Chapter 4: The Dead Woman's Secret
“My stepmother?””
The words barely came out.
Brielle nodded, wiping tears from her cheek.
“She knew about the trust.””
I turned to Marcus.
“Why didn't you ever tell me?””
He looked like he had aged ten years in the last five minutes.
“Because your stepmother made me promise.””
I stared at him.
“My stepmother was dead.””
“I know.””
“Then what exactly did she make you promise?””
Marcus took a breath.
“That I would never interfere with the trust unless you were in danger.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It didn’t to me either.””
“Then explain it.””
He looked toward the ballroom doors.
“Not here.””
I looked around.
The guests were still watching.
Daniel stood several feet away, his face tight with confusion.
Brielle was crying silently.
The venue manager stood frozen with the contract folder against his chest.
I closed my eyes for one second.
Then I opened them.
“No more private conversations,” I said.
“Not tonight. Not after everything you’ve hidden from me.””
Marcus lowered his head.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice was steadier than I felt.
“You have been asking me to trust you while keeping secrets about my money, my house, and my family.””
His jaw tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“So everyone says.””
Brielle suddenly spoke.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
I turned toward her.
“You could have told me.””
“You would have said no.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“Exactly.””
The honesty in her answer stunned me.
“You knew I would say no.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because you would have wanted to know where the money came from.””
“And that would have been terrible?””
She looked down.
“For me? Yes.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Brielle.””
She turned toward him.
“I was going to fix everything after tonight.””
“How?””
“I don't know.””
“You keep saying that.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I thought once I married you, things would change.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“What does that mean?””
She hesitated.
“I thought we’d have access to your family’s business.””
Daniel stared at her.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“You thought marrying me would give you access to my family's money?””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
“That isn't what I meant.””
“It sounds exactly like what you meant.””
I watched the two of them.
Something ugly was surfacing beneath the beautiful wedding.
And for the first time, Daniel seemed to understand that I hadn't been the villain Brielle described.
He turned toward me.
“Claire, did you know about any of this?””
“No.””
He looked at Marcus.
“Did you?””
Marcus nodded.
“Some of it.””
Daniel let out a bitter breath.
“That's unbelievable.””
Brielle stepped toward him.
“Daniel, please.””
He backed away.
“Don't.””
She froze.
The orchestra members began quietly packing away their instruments.
The sound of cases clicking shut felt surreal.
An hour ago, this room had been filled with music.
Now it sounded like a business meeting at the end of a failed company.
I looked at the venue manager.
“Did my stepmother ever contact this venue?””
He checked the records on his tablet.
“Let me see.””
He scrolled.
Then stopped.
“There is a note.””
“What note?””
He read it silently.
His eyebrows rose.
“Mrs. Reed, this isn't from your stepmother.””
“Then who?””
He turned the screen toward me.
A name appeared.
*Eleanor Vaughn.*
My breath caught.
My stepmother's name.
“That's impossible,” I whispered.
The manager looked uncomfortable.
“There's also a date.””
“What date?””
“Three weeks before the wedding reservation was made.””
I stared at him.
“My stepmother died three years ago.””
“I understand.””
“Then why is her name here?””
The manager looked at Marcus.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Because she set it up before she died.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
“I knew there was a file.””
“What file?””
He reached into his jacket.
For several seconds, he searched the inside pocket.
Then he pulled out a small brass key.
My stomach turned.
“What is that?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Your stepmother gave this to me.””
I stared at the key.
“Three years ago?””
“Yes.””
“Why are you carrying it now?””
“Because I was supposed to give it to you when the time was right.””
I laughed bitterly.
“When was the time right?””
“Tonight.””
I looked at him in disbelief.
“My wedding?””
“Our wedding.””
“You planned for this?””
“No.””
“Then why tonight?””
“Because Brielle ran out of options.””
Brielle flinched.
Marcus continued.
“She was supposed to receive money from the trust after marrying Daniel.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because that was your stepmother's condition.””
My mind raced.
“My stepmother had no right to decide what happened to my father's money.””
“She believed she did.””
“She wasn't even his biological wife.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why would anyone allow this?””
He took a step toward me.
“Because your father changed the trust.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
“He changed the beneficiary.””
“From me?””
“Yes.””
I couldn't breathe.
The ballroom seemed to fade around me.
“My father left the trust to my stepmother?””
“Partially.””
“And she left it to Brielle?””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Then who?””
He held out the brass key.
“You.””
I stared at the key.
“What?””
“The trust was never supposed to belong to Brielle.””
My hands started trembling.
“Then why is she involved?””
“Because your stepmother added a condition.””
“What condition?””
Marcus looked at Brielle.
She shook her head rapidly.
“Dad, no.””
He ignored her.
“If you wanted full control of the trust, you had to prove that the people closest to you were not using you.””
I stared at him.
“What does that even mean?””
“It meant the trust would remain locked until you discovered who was taking advantage of you.””
I looked at Brielle.
She covered her mouth.
Daniel looked sick.
“That's insane.””
Marcus nodded.
“I thought so too.””
I looked back at him.
“So this entire wedding…”
“Was part of the test.””
My heart hammered against my ribs.
“The contracts?””
“Made in your name because your stepmother expected you to pay attention to them.””
“The money?””
“Advanced from the trust.””
“For Brielle?””
“Technically, for you.””
I felt dizzy.
The venue manager suddenly spoke.
“Mrs. Reed, there is something else.””
He opened the leather folder again.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Cream-colored.
My full name was written across the front.
*Claire Reed. Open only when you finally understand.*
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My stepmother's.
I reached for it.
My fingers shook so badly that I almost dropped it.
Brielle whispered, “Don't.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because once you open that, everything changes.””
“That's exactly what I need.””
I tore open the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
I unfolded it.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Only one sentence.
*Claire, if you are reading this at Brielle's wedding, then she has finally shown you who she is.*
I stopped breathing.
Brielle began to cry harder.
I continued reading.
*Do not punish her for being desperate. Punish the person who taught her that your love could be purchased.*
I looked up.
My eyes went straight to Marcus.
He went pale.
The paper continued.
*Your husband knows where the missing money went.*
The ballroom disappeared into silence.
Marcus whispered my name.
“Claire…”
I looked at him.
“Where did the money go?””
He didn't answer.
I held the letter tighter.
Then I read the final line.
*Ask Marcus about the woman named Vanessa.*
Marcus staggered backward.
Daniel frowned.
“Who is Vanessa?””
May you like
Brielle stopped crying.
And for the first time that entire night, Marcus looked genuinely terrified.
