Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Door
The hospital smelled like disinfectant and fear.
That was the only way I could describe it.
I sat beside Ben’s bed, watching the machines monitor every breath he took.
The doctors said we were lucky.
A few more minutes underwater, and things could have been very different.
I kept replaying one thought over and over.
I almost blamed Harper.
I almost punished her.
My daughter had been trying to save her brother.
And I had screamed at her.
A nurse checked Ben’s monitor before smiling gently.
“He’s responding well,” she said.
I nodded, unable to speak.
My eyes burned.
“Can I see my daughter?””
The nurse looked toward the waiting room.
“She’s with your wife.””
Something about those words bothered me.
With your wife.
Not with Rebecca.
Not with her stepmother.
With your wife.
I walked into the waiting area.
Harper was sitting alone in a chair.
Rebecca stood near the window.
When Harper saw me, she immediately ran over.
“Daddy…”
I hugged her tightly.
“I’m sorry.””
She started crying.
“I tried to get the door open.””
“I know.””
“I hit it because she locked it.””
My arms tightened around her.
“What did you say?””
Harper looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca’s expression changed instantly.
“Harper is confused,” she said.
But Harper shook her head.
“No, I’m not.””
I knelt down.
“Tell me everything.””
Harper wiped her tears.
“Mommy Rebecca told me not to bother Ben.””
I looked up.
“She said that?””
Rebecca crossed her arms.
“She’s a child. She misunderstands things.””
Harper continued.
“She took him into the bathroom.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
Harper looked down.
“She said he needed a bath.””
Rebecca interrupted.
“Because he spilled juice on himself.””
“Then what happened?”” I asked.
Harper’s voice became smaller.
“She came out.””
The room went quiet.
“She locked the door.””
I stared at Rebecca.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Rebecca shook her head quickly.
“Because it didn’t happen.””
Harper’s eyes filled with tears.
“She told me I was lying.””
My wife looked away.
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
A feeling I didn’t want to acknowledge.
Doubt.
That night, after Harper fell asleep in the hospital chair beside Ben’s bed, I walked outside.
I needed air.
I needed to think.
I called my neighbor, Mark, because something had been bothering me.
“Mark, did you see anything today?””
There was a pause.
Then he said:
“I didn’t know if I should tell you.””
My heart started racing.
“Tell me.””
“I saw Rebecca outside earlier.””
“Where?””
“Near your house.””
“That’s not unusual.””
“No,” Mark said quietly.
“But she wasn’t alone.””
I gripped my phone.
“Who was she with?””
Another pause.
Then Mark said a name I hadn’t heard in years.
“Daniel.””
My blood ran cold.
Daniel was Rebecca’s ex-husband.
The man she told me had disappeared from her life completely.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
I looked back through the hospital window at my family.
My injured son.
My frightened daughter.
My wife who suddenly seemed like a stranger.
Then Mark added:
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“I saw Daniel carrying something into your house.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What kind of thing?””
May you like
Mark lowered his voice.
“A small locked box.””
