Chapter 2: The Black SUV

The black SUV stopped directly beneath the hotel's covered entrance.
Its windows were tinted. Its bodywork gleamed beneath the afternoon sun, and the driver stepped out before the engine had fully settled.
Inside the lobby, Victoria was still talking.
“Honestly, Marcus, I don't know why you're allowing this to continue. If my husband were here, he'd have security remove her immediately.””
Marcus nodded.
“I'm handling it, Mrs. Hale.””
“Then handle it.””
He turned toward Danielle.
“Miss Brooks, I have been patient, but you're no longer welcome to remain in the lobby.””
Danielle looked up from Grace.
“I'm sitting quietly.””
“You're creating a disturbance.””
“By sitting?””
“By refusing a reasonable request.””
Victoria folded her arms.
“Some people simply cannot accept when they're not wanted.””
Danielle glanced toward the entrance.
She had heard her father's voice in her head countless times throughout her childhood.
Never mistake someone's confidence for proof that they're right.
He had taught her that when she was twelve and a classmate had accused her of stealing a watch. He had repeated it when she was seventeen and a teacher had assumed she couldn't afford a school trip.
Now, at twenty-six, she was learning how difficult that lesson became when a person had the power to make everyone else look away.
The glass doors opened.
Two men in dark suits entered first.
One was tall and broad-shouldered, with a discreet earpiece. The other carried a leather folder and wore a silver tie. Neither looked around like a tourist searching for a reception desk.
They walked directly toward Danielle.
Victoria's expression brightened.
“Oh, finally. Security.””
Marcus visibly relaxed.
“Gentlemen,” he began, moving toward them, “I'm glad you're here. We have a disruptive visitor who needs to be escorted out.””
The taller man didn't stop.
“Where is Danielle Brooks?””
Marcus blinked.
“Excuse me?””
“Danielle Brooks,” the man repeated.
“We're here for her.””
Danielle stood slowly, keeping Grace tucked securely against her chest.
“I'm Danielle.””
The man's expression softened.
“Ms. Brooks, my name is Thomas. Your father asked us to make sure you're comfortable.””
Victoria stared at him.
“Her father sent you?””
“Yes, ma'am.””
“And who exactly is her father?””
Thomas glanced at Danielle before answering.
“Mr. Brooks will be here shortly.””
Victoria gave an incredulous laugh.
“Mr. Brooks? That's supposed to mean something?””
The second man opened his folder.
“Perhaps it would be best if everyone remained calm until he arrives.””
Marcus's forehead glistened.
He looked from the men to Danielle, then back toward the entrance.
“Are you police officers?””
“No,” Thomas answered.
“Then you have no authority to interfere with hotel management.””
Thomas closed the folder.
“We haven't interfered with anything, sir.””
Victoria stepped closer, her heels striking the marble.
“Listen, I don't know who you people think you are, but I am Victoria Hale. My husband is Richard Hale. We have extensive business relationships throughout this city.””
The second man looked at her.
“I'm familiar with the name.””
“Then perhaps you understand why this ridiculous situation should end immediately.””
He didn't answer.
Victoria's cheeks flushed.
“I want that woman removed.””
Thomas looked at Danielle's cheek.
“Did someone strike you, Ms. Brooks?””
“Yes.””
“Would you be willing to tell us what happened?””
Before Danielle could speak, Victoria stepped forward.
“This is outrageous. She was bothering me, and I defended myself.””
Thomas's expression remained neutral.
“Did you strike her?””
Victoria's lips tightened.
“I may have pushed her hand away.””
Danielle stared at her.
“You slapped me across the face.””
“Because you were getting in my way!””
The words burst out before Victoria could stop them.
Several people in the lobby turned.
The young employee, Emily, stood near the service corridor with a tray of glasses. She looked directly at Victoria.
Thomas noticed.
“Ma'am,” he said to Emily, “did you witness the incident?””
Emily hesitated.
Marcus stepped forward.
“She is an employee. She has duties to perform.””
“I asked her a question,” Thomas replied.
Emily lowered the tray onto a nearby table.
“Yes. I saw it.””
Victoria's face changed.
“Young lady, be very careful about what you say.””
Emily's fingers tightened around the tray's edge.
