The Son Dante Never Knew / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath Our Families

My father had always been a quiet man.

A businessman.

A loving father.

Someone who hated conflict.

At least, that was what I believed.

Now I stood inside his old study, staring at hidden documents behind a false wall.

A place I never knew existed.

Dante found it within ten minutes.

Of course he did.

“You knew?””

I asked.

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then how?””

“Your father thought like a strategist.””

I looked at him.

“You’re comparing him to you?””

“No.””

A pause.

“He was better.””

That surprised me.

Dante respected very few people.

Apparently, my father was one of them.

Inside the hidden compartment was a small box.

No money.

No jewelry.

Only letters.

Hundreds of them.

I picked up the first one.

The handwriting was my father’s.

But the name at the top made my heart stop.

Lucia Moretti.

Dante’s mother.

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

He took the letter.

His hands shook.

“My mother.””

I watched him read.

The silence grew heavier.

Finally, he whispered:

“They knew each other.””

“Who?””

“My mother and your father.””

I sat down.

The entire world felt upside down.

“Our families…”

“Were connected.””

“But how?””

Dante handed me the letter.

I read the first line.

Dante,

If you are reading this, it means the truth has finally reached you.

I stopped.

This wasn’t for my father.

It was for Dante.

The letter continued.

Your father and I made mistakes. We believed power could protect our children. We were wrong.

My hands trembled.

The next line destroyed me.

Elena was never supposed to fall in love with you.

I looked up.

Dante looked just as shocked.

“What?””

I read more.

Your enemies would use her. Your family would use her. The only way to keep her alive was to separate you.

My heart pounded.

My father knew.

He knew everything.

“He wanted us apart.””

Dante shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

“He wanted us alive.””

I hated that those words made sense.

Because suddenly every painful memory had another meaning.

Every refusal.

Every distance.

Every secret.

A knock interrupted us.

Dante’s security team entered.

“We found something.””

They placed a tablet down.

A live video.

Adrian.

Holding Leo.

My scream never came.

Because Dante caught me before I collapsed.

“When?””

“Ten minutes ago.””

My world disappeared.

“My son.””

Dante’s face became terrifyingly calm.

The dangerous Dante returned.

But this time I wasn’t afraid.

Because I knew exactly what he was fighting for.

“Where is he?””

The guard hesitated.

“We’re tracking.””

Dante looked at me.

“I’ll bring him back.””

I grabbed his hand.

“Bring him back to me.””

His eyes softened.

“I will.””

For the first time in years, I believed him.

The rescue happened before sunrise.

Adrian took Leo to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

Dante wanted me to stay behind.

I refused.

“You’re not leaving me again.””

He looked at me.

And then he nodded.

Together, we went.

The warehouse was dark.

Silent.

Too silent.

Then Adrian appeared.

Holding Leo.

My entire body went cold.

“Let him go.””

Adrian smiled.

“You sound exactly like your father.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t know me.””

“No?””

He looked at Leo.

“You’re his daughter.””

I froze.

“What?””

Adrian smiled.

“Your father wasn’t just connected to the Morettis.””

Dante’s voice was deadly.

“Stop.””

But Adrian continued.

“He was the true owner of the empire.””

Silence.

“What?””

Adrian laughed.

“Dante inherited the name.””

He looked at me.

“But your father built everything.””

My mind couldn’t process it.

Leo reached toward me.

“Mommy.””

Adrian looked at him.

“The boy carries both bloodlines.””

Dante stepped forward.

“He carries nothing but himself.””

Adrian smiled.

“And that’s why you were always weak.””

Then suddenly…

Leo bit his hand.

Hard.

Adrian cursed.

Dante moved.

Everything happened at once.

A struggle.

A shout.

A gunshot.

And then silence.

When I opened my eyes…

Dante was holding Leo.

And Adrian was on the ground.

Alive.

But defeated.

Dante looked at me.

And whispered:

“It’s over.””

But he was wrong.

Because Adrian laughed.

And said one final thing.

“Ask Victoria who Leo’s mother really is.””

My blood froze.

Because I was standing right there.

May you like

I was his mother.

Wasn’t I?
