Chapter 8: The Man in the Ballroom

Brielle was on her knees beside the sweetheart table.

A crystal wineglass had shattered across the dance floor, and Daniel was crouched beside her, one hand pressed to the side of her head.

“Move back!”” Daniel shouted.

Guests stumbled away from the table.

I pushed through the crowd.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked up at me.

“She collapsed.””

“I didn’t collapse!”” Brielle cried.

“You nearly hit the floor,” Daniel said.

“I’m fine.””

She tried to stand.

Her knees buckled.

Daniel caught her.

Marcus rushed from the corridor.

“Brielle!””

She looked at him.

“Dad…”

Then she pointed toward the entrance.

A man stood there.

Nobody seemed to know how long he'd been inside.

He wore a dark gray suit, no tie, and carried a thin black briefcase. He wasn't dressed like a wedding guest. He wasn't a vendor. He wasn't security.

He was simply watching us.

And when his eyes met mine, something in his expression made my skin crawl.

Recognition.

Not curiosity.

Recognition.

Vanessa stopped beside me.

Her face went pale.

“Do you know him?”” I whispered.

She nodded.

“Unfortunately.””

Marcus saw the man too.

His entire posture changed.

“Everyone leave the room,” he said.

The man smiled faintly.

“You still think you can give orders.””

Marcus stepped toward him.

“What are you doing here?””

“I came to collect what you owe.””

Daniel stood.

“Who the hell are you?””

The stranger looked at him.

“Someone your future father-in-law has been trying very hard to forget.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Get out.””

The man ignored him.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Claire Reed.””

I didn't answer.

“You've had quite an evening.””

“How do you know my name?””

“I've known your name for years.””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don't talk to him.””

I looked at her.

“Who is he?””

She whispered two words.

“Calvin Shaw.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Apparently it meant everything to Marcus.

He stepped closer to Calvin.

“You were told never to come near my family.””

Calvin smiled.

“You should have followed the same rule.””

Marcus stopped.

“What do you want?””

“The account.””

“There is no account.””

Calvin's smile disappeared.

“Don't lie to me in front of your wife.””

My heart pounded.

“What account?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Claire, don't.””

I turned toward him.

“You don't get to tell me that.””

Calvin opened his briefcase.

Inside were neatly arranged folders.

He removed one and held it out.

“This is your father's original ledger.””

My breath caught.

“My father's?””

“Yes.””

He walked toward me.

Vanessa stepped in front of me.

Calvin stopped.

“Still playing bodyguard, Vanessa?””

“Still blackmailing people, Calvin?””

“I prefer the term collecting.””

She glared at him.

“You nearly destroyed Marcus's company.””

“No. Marcus destroyed his company.””

Calvin looked at me.

“He simply needed someone else to blame.””

I reached around Vanessa.

“Give it to me.””

Calvin handed me the folder.

It was heavier than it looked.

I opened it.

Pages of numbers.

Transfers.

Shell companies.

Dates.

Names.

My father's signature appeared beside several of the entries.

I turned another page.

Then another.

My pulse quickened.

“This is real.””

“Yes.””

“How did you get it?””

Calvin looked at Marcus.

“From the man who kept it hidden.””

I turned sharply.

“Who?””

Calvin didn't answer.

He looked toward the corridor.

“You really don't understand what your husband did.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Calvin.””

“You had one job.””

Calvin's eyes hardened.

“Keep the ledger hidden. Keep the trust untouched. And make sure Claire never learned why her father was investigating the accounts.””

I stared at Marcus.

He said nothing.

My fingers tightened around the ledger.

“What are you talking about?””

Calvin continued.

“Your father wasn't just investigating missing money.””

“What was he investigating?””

“He was investigating forged signatures.””

I frowned.

“Whose signatures?””

“His own.””

A strange silence fell over the room.

Daniel looked confused.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does when someone is using your identity.””

I looked down at the ledger again.

Several transactions were signed in my father's name.

But the handwriting didn't match.

I knew his handwriting.

I had seen his old Christmas cards for years.

These weren't his signatures.

“Who forged them?””

Calvin looked at Marcus.

“Ask him.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“Marcus.””

He finally spoke.

“Your stepmother.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“She didn't do all of it.””

The room seemed to tighten.

Vanessa turned to me.

“Your stepmother forged some signatures.””

“Some?””

“She had help.””

I looked at Marcus.

