Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Hotel

Daniel didn't answer immediately.
He reached for the phone, read the two messages, and returned it to Danielle without comment.
She watched him carefully.
“Dad?””
“It's probably someone trying to create confusion.””
“Then why do you look like that?””
He exhaled slowly.
“Because I recognize the number.””
Danielle glanced at the screen.
“Who sent it?””
“Someone who should have stayed out of our family's affairs.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“No,” Daniel admitted.
“It isn't.””
Outside the private lounge, hotel employees moved quietly through the corridor. Somewhere downstairs, a guest laughed, and the soft chime of an elevator sounded.
The world had returned to its ordinary rhythm.
But Danielle could no longer stop thinking about the message.
Why the Grand Meridian was never supposed to be yours.
She had known her father was wealthy for as long as she could remember.
He had never hidden that fact, but he had never made money the center of their relationship either. He drove ordinary cars when she was growing up, insisted that she work summer jobs, and encouraged her to choose her own career.
When Danielle had become pregnant, he had offered financial help.
She had declined most of it.
When Grace was born, he had quietly paid for the baby's medical expenses after Danielle admitted that the first month of maternity leave had been more difficult than expected.
He had never complained.
He had never used his generosity as leverage.
But he had also never explained the full extent of his business interests.
“Dad,” Danielle said, “what does that message mean?””
Daniel sat back in his chair.
“The Grand Meridian is part of a larger hospitality group. I've owned a controlling interest for years.””
“I know that now.””
“There's more.””
She waited.
Daniel glanced toward the door before continuing.
“Your mother and I started our first property business together. Before you were born, we purchased a small roadside inn that was nearly bankrupt. We renovated it ourselves. Your mother chose the name, designed the first guest rooms, and handled the books while I worked with contractors.””
Danielle smiled faintly.
“You've told me stories about Mom's terrible accounting handwriting.””
“Her handwriting was terrible. Her business instincts were exceptional.””
The smile faded from his face.
“After she died, I kept the company running. Eventually, it grew into a regional hospitality business. The Grand Meridian became one of our flagship properties.””
Danielle glanced toward the lobby.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I did tell you about the business. I didn't tell you about the ownership structure.””
“Why not?””
“Because I wanted you to have the freedom to decide who you wanted to be without feeling obligated to become me.””
Danielle looked down at Grace.
“That sounds like something you would say.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Your mother used to say the same thing.””
For a moment, the room felt peaceful.
Then Danielle's phone buzzed again.
This time, the message contained a photograph.
It showed a younger Daniel standing beside a woman in a dark green dress outside the Grand Meridian's original entrance. The building looked smaller, its sign faded, and the date printed in the corner suggested the photograph had been taken more than twenty years earlier.
Danielle recognized her father immediately.
The woman beside him was unfamiliar.
Beneath the photograph was a single sentence.
Your father didn't build this empire alone.
Danielle looked at him.
“Who is she?””
Daniel's face became still.
“Her name is Evelyn Shaw.””
“Who is Evelyn Shaw?””
“She was my business partner.””
“Was?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Evelyn and I founded the original company with your mother. She left the business years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because we disagreed about how the company should grow.””
Danielle studied the photograph again.
“Is she the person who sent the messages?””
“I don't know.””
“Dad, someone is telling me that the hotel was never supposed to be mine.””
Daniel was silent.
She felt a chill move through her.
“Was it?””
He looked at her directly.
“The company belongs to the people and entities listed in its legal ownership records. No one has secretly promised you the entire hotel.””
Danielle frowned.
“I never asked for the hotel.””
“I know.””
“Then why would anyone send me this?””
“Because someone wants you to question your family.””
She shook her head.
“You're asking me to trust you without explaining anything.””
Daniel lowered his gaze.
For the first time, she noticed that he looked older than he had that morning. Not physically weaker, but burdened by something he had carried for a long time.
“Your mother wanted to leave you something more meaningful than money,” he said.
“What?””
“Her shares in the original family company.””
Danielle stared at him.
“My mother owned shares?””