“I saw you slap Ms. Brooks. She hadn't touched you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Emily, you are making an accusation against a hotel guest.””
“No, sir. I'm telling you what I saw.””
The lobby seemed to grow smaller.
Danielle felt a sudden rush of gratitude so intense that she almost cried.
One person had finally chosen to speak.
Thomas nodded.
“Thank you. Please remain available in case we need a formal statement.””
Victoria turned toward Marcus.
“Are you going to allow your employees to insult me?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I assure you, Mrs. Hale, this will be handled.””
The main entrance opened again.
This time, nobody spoke.
A man in his late fifties stepped inside wearing a charcoal suit and a white shirt without a tie. His dark hair was threaded with silver, and he walked with the quiet certainty of someone who had never needed to raise his voice to command a room.
He carried no briefcase.
He didn't need one.
Danielle's face changed immediately.
“Dad.””
He crossed the lobby in long strides.
For the first time since the slap, Danielle stopped trying to appear composed. Her eyes filled, and she leaned into him when he reached her.
Her father wrapped one arm around her shoulders, careful not to disturb Grace.
“Let me see your face, sweetheart.””
“It's okay.””
“Danielle.””
She lowered her eyes.
He gently tilted her chin toward the light.
The red mark on her cheek had darkened.
His jaw tightened.
“Who did this?””
Danielle glanced at Victoria.
“That woman.””
Her father turned.
Victoria studied him from head to toe. His suit was expensive but understated, his shoes polished, his expression controlled.
He didn't wear a visible luxury watch. He carried no obvious designer accessories.
To Victoria, he looked like a businessman who had done reasonably well for himself.
Not someone who could threaten the world she occupied.
She gave him a dismissive smile.
“I'm assuming you're the father.””
“I am.””
“Then perhaps you should teach your daughter to behave properly in public.””
He looked at her for a long moment.
“Did you strike her?””
Victoria lifted her chin.
“She was rude to me.””
“That wasn't my question.””
“I don't have to answer questions from you.””
Danielle's father nodded once, as if Victoria had confirmed something he already suspected.
Then he turned to Marcus.
“Are you the manager?””
Marcus straightened.
“Yes. Marcus Reed. I oversee guest operations.””
“I'm Daniel Brooks.””
Marcus extended his hand automatically.
Daniel didn't take it.
“Your employee tells me that you intend to remove my daughter from this hotel after a woman struck her in the face.””
Marcus's smile became strained.
“Sir, the situation is more complicated than that.””
“Then explain it.””
“Mrs. Hale is a valued guest. There was a disagreement, and I was trying to prevent further disruption.””
Daniel looked around the lobby.
“Did you ask anyone what happened?””
“I heard both sides.””
“No,” Emily said quietly from behind the reception desk.
“You didn't, Mr. Reed.””
Marcus whipped around.
“Emily!””
Daniel raised one hand.
“Let her speak.””
Emily swallowed.
“I saw Mrs. Hale walk into Ms. Brooks and then slap her.
Ms. Brooks never touched her.””
Daniel listened without interruption.
When Emily finished, he nodded.
“Thank you for telling the truth.””
Victoria let out an exasperated breath.
“This is absurd. I'm not going to stand here and be accused by strangers.””
Daniel finally looked directly at her.
“Then perhaps you should leave.””
Victoria laughed.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
She glanced at Marcus, expecting him to intervene.
He looked uncertain now, but Victoria had spent too many years getting her way to recognize uncertainty as a warning.
“My husband has invested millions in businesses connected to this hotel,” she said.
“You have absolutely no idea who you're dealing with.””
Daniel's expression didn't change.
“I assure you, Mrs. Hale, I have a very good idea.””
He turned toward his daughter.
“Danielle, has anyone told you who owns this hotel?””
She frowned.
“No. Why?””
Daniel looked toward the enormous brass emblem mounted behind reception.
Then he answered.
“Because I do.””
The silence that followed was absolute.
Marcus's face drained of color.
Victoria stared at Daniel, waiting for someone to laugh.
Nobody did.
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
Daniel adjusted Grace's blanket with surprising tenderness.
“Now,” he said, turning back to Marcus, “I would like to see the hotel's general manager.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Sir, I am the general manager.””
May you like
Daniel studied him.
“Then you should understand why this conversation has just become much more serious.””
