The Son Dante Never Knew / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: Ten Minutes of Truth

Leo was asleep upstairs when Dante and I finally stood face-to-face.

The house felt smaller with him inside.

It had always been like that.

Dante carried a presence that filled every room.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I said.

His jaw tightened.

“I know.””

“Then why are you?””

His eyes moved toward the staircase.

“Because I saw him.””

I crossed my arms.

“Seeing a child does not give you the right to walk into my life.””

His expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

For years, I had wondered if Dante Moretti was even capable of showing it.

Apparently, he was.

Only not when it mattered most.

“You think I don’t know that?”” he asked quietly.

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“You don’t get to act hurt, Dante.””

“I’m not acting.””

“You married my sister.””

His silence answered before he did.

“I know.””

“You stood in front of everyone and promised her forever.””

“I know.””

“I begged you for years to choose me.””

His eyes closed briefly.

That hurt more than anger would have.

Because it meant he remembered.

“I know, Elena.””

“Then explain.””

The room went silent.

For eight years, I had wanted those words.

Explain.

Tell me why.

Tell me why you loved me but wouldn’t choose me.

Tell me why you watched me walk away.

Tell me why you married her.

Dante stepped closer.

“I never stopped choosing you.””

My heart hardened.

“That’s a lie.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

His voice became sharper.

“Do you really think I wanted to marry Victoria?””

I stared at him.

“You did.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Dante looked toward the staircase again.

Toward our son.

Then back at me.

“Because your life depended on it.””

I froze.

“What?””

He reached into his coat.

I immediately stepped back.

“Don’t.””

“It’s not a weapon.””

“I don’t care.””

He slowly removed an envelope.

Old.

Worn.

He placed it on the table.

“I wanted to show you this three years ago.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

“That leaving you was the only way I could keep you alive.””

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

His answer surprised me.

“No?””

“No. Because I know what it looked like.””

His voice lowered.

“I know you saw a man who stopped loving you and married your sister.””

My throat tightened.

“Because that’s exactly what you made it look like.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because someone was listening.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Dante looked toward the windows.

“Three years ago, there were people inside my organization who wanted to destroy me.””

“Your organization?””

He gave me a tired look.

“You always hated that word.””

“Because I knew what it meant.””

Dante’s family had always existed in shadows.

Power.

Money.

Fear.

I had spent years pretending I could separate the man I loved from the world he belonged to.

Maybe I had been wrong.

“Someone discovered you were my weakness,” he said.

I swallowed.

“And Victoria?””

His expression became unreadable.

“Victoria helped me.””

My stomach twisted.

“Don’t defend her.””

“I’m not.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Dante looked at the envelope.

“Victoria married me because she knew the truth.””

I felt the floor disappear.

“What truth?””

He looked at me.

“The truth that your sister was never the woman I loved.””

A noise came from upstairs.

Leo.

Both of us looked toward the staircase.

A tiny figure appeared at the top.

“Mommy?””

I rushed toward him.

But Dante didn’t move.

He just stared.

Like he was seeing a miracle.

Leo looked between us.

Then at Dante.

“Are you the man from the airport?””

I stopped breathing.

Dante slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

Leo tilted his head.

“Why do you look like me?””

Dante’s eyes filled.

Not dramatically.

Not like a movie.

Just a small crack in a man who had spent his entire life being impossible to break.

“Because…”

His voice failed.

He looked at me.

And I knew.

This was the moment everything changed.

“Because I’m your—”

A loud crash interrupted him.

The window behind us shattered.

Dante moved instantly.

He grabbed Leo and pulled him down.

I screamed.

And when the glass stopped falling, Dante was already looking outside.

His face had changed.

The man I loved was gone.

The dangerous man everyone feared had returned.

“Stay here,” he ordered.

I held Leo tighter.

“Dante?””

He looked back at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“They found us.””
