Chapter 4: The Secret Vanessa Tried to Hide
The call ended.
Vanessa stood frozen.
Mateo stepped closer.
“Who was that?””
She put her phone away.
“Nobody.””
I almost smiled.
People always say “nobody” when the truth is standing right behind them.
“Vanessa,” Mateo said firmly.
She looked at him.
“I said nobody.””
That was the first time I saw fear in her eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
The clerk cleared his throat.
“Do you still need assistance with the original reservation?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, I spoke.
“Cancel everything connected to my card.””
The clerk nodded.
Vanessa stared.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
“But we’re here.””
I looked at her.
“You said you paid for it.””
Her lips parted.
She had no response.
We left the desk.
Outside the terminal, Mateo followed me.
“Mom, wait.””
I kept walking.
“Please.””
I stopped.
“What?””
He looked exhausted.
“I made a mistake.””
“Yes.””
“I should have defended you.””
“Yes.””
“I was trying to keep peace.””
I turned around.
“Mateo, peace that requires one person to be humiliated is not peace.””
He looked down.
That sentence hurt him because it was true.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then:
“No, that can’t be right.””
He looked at me.
“Can you send me the documents?””
Another pause.
“Thank you.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
“Mom…”
“What?””
He showed me his phone.
An email from the resort.
Attached documents.
A reservation request.
A conversation history.
And one name.
Vanessa.
My stomach dropped.
“She booked the second room?””
Mateo nodded slowly.
“But why?””
We opened the message.
The request was simple.
“Please arrange separate accommodations. My mother-in-law will be joining unexpectedly. I want to ensure privacy.””
I read it again.
Unexpectedly.
As if I had forced myself into their vacation.
As if I was the problem.
Then another message appeared.
A message from the resort manager.
“Ms. Vanessa Morales requested that all charges remain under the original payment guarantee.””
My blood went cold.
She planned to keep my card attached.
She wanted the luxury.
She wanted the appearance.
She wanted everyone to believe she earned it.
But she wanted me paying silently.
Mateo covered his face.
“I didn’t know.””
I believed him.
But that didn’t make the pain disappear.
“You didn’t know because you never asked.””
He had no answer.
Later that evening, we sat outside the airport café.
Vanessa was across from us.
For once, she had nothing to say.
Mateo placed the documents on the table.
“Explain.””
She looked at him.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She sighed.
“I just wanted privacy.””
“So you booked another room behind our backs?””
“I was trying to avoid conflict.””
I laughed softly.
“Conflict?””
She looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.””
Then her phone buzzed again.
She looked at the screen.
And this time, she didn’t hide it.
Mateo saw the name.
His face changed.
“Why is my father calling you?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Because Mateo’s father had been dead for eight years.
And Vanessa’s phone showed a saved contact.
A contact she should never have had.
My hands went cold.
“Who is that?”” I whispered.
Vanessa immediately locked her phone.
But it was too late.
May you like
Mateo had seen.
And he was staring at his wife like he had never seen her before.