“From you?””

His face twisted.

“I never forged your father's signature.””

“Then who did?””

Vanessa looked at Calvin.

Calvin gave a faint smile.

“Now we're getting somewhere.””

I stepped toward them.

“Who?””

Neither answered.

Then Brielle spoke weakly from beside Daniel.

“Mom…”

I turned.

She was staring at the ledger.

Her expression was terrified.

“What?””

She pointed to a page.

“That name.””

I looked where she was pointing.

A company appeared in the transaction list.

*Redwood Holdings.*

Brielle swallowed.

“That's the company Vanessa told me about.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

“I saw the name in Dad's office.””

Marcus snapped, “Brielle!””

She recoiled.

I turned to him.

“Let her speak.””

“She doesn't know what she's talking about.””

Brielle started crying.

“I do.””

Marcus stared at his daughter.

She continued.

“Dad told me that Redwood Holdings was gone.””

Calvin laughed.

“Gone?””

He shook his head.

“It's alive.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You said you shut it down.””

“I lied.””

Marcus's face darkened.

“You used my name.””

Calvin shrugged.

“Like you used hers.””

He pointed at me.

My breathing stopped.

“What did Marcus use my name for?””

Marcus moved forward.

“Nothing.””

Calvin opened another folder.

“Then why is Claire Reed listed as the authorized beneficiary on a two-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer?””

I stared at the page.

My name.

My address.

My signature.

All printed on a document dated eight months after I married Marcus.

“That isn't my signature.””

“I know.””

My voice shook.

“Who signed it?””

Calvin looked at Marcus.

Marcus stared at the floor.

I felt suddenly sick.

“You used my identity.””

“No.””

“Then why is my signature here?””

“I didn't sign it.””

“Someone did.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Marcus didn't answer.

I looked at Brielle.

She was crying.

“Did you?””

Her head snapped up.

“No!””

“Did you sign anything using my name?””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer to her.

“I believe her.””

I looked at him.

“Then who did?””

Calvin closed the folder.

“Someone you haven't met yet.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He checked his watch.

“It means you're asking the wrong question.””

“Then tell me the right one.””

He looked directly at me.

“Ask yourself why your father left a trust that could only be unlocked after you discovered the people using you.””

The words hit me.

My stepmother's letter.

The contracts.

The trust.

The wedding.

Brielle.

Marcus.

Vanessa.

None of it had been random.

My stepmother had built a test around me.

But why?

What had she known that I hadn't?

I looked at Calvin.

“What happened to my father's original trust?””

“It's active.””

My breath caught.

“Where?””

“In a bank vault.””

“Which bank?””

“That's the interesting part.””

He smiled.

“You already know it.””

I frowned.

“No, I don't.””

“Yes, you do.””

He walked toward the main ballroom entrance.

Then he stopped.

“Your father kept his safety deposit box at the same bank where your husband deposited the missing money.””

I turned toward Marcus.

He looked terrified.

I understood immediately.

“You still have access to it.””

Marcus said nothing.

Calvin smiled.

“Now you see why he was afraid.””

I stepped toward my husband.

“Take me there.””

“Claire…”

“Take me there tonight.””

“We can't.””

“Why?””

“Because I don't have the key.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

She reached into her coat.

Then she pulled out a small silver key.

Marcus stared at it.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“From the man who gave it to your father.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

She glanced toward Calvin.

“He isn't the only one who knows the truth.””

Calvin suddenly looked toward the ballroom doors.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He took one step backward.

I followed his gaze.

A security guard was walking toward us.

But he wasn't looking at Calvin.

He was looking at me.

He stopped a few feet away.

“Mrs. Reed?””

“Yes?””

He held out a sealed envelope.

“This was left at the front desk for you.””

I took it.

There was no return address.

Just my name.

I opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a death certificate.

I stared at it.

Then my hands began to shake.

The name at the top was my father's.

But the date of death was wrong.

Not by a few days.

Not by a month.

By six years.

I looked at Marcus.

“This says my father died six years after the funeral.””

Marcus's face went white.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel whispered, “That's impossible.””

I turned the page over.

On the back, someone had written a single sentence.

*Your father wasn't buried because he wasn't dead.*

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

And then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed a number I didn't recognize.

I answered.

A man's voice came through, weak and breathless.

“Claire?””

I froze.

May you like

He said my name again.

“Claire, it's your father.””
