Chapter 4: The Husband Who Knew Too Much

Richard Hale arrived twenty minutes later.

He entered the Grand Meridian carrying no briefcase, wearing a dark business suit and the expression of a man who had spent the entire drive trying to calculate the damage caused by his wife's temper.

Victoria hurried toward him.

“Richard, thank goodness. You need to explain to these people that this is a misunderstanding.””

Richard didn't look at her.

His eyes were fixed on Daniel Brooks.

“Mr. Brooks.””

Daniel nodded.

“Richard.””

The two men shook hands.

The gesture was brief, formal, and unmistakably strained.

Victoria stared between them.

“You know each other?””

Richard finally turned toward her.

“Of course I know him.””

“Then tell him to stop threatening me.””

Richard closed his eyes for a moment.

“Victoria, please be quiet.””

Her mouth fell open.

“You're taking his side?””

“I'm asking you to stop talking until I understand what happened.””

“I already told you what happened!””

“Yes,” Richard replied.

“And I was hoping you might have told me the truth.””

Victoria recoiled as though he had slapped her.

Daniel remained silent.

He had known Richard Hale for nearly a decade. Their professional relationship had begun when Richard's company sought financing for a commercial development project. Over the years, the two men had negotiated several agreements, some successful and others abandoned before construction began.

Richard was ambitious, sharp, and generally careful.

Victoria, however, had developed a reputation for treating service workers as though they were invisible.

Daniel had heard stories.

He had never witnessed anything like this.

Until now.

Richard approached Danielle.

“Ms. Brooks, I sincerely apologize for what happened to you.””

Danielle held Grace closer.

“Did you know your wife treats people this way?””

Richard's face tightened.

“I've heard complaints about her behavior. I didn't know she would do something like this.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“That is a lie. I have never—”

Richard raised his hand.

“Victoria. Stop.””

She stared at him.

He turned back to Danielle.

“I want you to know that I don't condone violence, and I won't ask you to forgive her. If you decide to file a police report, I won't interfere.””

Danielle studied his expression.

It looked sincere.

But she had heard too many apologies from people who wanted a problem to disappear rather than a wrong to be corrected.

“Then don't interfere,” she said.

“I won't.””

“And don't ask your business partners to pressure my father.””

Richard glanced at Daniel.

“I would never do that.””

Daniel's expression remained unreadable.

“Let's hope your actions match your words.””

A security officer approached with a tablet.

“Mr. Brooks, we've secured the relevant footage. The first review confirms the sequence described by the witnesses.””

Victoria's face went white.

Richard looked at her.

“Did you hit her?””

She opened her mouth.

Then she looked toward the guests, the security officer, and Marcus Reed, who stood near reception with his hands clasped nervously.

Finally, she whispered, “She provoked me.””

Richard's shoulders sank.

“That's not an answer.””

“She was in my way!””

“And that gives you the right to hit her?””

Victoria's eyes flashed.

“You don't understand what it's like to spend your entire life dealing with people who don't know their place.””

The words hung in the air.

Richard stared at her.

“Do you hear yourself?””

Victoria looked around and seemed to realize that every person within earshot had heard her.

She pressed her lips together.

Daniel turned toward Leonard.

“Please make sure the footage is preserved and that the independent review includes Mr. Reed's response to the incident.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Mr. Brooks, I acknowledge that I should have handled the situation differently.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Differently how?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I should have gathered statements from witnesses before making a decision.””

“And?””

“I should have addressed the assault allegation instead of immediately asking Ms. Brooks to leave.””

“And?””

Marcus's face reddened.

“I should not have assumed that Mrs. Hale's status as a regular guest made her account more credible.””

Daniel nodded.

“Those are important admissions. Put them in your written report.””

Marcus looked stricken.

“Sir, I've worked for this hotel group for fourteen years. I've always tried to protect its reputation.””

“Reputation isn't protected by hiding misconduct,” Daniel replied.

“It's protected by responding to it honestly.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I understand.””

“I'm not certain you do yet.””

Daniel turned toward the security director.

“Arrange for Danielle and Grace to have a private room where they can rest. Make sure she receives medical attention if she wants it. The hotel will cover the immediate expenses, without requiring her to sign any agreement or waive any rights.””

Victoria gave a sharp laugh.

“Of course. Give her a free suite. Perhaps a check, too. That should make everyone happy.””

Danielle's expression hardened.

“I don't want your money.””

“It's not my money,” Victoria snapped.

“It's his.””

She pointed at Daniel.

“You think owning a hotel makes you untouchable? You think you can humiliate me in front of everyone and get away with it?””

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“No one is humiliating you. You're experiencing the consequences of your own behavior.””

Victoria turned to Richard.

“Say something!””

Richard looked exhausted.

“What do you want me to say?””

“That they're wrong!””

“I watched the footage.””

She froze.

“You watched what?””

“The security director showed me the initial recording. You walked into Danielle, spilled no coffee, and then struck her when she challenged you.””

Victoria's lips parted.

Richard continued.

“You also threatened an employee for telling the truth.””

“She was disrespectful!””

“She was honest.””

Victoria stared at him as though she no longer recognized the man standing before her.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Richard, please. We can fix this.””

Richard looked toward Daniel.

“I'll cooperate with the investigation. I also want to make sure our company has no involvement in influencing the hotel's response.””

Daniel gave a small nod.

“That's the appropriate decision.””

Richard turned back to his wife.

“We're leaving.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No. I'm not leaving until he apologizes.””

Richard looked at her in disbelief.

“For what?””

“For embarrassing me!””

He took a long breath.

“Victoria, you struck a woman holding a newborn. You cannot turn yourself into the victim simply because people saw what you did.””

Her face crumpled for a second.

Then anger returned.

She grabbed his arm.

“Do you have any idea what this will do to our family?””

Richard gently removed her hand.

“Yes,” he said.

“And that's why I'm asking you to stop making it worse.””

Victoria stared at him.

For the first time, her husband wasn't rescuing her.

He wasn't smoothing things over or blaming the staff.

He wasn't telling her that money could make an inconvenient truth disappear.

He was standing on the other side of the room.

And she hated him for it.

As Richard escorted her toward the entrance, Victoria looked back at Danielle.

“You'll regret this,” she whispered.

Danielle didn't answer.

Her father guided her toward the private lounge, where a nurse had been arranged to check the swelling on her cheek.

Grace was asleep again.

For the first time that afternoon, Danielle allowed herself to cry.

Daniel sat beside her.

“You don't have to be strong every second,” he said.

She leaned against his shoulder.

“I didn't want to call you.””

“I know.””

“I thought I could handle it myself.””

“You did handle it. You told the truth, protected your daughter, and refused to accept the blame for something you didn't do.””

Danielle wiped her eyes.

“Why does it feel like I did something wrong?””

“Because some people are very good at making others feel guilty for refusing to be mistreated.””

She looked down at Grace.

“Will she grow up in a world where people treat her like that?””

Daniel brushed a finger over the baby's blanket.

“She will encounter people who judge her. That's inevitable. But she can also learn that dignity isn't something other people get to grant or take away.””

Danielle nodded slowly.

Then her phone buzzed.

An unknown number had sent a message.

You have no idea what your father has been hiding from you.

A second message appeared before she could respond.

Ask him why the Grand Meridian was never supposed to be yours.

Danielle stared at the screen.

Across the room, Daniel noticed the change in her expression.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She looked up.

May you like

“Dad, what does that message mean?””

For the first time since he had entered the hotel, Daniel Brooks looked genuinely unsettled.
