Chapter 5: The Woman Named Vanessa

“Vanessa?””

Marcus said the name like it had been pulled from a wound.

I watched his face.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

That was enough.

“Who is she?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Claire, this isn’t the place.””

I gave a hollow laugh.

“You've said that twice tonight.””

“I know.””

“And somehow every time you say it, there is another secret waiting behind it.””

He closed his eyes.

Brielle stood completely still.

Daniel looked from Marcus to me.

“Dad,” he said, “who is Vanessa?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

Finally, Marcus whispered, “Someone I knew before I met Claire.””

The room seemed to tighten.

“Before you met me?”” I repeated.

“Yes.””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

“Then why did my stepmother know her name?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I don't know.””

“You're lying.””

His eyes snapped toward mine.

“I’m not.””

“You've lied to me all night. Don't insult me by pretending you suddenly remember nothing.””

Brielle stepped forward.

“Claire, Vanessa has nothing to do with you.””

I looked at her.

“How would you know?””

She hesitated.

“I just do.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You know because you're involved.””

She shook her head.

“I'm not.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

Brielle looked wounded.

“You don't believe me?””

“I don't know what I believe anymore.””

She turned away from him.

I folded the letter carefully.

“Marcus, where can I find Vanessa?””

He stared at me.

“You can't.””

“Why?””

“Because she left.””

“When?””

“A long time ago.””

“Where did she go?””

“I don't know.””

I watched his hands.

They were shaking.

Marcus had always been terrible at lying with his hands.

His voice could sound calm while his fingers betrayed him.

Tonight, they were betraying everything.

I walked toward him.

“You're afraid of her.””

“No.””

“You are.””

“She was a bad chapter in my life.””

I stopped.

“What did she do?””

He looked away.

“She wanted money.””

I stared at him.

“So do Brielle.””

Brielle flinched.

“That isn't fair.””

I turned toward her.

“Then tell me where the missing money went.””

She said nothing.

I looked back at Marcus.

“How much?””

He remained silent.

“How much money did Vanessa take?””

“Claire…”

“How much?””

He finally whispered, “Twenty-eight thousand.””

The venue manager looked startled.

Daniel frowned.

“Twenty-eight thousand from where?””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“An account.””

“What account?””

“Business reserves.””

I stared at him.

“Your company's?””

“Yes.””

“Why would your company reserves matter to my father's trust?””

“They were separate.””

“Then why does my stepmother mention Vanessa in a letter about my trust?””

Marcus said nothing.

I suddenly remembered something.

Three years ago, after my stepmother died, Marcus had encouraged me not to go through all her papers.

He said grief would make everything harder.

He had volunteered to handle the estate attorney.

He told me there was nothing important.

Just tax records.

Insurance documents.

Old correspondence.

I had trusted him.

Maybe that had been my first mistake.

I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone.

“I’m calling the attorney.””

Marcus immediately grabbed my wrist.

“Don't.””

I looked down at his hand.

He released me.

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand what you're opening.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don't know what Vanessa did.””

“Then tell me.””

“It started with a business loan.””

“What business loan?””

“My company was struggling.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“Before we met?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“And Vanessa?””

“She invested.””

“In your company?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“Forty thousand.””

“And you lost it?””

“Eventually.””

Something clicked.

“The missing money.””

Marcus went silent.

I looked at him.

“You replaced her forty thousand with money from our accounts.””

“No.””

“Then what did you do?””

He looked at Brielle.

Brielle lowered her eyes.

My heart sank.

“Oh my God.””

Daniel stared at Brielle.

“What?””

She whispered, “Dad paid her back.””

“With what?”” I asked.

Marcus said nothing.

I already knew.

“With money from the trust.””

His silence confirmed it.

Daniel took a step backward.

“You used Claire's inheritance?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I had permission.””

“From whom?”” I demanded.

“Your stepmother.””

I laughed.

“She was dead.””

“The arrangement was made before she died.””

“You're telling me my stepmother gave you permission to take money from a trust that belonged to me?””

“She said it was necessary.””

“Necessary for what?””

Marcus looked at me.

“To keep Vanessa from exposing the company.””

“What was she going to expose?””

He hesitated.

“Marcus.””

“She had records.””

“What records?””

“Payments.””

“To whom?””

He didn't answer.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“My dad.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“Your business partner,” Daniel said.

“Wasn't there an audit?””

Marcus froze.

Daniel's face hardened.

“You told me the company survived because your partner bought you time.””

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel looked at me.

“My father once mentioned Marcus had financial problems before the company recovered.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You told me the company became successful because of an aggressive expansion.””

