Chapter 3: The Name on the Deed

For several seconds, Victoria Hale looked as if she had forgotten how to breathe.
Then she laughed.
It was a brittle, disbelieving sound that echoed beneath the chandeliers.
“You own this hotel?””
Daniel Brooks didn't answer immediately.
Victoria looked toward Marcus, searching his face for confirmation that this was some elaborate joke.
Marcus had gone pale.
“Mr. Brooks,” he said, his voice suddenly respectful, “I wasn't aware you were visiting today.””
Daniel looked at him.
“That is generally how an ordinary guest visits a hotel, Marcus. They arrive without announcing themselves and expect to be treated with basic courtesy.””
He gestured toward Danielle.
“My daughter came here to rest with her newborn. Instead, she was struck in the face, insulted, and threatened with removal. I would like to understand how that happened.””
Marcus cleared his throat.
“I'm certain there has been a misunderstanding.””
“Then explain it.””
“I was responding to a complaint from Mrs. Hale.””
“Did you investigate the complaint?””
“I spoke with the parties involved.””
“Did you review the security footage?””
Marcus hesitated.
“No, sir.””
“Did you ask the witnesses?””
“No, sir.””
“Did you ask my daughter whether she was injured?””
Marcus's lips parted.
“I—”
“Did you?””
“No.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Then what, exactly, did you investigate?””
Marcus looked down.
Victoria recovered enough to step forward.
“Mr. Brooks, I'm sure your daughter has exaggerated what happened. She was standing in my way, and I reacted. It was a minor incident.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You struck a woman holding a newborn baby.””
“I barely touched her!””
Danielle felt her father's arm tighten around her shoulders.
Victoria pointed at Danielle's practical clothes.
“And I certainly didn't expect someone like her to be wandering around a hotel of this caliber.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Someone like her?””
“You know what I mean.””
“No, Mrs. Hale. I would like you to explain precisely what you mean.””
Victoria glanced at the people watching.
For the first time, the audience she had previously enjoyed seemed to make her uncomfortable.
“I mean she doesn't look like she belongs here.””
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Danielle was wearing a cream blouse with a small stain near one cuff, navy trousers, and flat shoes. Her hair was gathered into a loose bun. The diaper bag hanging from her shoulder was worn at the corners.
She looked tired.
She looked like a mother who had spent a sleepless night tending to a newborn.
She looked exactly like someone who deserved to sit down without being judged.
Daniel turned back to Victoria.
“My daughter doesn't need to dress a certain way to earn the right to be treated like a human being.””
Victoria's cheeks reddened.
“That's not what I said.””
“Your actions said it clearly enough.””
He then looked at Marcus.
“Call the hotel's security director. Preserve every camera recording from this lobby, including the entrance, reception area, and seating alcove. I want the footage secured before anyone has the opportunity to alter or delete it.””
“Yes, sir.””
“And notify the regional operations office that I want an independent review of today's incident.””
Marcus nodded quickly.
“Immediately.””
Daniel's gaze sharpened.
“Not after Mrs. Hale leaves. Not after your shift ends. Now.””
Marcus hurried toward the reception desk.
Victoria watched him go, her mouth tightening.
Then she turned to Daniel with a smile that looked increasingly desperate.
“Mr. Brooks, surely we can resolve this privately. My husband and I have been loyal customers for years. We have stayed in your suites, hosted business dinners here, and recommended this hotel to countless people.””
Daniel folded his hands in front of him.
“Loyalty is valuable, Mrs. Hale. So is honesty.””
“My husband is Richard Hale.””
“I heard you the first time.””
“Richard has business relationships with some of the most influential people in the city.””
“Then I'm sure he understands the importance of evidence.””
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“You're making a mistake.””
Daniel glanced toward the reception desk.
“No. The mistake was allowing a person to believe that her money gave her permission to strike another human being.””
A few guests shifted in their seats.
One of the women who had remained silent earlier now looked directly at Victoria.
“I saw the slap,” she said.
“It was completely unprovoked.””
The elderly man beside the elevator nodded.
“So did I.””
Victoria spun toward them.
“Why didn't either of you say something earlier?””
The woman looked uncomfortable but held her ground.
“Because I was afraid of becoming involved. That doesn't mean what you did was right.””
Daniel gave her a small nod of acknowledgment.
“Thank you.””
Emily approached cautiously from the reception desk.
“Mr. Brooks, I can provide a written statement. I also remember which cameras cover the area.””
“Please do,” Daniel said.
“And don't worry about retaliation for telling the truth. You have my word that the investigation will be handled independently.””
Marcus returned with the security director, a stocky man named Leonard Price.
Leonard greeted Daniel with a serious expression.
“Mr. Brooks, I've instructed the team to secure the recordings. No one will access or modify them without authorization.””
“Good. I want a copy preserved for the independent investigators.””
“Understood.””
Daniel turned toward Danielle.
“Sweetheart, would you like to sit somewhere private while we handle this?””
Danielle looked at Grace, who was beginning to fuss.
“Yes, please.””
Leonard immediately offered to escort them to a quiet family lounge.
Victoria stepped in front of them.
“Wait. You're not seriously going to let this woman damage my reputation over one slap?””
Daniel stopped.
“No one is damaging your reputation, Mrs. Hale. Your actions are being examined.””
“I have a family. I have a business. You can't simply destroy everything because your daughter claims I hit her.””
Daniel's voice remained calm.
“Then the footage should be reassuring to you.””
Victoria's fingers tightened around her handbag.
She looked at Danielle.
“You should tell your father to stop this before you regret it.””
Danielle stared at her.
For the first time, she wasn't frightened of Victoria.
She was angry.
“You hit me while I was holding my daughter,” Danielle said.
“Then you watched the manager try to throw me out. You had several chances to apologize. Instead, you threatened everyone who witnessed what you did.””
Victoria's mouth twisted.
“Don't lecture me.””
“Then stop giving me reasons to speak.””
The words surprised Danielle as much as they surprised the people around her.
Her father looked at her with quiet pride.
Victoria stepped backward.
“You'll be hearing from my lawyers.””
“That's your right,” Daniel replied.
“You may contact the hotel's legal department through the usual channels.””
She stared at him, apparently waiting for a more dramatic threat.
When none came, she spun around and marched toward the entrance.
But just before she reached the doors, her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Richard.
Her husband.
She answered sharply.
“What?””
A man's voice emerged from the speaker, loud enough for Danielle to hear.
“Victoria, what on earth have you done?””
Victoria froze.
“What are you talking about?””
“Someone just called me from the Grand Meridian. They said Daniel Brooks is there.””
She glanced over her shoulder.
Daniel stood beside his daughter, listening quietly.
Victoria lowered her voice.
“Yes, he's here. He's making a ridiculous fuss because that woman claims I slapped her.””
There was a pause.
Then Richard spoke again.
“Did you say Daniel Brooks?””
“Yes!””
“Victoria, listen to me very carefully. Do not say another word until I get there.””
She frowned.
“Richard, I don't understand.””
His voice sharpened.
“Do you have any idea whose daughter you just hit?””
Victoria's eyes moved toward Danielle.
May you like
The phone trembled in her hand.
And for the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely afraid.
