Chapter 5: The Man Behind Everything

I didn’t tell Rebecca about the call.

I couldn’t.

Not yet.

Because suddenly I didn’t know who was protecting me and who was protecting themselves.

I recorded everything.

Every conversation.

Every message.

Every detail.

The police arrived that afternoon after I finally reported what happened.

Rebecca was questioned.

The officers found evidence that the bathroom lock had been recently changed.

They found messages between Rebecca and Daniel.

But they also found something unexpected.

Daniel wasn’t just contacting Rebecca.

He was threatening her.

Detective Collins placed printed messages on the table.

“He’s been blackmailing your wife.””

I stared at the pages.

“What does he want?””

“Money.””

“That’s it?””

The detective hesitated.

“No.””

He pointed to one message.

Daniel had written:

You can’t hide what happened to Ethan forever.

My hands curled into fists.

“What happened to Ethan?””

Rebecca sat across from me, crying.

“I gave him up.””

“For adoption?””

She nodded.

“Daniel found out years later and wanted money. He said he would expose everything.””

“Why bring Ben into this?””

“He didn’t.””

The room became quiet.

Then Harper walked in.

A social worker had brought her from the hospital.

She looked at Rebecca.

“You’re still lying.””

Everyone turned.

Harper stepped forward.

“What do you mean?”” I asked gently.

She looked at me.

“I saw him.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

“The man.””

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“Harper…”

“No!”” Harper shouted.

“Daddy needs to know.””

She pointed toward the window.

“The man who came to the house.””

“When?””

“Before Ben got hurt.””

I knelt down.

“What did he do?””

Harper hugged herself.

“He was angry.””

“What did he say?””

She looked at Rebecca.

Then whispered:

“He said, ‘You’ll pay for taking my son.’”

Rebecca started crying.

The detective stood.

“Daniel.””

I felt sick.

But then Harper added one more thing.

Something none of us expected.

“He wasn’t alone.””

The room froze.

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

Harper looked at me.

“There was another person.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then slowly reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small piece of paper.

“I took this because I thought it was important.””

The detective grabbed it carefully.

It was a receipt.

A hotel receipt.

With a name printed on it.

A name that made Rebecca go completely silent.

Because it wasn’t Daniel’s name.

It was mine.

The detective looked at me.

“I think you need to explain why someone checked into a hotel using your identity.””

May you like

And then Rebecca whispered the words that shattered everything.

“Because someone has been pretending to be you.””