“Yes. When she died, her estate was settled according to her will. You inherited a portion of her interests, held in trust until you reached the age specified in the documents.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because the trust was established to protect your inheritance, and because I wanted to make sure you understood what it meant before you were asked to make decisions about it.””
Danielle looked at Grace.
“I'm twenty-six. Surely I should know.””
“You should,” Daniel replied.
“And I should have explained it more clearly.””
His honesty caught her off guard.
She had expected him to dismiss her questions or tell her that everything would be fine.
Instead, he was admitting that he had kept something important from her.
“Does that mean I own part of this hotel?””
“Indirectly, your inherited interests may include a stake in the company that owns it. The exact structure is more complicated than that.””
“How complicated?””
“Complicated enough that we need to review the documents before making assumptions.””
Danielle let out a frustrated breath.
“I don't want a fortune. I want to understand why someone thinks I'm being cheated.””
Daniel reached across the table and took her hand.
“Then we'll find out.””
A knock interrupted them.
Leonard Price entered, carrying a sealed envelope.
“Mr. Brooks, I'm sorry to disturb you. The security team found something unusual while reviewing the footage.””
Daniel's expression sharpened.
“What?””
“The recording from the lobby is clear. But shortly before Mrs. Hale entered the building, someone accessed the staff entrance using a management credential. The person didn't enter the lobby, and we haven't identified them yet.””
“Was anything removed?””
“We don't know. However, the access log shows that the person entered the administrative corridor leading to the hotel's document archive.””
Daniel stood.
“Who has access to that corridor?””
“Senior management, legal staff, and a limited number of corporate officers.””
Danielle looked from Leonard to her father.
“Could this be connected to the messages?””
“Possibly,” Daniel replied.
Leonard placed the envelope on the table.
“We also received a delivery addressed to Ms. Brooks. It was left at the reception desk approximately ten minutes ago. The sender's information is incomplete.””
Danielle stared at it.
Her name was written in black ink.
Not Danielle Brooks.
Danielle Brooks-Shaw.
She had never used that name.
She looked up sharply.
“Dad, why does this say Shaw?””
Daniel didn't touch the envelope.
His face had lost its color.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was Grace's quiet breathing.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Because your mother had a name she stopped using long before you were born.””
Danielle's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“What name?””
Daniel looked at the envelope as though it contained something far more dangerous than paper.
“Evelyn Shaw wasn't just my business partner,” he said.
“She was your mother's older sister.””
Danielle stared at him.
“My aunt?””
“Yes.””
“But you said she left the company.””
“She did.””
“Then why is someone using her name to contact me?””
Daniel reached for the envelope.
Before he could open it, his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
The caller's name made his expression change completely.
EVELYN SHAW.
He answered without putting the call on speaker.
“Evelyn.””
A woman's voice came through, thin and urgent.
“Daniel, don't open the envelope.””
He froze.
Danielle leaned forward.
“What is it?”” she whispered.
Her father held up one hand, asking her to wait.
Evelyn continued, her voice trembling.
“Someone has been altering the trust records. They know Danielle is at the Grand Meridian, and they're going to try to make her sign something before the end of the day.””
Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
There was a long silence.
Then Evelyn said six words that made him look at his daughter with sudden fear.
“The person who hit her was hired.””
Victoria Hale hadn't simply lost her temper.
Someone had arranged for Danielle to be at the hotel.
Someone had known exactly who she was.
And someone wanted her to sign away her inheritance.
Danielle looked at the sealed envelope bearing her name.
“Dad,” she whispered, “what have we walked into?””
Daniel ended the call and turned toward Leonard.
“Lock down the document archive. No one enters without my authorization.””
Then he looked at Danielle.
“Whatever happens next, sweetheart, do not sign anything.””
He reached for the envelope.
The moment he broke the seal, a single sheet of paper slid onto the table.
At the top was a legal heading.
*NOTICE OF BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP TRANSFER.*

Beneath it was Danielle's name.
And at the bottom, where the beneficiary's signature should have been, someone had already forged it.
