Chapter 3: The Box in the Closet

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because Ben was in danger anymore.

Because I was beginning to wonder if he had ever been safe.

The next morning, I drove home while Rebecca stayed at the hospital.

I told her I needed clothes.

That was true.

It just wasn’t the whole truth.

I walked through the front door and felt like I was entering someone else’s house.

Every picture on the wall suddenly looked different.

Every memory felt suspicious.

I went upstairs.

The bathroom door was still broken.

The damage was exactly where I had kicked it.

A reminder.

A warning.

I looked around the room.

Then I noticed something.

The lock.

It had been replaced recently.

I knew because the old one had always stuck.

This one was new.

I took a photo with my phone.

Then I searched the hallway closet.

At first, I found nothing.

Old coats.

Christmas decorations.

A box of toys.

Then I saw a small gap behind some blankets.

Something was hidden there.

A black metal box.

My hands went numb.

The same kind of box Mark had described.

I pulled it out.

It was locked.

I searched nearby.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

Rebecca always kept spare keys in a small ceramic bowl in the kitchen.

I found the key.

It fit.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

My stomach twisted as I looked through them.

The first photo showed Rebecca.

But she looked younger.

Standing beside Daniel.

The second photo showed a little boy.

A boy I had never seen before.

On the back was a name.

“Ethan.””

I sat down.

Rebecca had told me she had no children before me.

She had told me Daniel was a mistake from her past.

A relationship she wanted to forget.

But this was not something you forgot.

A folded document fell from the box.

I opened it.

My hands began shaking.

It was a custody agreement.

For Ethan.

And the date was from three years ago.

The same year Rebecca met me.

I heard the front door open.

I froze.

“Where are you?””

Rebecca’s voice echoed downstairs.

I quickly put the documents back.

But I kept one photograph.

I walked downstairs.

Rebecca stared at me.

“You didn’t answer my calls.””

“I was busy.””

Her eyes moved toward my hand.

She saw the photo.

The color drained from her face.

“Where did you get that?””

I held it up.

“Who is Ethan?””

Silence.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Ethan wasn’t Daniel’s son.””
