger in the Photograph
I stared at the photograph until my eyes started burning.
The edges were faded.
The colors had softened with age.
But the faces were clear.
Emily was standing in our old backyard, smiling as she held baby Lily.
Beside her was Thomas.
Beside Thomas was Vanessa’s mother.
And behind them, half hidden near the doorway of our house, was a man I had never seen before.
A man who looked at the camera with a cold, unreadable expression.
A man who somehow looked familiar.
I turned the photograph over.
There was a date written on the back.
Eight years ago.
Eight years.
Before Vanessa came into my life.
Before I knew her name.
Before she stood in front of me wearing a wedding dress and pretending to carry my child.
I looked at Vanessa’s mother.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
“Who is the man in this picture?””
Vanessa’s mother slowly sat down in the nearest pew.
For the first time since I had met her, she looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had spent years carrying a secret that was finally too heavy.
“His name was Richard Hale.””
I frowned.
The name meant nothing.
“Who is Richard Hale?””
Thomas looked away.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
And that reaction told me everything.
They knew him.
“You all knew him.””
Vanessa’s mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t I?””
She looked at me.
“Because Emily didn’t want you to.””
I felt anger rise again.
“Stop saying Emily wanted things hidden from me.””
“But she did.””
“No.””
My voice echoed through the church.
“My wife trusted me.””
“She loved you.””
“Then why did everyone around her know more about my family than I did?””
Nobody answered.
That was the worst part.
Because silence was becoming their confession.
I held up the photograph.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa’s mother looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Richard Hale was your father’s business partner.””
I froze.
“My father?””
I hadn’t heard that name connected to anything serious in years.
My father had died when I was young.
I remembered him as a quiet man who worked long hours and came home smelling like coffee and gasoline.
“He knew my father?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Her eyes lowered.
“They built a company together.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“It does when you know what kind of company it was.””
The room became colder.
“What kind?””
She hesitated.
“A medical research company.””
I stared at her.
“And what does that have to do with Lily?””
Thomas finally spoke.
“Everything.””
I turned toward him.
“You have five seconds before I lose my patience.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
But he didn’t look like someone preparing an explanation.
He looked like someone preparing a confession.
“Your father and Richard were working on experimental genetic research.””
I laughed quietly.
“This sounds insane.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed at the photograph.
“I just found out my dead wife is alive, my fiancée faked a pregnancy, and my family has been hiding some secret involving my daughter.””
My voice broke.
“So don’t tell me what sounds insane.””
Nobody spoke.
I continued.
“What happened?””
Thomas looked at Vanessa’s mother.
She nodded.
“Richard wanted to continue research that was considered unethical.””
“What kind of research?””
Thomas answered.
“Genetic modification.””
The words sounded unreal.
Like something from a movie.
Not my life.
Not my daughter.
“Why would Emily know about this?””
“Because she discovered the files.””
My eyes moved toward the phone.
“Emily?””
She answered quietly.
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“When?””
“After Lily was born.””
“Why were you looking?””
A pause.
“Because Lily got sick.””
I looked toward my daughter.
She was still sitting beside Marcus.
Unaware.
“When?””
“When she was three months old.””
I remembered.
I remembered hospital visits.
Doctors who couldn’t explain why Lily had strange symptoms.
I remembered Emily crying in the bathroom.
I remembered being told everything would be okay.
I remembered believing her.
“What did you find?””
Emily’s voice became softer.
“I found out Lily’s medical records had been altered.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Someone changed them.””
“Why?””
“Because they were hiding the truth about where she came from.””
I stared at Thomas.
“Where she came from?””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen carefully.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done listening carefully.””
My voice trembled.
“I want the truth.””
He nodded.
“Lily was part of a medical study.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
“She was a baby. She didn’t know.””
“No.””
“Emily didn’t know either.””
I looked at Vanessa’s mother.
“What did you do?””
She looked down.
“We didn’t create Lily.””
“Then what?””
“We protected the people who did.””
The words made my stomach turn.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
She cried silently.
“I knew part of it.””
“You knew my daughter was connected to this and still came into my life?””
“I was trying to help.””
“You lied to me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
Everyone had the same excuse.
Protect you.
Protect you.
Protect you.
But nobody had protected me from waking up every day believing my wife was dead.
Nobody had protected Lily from losing her mother.
Nobody had protected me from standing at an altar while my entire life collapsed.
“Why the fake pregnancy?””
Vanessa looked down.
That question hurt her.
“I needed a reason to stay close to you.””
I stared.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“I knew someone was watching you.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who was watching me?””
Vanessa’s mother slowly spoke.
“Richard.””
I looked at the photograph.
“But you said he was my father’s old partner.””
“He was.””
“Then why would he watch me?””
“Because your father left something behind.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“A file.””
“What file?””
Vanessa’s mother looked at Lily.
“The file that could destroy everything Richard built.””
I looked at my daughter.
And suddenly, every secret became connected.
The fake pregnancy.
The box.
The photograph.
The accident.
Emily disappearing.
All of it came back to Lily.
I walked toward Vanessa.
“You didn’t love me.””
Her face collapsed.
“That’s not true.””
“You used me.””
“No.””
“You came into my life because of my daughter.””
“I came into your life because I wanted to protect your daughter.””
“By lying?””
She had no answer.
I looked away.
I hated that part of me still wanted to believe her.
Because I remembered the woman who held Lily’s hand when she was sick.
The woman who read bedtime stories.
The woman who made pancakes every Sunday.
But I didn’t know which parts were real anymore.
Then Emily suddenly gasped through the phone.
“Daniel.””
I lifted it.
“What?””
Her voice was urgent.
“You need to get Lily out of there.””
I looked around.
“Why?””
“Because if Richard knows you found the file…”
She stopped.
“Emily?””
“What?””
I heard fear in her voice.
“Daniel, where is Lily?””
I turned.
Marcus was no longer sitting beside my daughter.
My heart dropped.
The pew was empty.
The flower basket was lying on the floor.
“Marcus?””
No answer.
I looked around wildly.
“Where is my daughter?””
Everyone started searching.
The church doors were still closed.
The windows were too high.
Nobody had seen her leave.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
One picture.
My blood ran cold.
Because the picture showed Lily sitting in the backseat of a car.
And underneath it were six words:
*“You should have left the past buried.””*
I looked at the screen.
Then at Emily.
And for the first time, I understood.
May you like
The wedding was never the real trap.
I was.
