Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew My Husband

The name stayed between us.

Clara.

One word.

But it carried the weight of a secret nobody wanted to touch.

Mateo looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you react like that?””

She wiped her eyes quickly.

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

“I just recognized the name.””

“From where?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at the floor.

“I met her.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

Mateo’s voice became sharper.

“When did you meet Clara?””

“Before our wedding.””

I felt a chill.

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She contacted me.””

“Why would she contact you?””

“Because she wanted someone to know the truth.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What truth?””

Vanessa was quiet.

Then she said:

“Your father had a daughter.””

The world seemed to stop.

Mateo stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“My father didn’t have another child.””

I whispered:

“Are you sure?””

He looked at me.

The pain in his eyes was unbearable.

“Mom, you’re asking me?””

I closed my eyes.

He was right.

I had spent years protecting him from pain.

But pain always finds a way back.

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“Clara was Daniel’s daughter from before he met you.””

Mateo looked confused.

“Before Mom?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is this a secret?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was complicated.

I opened my purse again.

“I knew about Clara.””

Mateo looked at me.

“When?””

“After your father died.””

His face changed.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

I looked down.

“I received a letter.””

“From who?””

“Clara.””

Silence.

“She said she didn’t want money. She said she didn’t want anything from us. She only wanted to meet her father before it was too late.””

Mateo whispered:

“And you stopped her?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I tried to find her.””

Vanessa suddenly looked up.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she come?””

I stared at her.

“Because someone convinced her not to.””

Mateo turned.

“Who?””

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

Because Vanessa already knew.

Her face revealed it.

Mateo noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“What?””

“Tell me.””

She sighed.

“I spoke to Clara.””

The betrayal in Mateo’s face was immediate.

“When?””

“Before we married.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“Because I was trying to understand your family.””

“No.””

Mateo shook his head.

“You were investigating my family.””

She didn’t deny it.

“She reached out to me because she thought I would be close to you.””

“Did you tell me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because she had information.””

“What information?”” I asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

“About your father’s money.””

My heart dropped.

“What about it?””

“She said Daniel didn’t give the money away.””

Mateo frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She said someone took it.””

The words hung in the air.

I felt my heartbeat change.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You know something.””

“I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

I stood.

“Enough.””

But Mateo stopped me.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Mom.””

I looked at him.

“I need to know.””

That sentence broke me.

Because it was the same sentence I had been avoiding for eight years.

I sat down.

“After your father died, I found missing documents.””

“What documents?””

“Bank records.””

Mateo leaned forward.

“And?””

I swallowed.

“Someone had access to his accounts.””

“Who?””

I looked at the envelope.

“I never found out.””

Vanessa whispered:

“But Clara did.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“She told me she found proof.””

“Proof of what?”” Mateo asked.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“That Daniel wasn’t the one who destroyed your family.””

I stared at her.

“Then who was?””

Vanessa reached for her phone.

“I have the messages.””

Mateo looked at the screen.

She opened a conversation.

A name appeared.

Clara.

The latest message was from two weeks earlier.

One sentence.

“I know what Elena did after Daniel died.””

My blood ran cold.

Mateo looked at me.

Not with doubt this time.

With fear.

Because everyone had secrets.

May you like

Including me.

And Clara was about to reveal mine.
