Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Our Secret

“Run.””

Dante’s voice was different.

Not loud.

Not afraid.

Controlled.

The kind of voice that made people move before they understood why.

I grabbed Leo.

Mia appeared from the hallway, her face pale.

“What’s happening?””

Dante didn’t look away from the stranger.

“Take Elena and Leo upstairs.””

I tightened my hold on my son.

“No.””

His eyes finally found mine.

For a moment, I saw the man from years ago.

The man who held me on cold nights.

The man who promised he would always protect me.

But behind those memories was something else.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For us.

“Elena,” he said quietly.

“No.””

The stranger smiled.

“I see she still doesn’t listen.””

Dante’s expression hardened.

“Marco.””

The name felt heavy.

The stranger stepped further inside.

He was older than Dante.

Maybe early fifties.

Silver at his temples.

A calm smile that somehow felt more dangerous than anger.

“After all these years, that’s the first thing you say to me?””

Dante moved between us.

“You should have stayed dead.””

My stomach dropped.

Marco laughed softly.

“Still dramatic.””

I looked at Dante.

“Who is he?””

Dante didn’t answer.

That terrified me.

Because Dante always had answers.

He could calculate business deals in seconds.

He could read a room full of enemies without blinking.

But now he looked like a man standing in front of a ghost.

Marco looked at Leo.

“So this is him.””

I moved backward.

“No.””

Marco tilted his head.

“You have your mother’s courage.””

Leo buried his face against my shoulder.

Dante’s voice became ice.

“Do not look at my son.””

Marco smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The weakness.””

The word hit harder than it should have.

Because that was exactly what Dante had always feared.

Being loved.

Because anyone he loved could be used against him.

I looked at Marco.

“You knew about Leo?””

Marco looked amused.

“I knew before Dante did.””

Dante stepped forward.

“How?””

“Because unlike you, I pay attention.””

The room went silent.

Marco continued.

“You disappeared three years ago, Elena. Did you really think nobody noticed?””

My fingers tightened around Leo.

“I wasn’t hiding from you.””

“No?””

Marco looked at Dante.

“She was hiding from you.””

Dante’s face changed.

“That’s enough.””

“No.””

Marco smiled.

“I want her to know.””

He walked closer.

“You spent years believing Dante abandoned you.””

I said nothing.

“Believing he chose your sister.””

My chest tightened.

“But the truth is much more interesting.””

Dante’s voice became dangerous.

“Marco.””

The stranger ignored him.

“He never chose Victoria.””

I stared.

“I know.””

Marco looked surprised.

“You know?””

I nodded.

“I know about the marriage agreement.””

His smile disappeared slightly.

“Then you know less than you think.””

Dante looked at him sharply.

“What did you do?””

Marco’s eyes moved between us.

“Finally.””

A pause.

“Finally, you ask the right question.””

The house suddenly felt colder.

“What are you talking about?”” I asked.

Marco reached into his coat.

Dante immediately raised his hand.

“Don’t.””

Marco stopped.

Then slowly removed a phone.

He tossed it onto the table.

The screen lit up.

A video.

My blood froze.

Because I recognized the room.

My apartment in Switzerland.

Three years ago.

The night I found out I was pregnant.

I stepped closer.

“No.””

The video played.

It showed me crying on the bathroom floor.

The pregnancy test in my hand.

But I wasn’t alone.

Someone else was there.

Someone standing outside my apartment door.

Watching.

I covered my mouth.

Dante looked at Marco.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“Why?””

Marco smiled.

“Because I needed to know if Elena Carter would become the thing that destroyed Dante Moretti.””

Dante moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Two of his men grabbed him before he reached Marco.

“Dante!””

His eyes never left Marco.

“What did you do?””

Marco looked at Leo.

“I waited.””

“For what?””

“For the perfect moment.””

He pointed toward my son.

“For him.””

I felt sick.

“You’re insane.””

Marco shrugged.

“Maybe.””

Then his expression turned serious.

“But I’m not wrong.””

He looked at Dante.

“You built an empire by convincing yourself you could never love anything.””

Dante said nothing.

“But then you loved her.””

His eyes moved to me.

“Then you had a child.””

The silence was unbearable.

“And suddenly the great Dante Moretti had something to lose.””

Marco smiled.

“That made you weak.””

Dante’s voice was low.

“No.””

Marco raised an eyebrow.

“No?””

Dante looked at Leo.

Then at me.

And something changed.

“No.””

He stepped forward.

“You’re wrong.””

Marco frowned.

Dante continued.

“You think love is a weakness because you’ve never had anyone worth protecting.””

For the first time, Marco looked angry.

Just for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“You still don’t understand.””

He turned toward the door.

“Soon, you will.””

Dante’s men moved.

But Marco was already gone.

The entire room stayed silent.

Then Dante looked at me.

“Elena.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was looking at the phone.

At the video.

At the proof that someone had been watching me from the beginning.

Someone had known about Leo.

Someone had allowed me to run.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

My disappearance hadn’t been an escape.

It had been part of someone’s plan.