“It did.””

“After Vanessa's money?””

“Yes.””

“And after the trust money?””

Marcus's silence returned.

I felt sick.

“How much of my family's money went into your business?””

“Claire, I paid it back.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“Some of it.””

“How much?””

He looked down.

“About eighty-six thousand.””

My breath caught.

The number seemed absurd.

Eighty-six thousand.

Not forty-five.

Not eighteen.

Eighty-six.

My father's money.

My money.

Money I had spent years believing had disappeared through ordinary estate costs.

I stared at my husband.

“You told me the trust was worth almost nothing.””

“It was complicated.””

“You told me there was barely enough left to invest.””

“It had restrictions.””

“You told me the estate was settled.””

“It was.””

“Then where did the rest go?””

He didn't answer.

Brielle suddenly said, “Mom…”

I turned toward her.

“Don't call me that.””

She recoiled.

“I’m sorry.””

“No. You don't get to use that word when you want something.””

Her eyes filled again.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about Vanessa?””

“No.””

“Your parents?””

“No.””

“Brielle?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Daniel?””

“I knew she existed.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

“Brielle told me.””

Brielle looked at him.

“Why would you tell him?””

“I thought it was relevant.””

“Relevant to what?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She contacted him.””

My pulse jumped.

“Vanessa contacted you?””

He nodded.

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

Brielle stared at him.

“You weren't supposed to tell her that.””

My body went cold.

“Why not?””

Daniel looked at Brielle.

She whispered, “Because I was handling it.””

I stepped closer.

“What were you handling?””

Brielle wiped her cheeks.

“She wanted money.””

“How much?””

“Twenty thousand.””

“And you gave it to her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“I promised she'd get it after the wedding.””

I stared at Brielle.

“With what money?””

She didn't answer.

The room seemed to spin.

“You were going to give Vanessa twenty thousand dollars after you married Daniel?””

“I didn't have it yet.””

“So you planned to use the trust.””

She shook her head.

“I planned to use your trust.””

The admission landed like a hammer.

Daniel stared at her.

“You told me the trust was your money.””

“It was supposed to be.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You told me Claire signed it over.””

Brielle’s face went pale.

“I thought she would.””

I turned toward her.

“You thought I would what?””

“Eventually.””

“You never asked.””

“Because I knew you'd say no!””

“Exactly.””

The manager quietly moved the wedding paperwork away from Brielle.

Maybe he finally understood that the real event happening tonight had nothing to do with cake or flowers.

It was an inheritance dispute unfolding in front of him.

I looked at Marcus.

“Why would Vanessa wait until now?””

He stared at me.

“She didn't.””

“What do you mean?””

“She came to our house.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

My stomach tightened.

“You saw her?””

“Yes.””

“You let her inside?””

“I had to.””

“Why?””

“Because she had something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he looked at Brielle.

Brielle shook her head.

“Dad, don't.””

Marcus ignored her.

“Vanessa had a copy of the original trust agreement.””

I stopped breathing.

“The original?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Marcus looked toward the ballroom doors.

“She has it.””

“Then why does my stepmother's letter mention her?””

“I think she wanted you to find her.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

“You're still lying.””

He looked at me.

“I swear I'm not.””

I opened my phone.

“Then we're finding her tonight.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Claire, wait.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

He stared at the floor.

“To tell you the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

He took a long breath.

“Vanessa wasn't just my former investor.””

I waited.

“She was the woman I was engaged to before you.””

Everything went silent.

I looked at him.

Then at Brielle.

Then at Daniel.

And suddenly Brielle's fear made sense.

I whispered, “You were engaged to her?””

Marcus nodded.

“For two years.””

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“And my stepmother knew.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the final line again.

*Ask Marcus about the woman named Vanessa.*

There was something else beneath the handwriting.

A faint indentation on the paper.

As though another sentence had once been written there and torn away.

I held the page beneath the ballroom lights.

Then I saw two words impressed into the paper.

*She knows.*

I looked at Marcus.

“Knows what?””

He didn't answer.

His phone began ringing.

He glanced at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

I reached for it.

He pulled it away.

“Who is it?””

He didn't respond.

“Marcus, who is calling you?””

The phone rang again.

This time, a message appeared across the screen.

Marcus accidentally turned the phone toward me.

I read it.

*You promised Claire would never find out what happened to her father.*

My heart stopped.

I looked up at my husband.

“What happened to my father?””

Marcus went completely silent.

May you like

And behind him, Brielle whispered,

“Vanessa knows everything.””
